Fabulous Boys Premieres this Sunday and Releases 15-minute Preview

I have no idea why I’m even following along with Fabulous Boys, the Taiwanese remake of the Hong Sisters cracktastic K-drama You’re Beautiful. The original wasn’t a drama I loved wholeheartedly though I was crazy addicted when it initially aired, along with a good chunk of the online drama viewing world. The Japanese remake Ikemen desu ne was actually not bad but I lost interest when re-watching the same shallow story. This remake premieres this Sunday on GTV and might have a chance of garnering some decent ratings. It’s up against nightly leader King Flower on SETTV (which if anyone reads this blog ought to know is a love/hate drama that might actually go over the cliff with a crazy ending), Borrow Ur Love on CTV, and K Song Love on CTS. Maybe I’m looking for a substitute for Sunday nights to watch because of King Flower is driving me crazy. The cast held a press conference this week dressed all in white and looking very snazzy indeed, with Jiro Wang playing Hwang Tae Kyung, Lele Cheng as Go Minam/Minyeo, Hwang In Deok as Shin Woo oppa, and Evan Yo as Jeremy. This cast might not be the best looking (and I didn’t think the original cast was all that looks-wise either but they had great chemistry) but they look like they got along and had fun filming. A 15-minute preview was released at the press conference that shows a lot of scenes from the early half of the drama. While the scenes are mainly the same from the original, for some reason it feels really different to me. Whether its acting or directing, FB is imbued with a Taiwanese sensibility and vibe that harkens back to the style of Taiwanese drama adaptations of popular mangas such as The Rose, Hana Kimi, and It Start with a Kiss. I always thought YB had a shoujo manga sensibility and Taiwan has always been the best at doing adaptations of shoujo mangas so maybe this one will be better than expected. I’ll probably watch it…..if I’m not sobbing like a loony after today’s episode 18 of KF.

The three casts of You’re Beautiful. The TW-version called Fabulous Boys, the Korean You’re Beautiful, and the Japanese dorama Ikemen desu ne. While I haven’t watched the TW-version yet (obviously), but my choice for the perfect cast selected from all three would be Jang Geun Seok as Hwang Tae Kyung, Takimoto Miori as Go Minam/Minyeo, Lee Hong Ki as Jeremy, and Fujigaya Taisuke as Shin Woo.

Fabulous Boys Premieres this Sunday and Releases 15-minute Preview — 19 Comments

  1. Wow! The girl is too small to even go as girlish boy. She is a stint and not least a bit boyish. Hopefully she can act to make this one believable a bit o_O.

  2. Taiwanese actors acting chop always drive me nuts. Especially the drama actors. I was so done watching Taiwanese dramas that I much much prefer the Hong Kong, Korean and Japanese dramas simply because their acting didn’t irritare the hell out of me.

  3. Aigo. What happened to Jiro Wang’s face? Way too much work done 🙁 I will however give it a try after the 15 min. preview. After King Flower that is. Koala, according to dramafever KF is a 20-episode show. We discussed that we didn’t know how many episodes there would be but they never go on for more than 23 episodes. I think dramafever is somewhat reliable on the episode count, so that would mean 3 episodes left. If they put Da Hua and Guan Jun together in 3 episode it will really be a WTF I give up moment.

  4. nope. carbon copy. only worse. jiro stiiill sucks at acting. and his new face is not doing him anything. oh, taiwanese dramas.. please make one i actually enjoy soon.

  5. This looks like the carbon copy of You’re Beautiful! I was hoping they would change it up just a little! 🙁

  6. Korea version : JKS was great in the korea version. Although JYW can’t act, he is pleasant looking and is believable as the nice guy. The korea version is the funniest, most good looking cast, got great chemistry but some of plot are a bit redundant and ridiculous and can be cut

Japan version : weak acting by male lead but luckily it has less redundant scenes hence faster pace. I like their ending. The concert was grand and their last scene is very sweet.

Tw version : weak acting, old. I think some of the “idols” from tw really need to take acting lessons. I don’t think i will watch the drama after seeing the preview.

  7. I’ve watched You’re Beautiful and Ikemen Desu Ne so I guess I’ll watch this one too! 🙂 I’m crossing my fingers in hopes that it won’t just be Park Shin Hye making a cameo. Really, it’s just useless hope but I’ll hope never the less.

  8. I know this is old news by now but I just recently watched Fabulous Boys and it was hilarious with the slapstick humor the Jiro and the main actress do so well. So I just want to plug the drama since so many other commenters didn’t seem to want to give it a try. 🙂
