Crystal Liu is the Female Lead for Tong Que Tai in a Role Formerly Rumored to Star Yoon Eun Hye

The production of the upcoming C-movie Tong Que Tai (銅雀台) held it’s opening day media event to herald the start of filming. None of the male cast were on hand, but Director Zhao Lin Shan was able to finally confirm and introduce his leading lady to the media. For whatever reason, Yoon Eun Hye will not be participating in this movie contrary to early rumored news reports. While it’s true she was offered the role, but in the end it didn’t pan out.

The leading lady will instead be Crystal Liu (Liu Yi Fei), who is no stranger to playing historical femme fatales and/or the most beautiful woman in the world type characters (Xiaolongnu in Return of the Condor Heroes, Wang Yu Yen in Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, the ghost Nie Xiaoqian in the 2011 remake of A Chinese Ghost Story, etc.). Crystal isn’t the best actress in the book, but I haven’t watched her recent movies to see if she’s improved any. Acting opposite Chow Yun-fat, she’s going to have to bring it.

The male leads will be Chow Yun-fat (with whom Crystal’s character will have a May-December romance), Alec Su, and Japanese actor Tamaki Hiroshi. The story centers around famed historical figure Cao Cao and depicts him in his later years not as a power-driven master tactician, but instead a man striving for peace. I’m torn about swapping out Eun Hye for Crystal. I would have loved to see Eun Hye do a big budget C-movie with an A-list cast, but I wasn’t completely sold on the story or her character. For now, this movie remains interesting to me, but I’m not a big Crystal fan so I’ll probably check it out when it’s available.

Crystal Liu is the Female Lead for Tong Que Tai in a Role Formerly Rumored to Star Yoon Eun Hye — 24 Comments

  1. On the contrary, I really like Crystal Liu. I was wondering when she was returning to the small screen since it’s been a few years. I agree her acting isn’t as great. All of her roles have been the quiet, devoted type.

It sucks Yoon Eun Hye might not be in the drama. I’m a big fan of historical C-dramas since their visuals and plotlines [cough]BuBuJingXin[cough] are so intriguing.

I was really looking forward to seeing the top stars of leading Asian countries collaborate in one project. I guess I’ll have to wait and see how things turn out.

    • Tong Que Tai is not a drama, it is a movie.

Crystal hasn’t done a drama since 2006, and I doubt she’ll go back to the small screen anytime soon.

      • Woops. Big mistake there. Thanks for the correction. I’m disappointed in hearing that she might not act in dramas, but it’s her decision.

  2. YAY!!! I love Liu Yi Fei!!! Hahaha..I guess it’s good news for me because I would actually prefer a c-actress acting out the role, because i just hate dubbing. HAHA.

    • Same here I’m a big Yifei fan. always have and always will. and her acting has increase
in A chinese ghost story. I really love the last part. I’m watching out for her new movie The Four. 🙂

  3. The movie was initially offered to Yoon Eun Hye but she rejected it and I am glad she did because it was way too much risk for her to take this on. I read in soompi that its the first movie project of this director and that he is a CF director.

I think Yoon Eun Hye has been thinking about rejecting this offer for awhile now judging from her retweets.

YEH’s tweet (RT ChungMinCho) on Sept 27th:

When I throw the kind of opportunity seems unfair to complain that people experience a more severe setback, and is glad to accommodate more people and reach them as an opportunity to have better preparation. Another opportunity is the chance of losing.

  4. Am glad YEH is not doing this movie, she made the right decision. She is a smart girl, she knows what’s the right role for her.

  5. I don’t think YEH is suited for this character anyway. Crystal Liu looks the part at least.

I saw Cystal last in A Chinese Ghost Story…she was ..just ok. Nothing spectacular.

  6. I’m actually glad YEH’s not doing this. An international collaboration would have been cool, but I wasn’t particularly keen on the story either (and I hate dubbing). Crystal’s not really a match for her co-stars as far as acting chops go, but she is absolutely gorgeous, and her acting has improved. Plus, she looks amazing in ancient garb.

  7. Liu Yi Fei’s gorgeous, no doubt, but her acting’s still mediocre. She has improved, but not enough. I just get kinda upset that she lands all these fantastic roles because of her connections, when other actresses who might deserve the roles can’t get them because of limited financial backing or whatnot.
Well. She’s beautiful, and maybe directors just need that stunning face and figure

      • i actually feel liu shi shi and tang yan are both prettier than her
they can also act better than her too
all three were in chinese paladin series

  8. Alec Su must have been disappointed that YEH rejected this, cause just 2 weeks ago, he was so excited telling the reporters that he will be working with Yoon Eun Hye and that he has been studying korean for her. He even demonstrated the korean words that he learned, he was so cute while saying ‘oppa.’

  9. One of the most gorgeous female actresses I have ever seen (every time an ancient Chinese folktale or legend mentions a beautiful woman, her face comes to mind. ), but her acting always leaves me bored.

  10. I would love to see YEH works with Chow Yuen Fat….but for a historic theme movie like this, it seems Liu has the “appearance” than YEH….anyways, am glad YEH does not have to spend 3 months away from someone

  11. aw. this news is kinda sad. well you may be right that this is not the best role or something but it’s still a good opportunity for her to try something new. anyway, it’s good news too in a way that she might me eyeing some roles in the small screen and i wish to see her back in a drama (hoepfully with Kang Ji Hwan or joo Ji Hoon as soon as he is released from MS).

wishful thinking only in my part.~♥

  12. Less intriguing/exciting casting… Since YEH didn’t go for it I wish they instead picked a really awesome actress who could hold her own against the gauntlet of male stars in this cast. I guess we’ll see how Crystal does soon enough.

  13. oww YEH why don’t you take this role 🙁 it will be a new experince for you.. and just ignore the people who judge you, do not give up, prove that you can do it! without the people who like to judge, a person will not be developed , they train your patience..you make your decision i appreciated that 🙂 , and it’s okay because don’t have to wait 1 years for see you in 2 hours , I hope you will play in series drama with handsome and popular guy hehe 🙂

  14. awwww;;;
I was hoping to see three main actors from china, japan and korea showing up in this moviee T_T..nooo yoon eun haeee~~~~
why didnt they just pick other korean female actors??
T.T yyy~~too depresseddd,, the new cast is pretty though..;;( I think I saw her in the forbidden(?)kingdom??)
anyways,, im looking foward to seeing hiroshi tamaki san!! >_< n alec su!

  15. I’m so happy Yifei is the lead. She’s my favorite chinese actress I fell in love with her when she played Xiaolongnu. I’m also a fan of YEH, it’s just a big puzzle to me why she turned it down, I’m not much into the news 🙂
