Since I have to fill this space with words, rather than just put up these super awesome new stills of So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin in The Master’s Sun, I want to talk a bit about the directing to come in this drama since we’ve all gabbed ad nauseum about the writing duo of the Hong sisters. TMS will be helmed by PD Jin Hyuk, who did City Hunter, Prosecutor Princess, Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance, and On Air. He was also the assistant PD in the lovely Chinese-Korean collaboration wuxia drama Bichunmoo. He’s a solid helmsman behind the camera, with a sure hand and a penchant for steadiness over ill-advised experimentation, and I’ve never had a problem with the directing in those dramas mentioned above. From the two previews released so far, he ably captured the mood of this horror romance deftly. I felt tingles up my spine even as certain scenes made me giggle at the cuteness. What I appreciate about the Hong Sisters is how they pretty much collaborate with a different PD each time, and their dramas are scattered evenly across all three major networks.
The PD in Big did The Kingdom of the Wind, Best Love was directed by the dude who did Queen Seondeok and New Heart, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho is thanks to the PD who just helmed Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love and also did A Star’s Lover, and the PD who did You’re Beautiful recently did King of Dramas. I can keep going with their even earlier works but the point is that these two ladies don’t have a preferred PD which keeps to their style of picking really different subject matters for their dramas. Their trademark is really the energy and punny dialogue, which works at times and overwhelms in others. Every at-bat can’t be a home run or even a base hit, right? If we’re going by the ebb and flow of drama karma, they are probably due for another solid outing and judging from how suitable the two leads look together in TMS, this one already has a leg up. These new stills show Tae Gong Shil and Joo Joong Won on a rooftop somewhere. I love the first still above which shows her pouting and wanting to touch him. And the rest where he hugs her because she’s literally falling over is nicely done with So Ji Sub’s restrained expression of discomfort and concern. I think I’m gonna like this OTP very very much.
