Jung Il Woo and UEE to Headline Upcoming Weekend Drama Golden Rainbow

After a long hiatus from drama land after two back-to-back dramas in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop right into The Moon Embraces the Sun, Jung Il Woo is finally coming back to the small screen and is making up for his time away by doing a long 50-episode weekend drama. While the official confirmation hasn’t come down yet, insiders at MBC say that Jung Il Woo has in fact accepted the leading man role in the upcoming Golden Rainbow opposite leading actress UEE. She also hasn’t officially confirmed yet but is pretty much onboard as well. I’m not surprised to see Jung Il Woo come back with MBC drama, he’s worked with MBC more than any other network. Jung Il Woo got his start with High Kick Through the Roof, then Return of Iljimae, and most recently MoonSun (he did one drama apiece for the other networks). UEE got her biggest hit to date with a weekend drama Ojakkyo Brothers on KBS, so she might be looking to see if she can recreate that success and chemistry with Jung Il Woo as her co-star playing a prosecutor in anĀ earnest orphan drama set in the world of marine fishing. Golden Rainbow is about 7 orphans who form a family with an adoptive father played by Kim Sang Joong. Child actress wunderkind Kim Yoo Jung will carry the heavy load playing the younger UEE for the first ten episodes. This would reunite Kim Yoo Jung with the screenwriter from May Queen who is writing Golden Rainbow.

Before I Summon You, Gold came along, May Queen was hands down one of the craziest makjang weekend dramas in years. But I’m not completely ready to relegate Golden Rainbow to the trash bin by the writer alone, because before May Queen he wrote the magnificent The President and that was easily one of the best dramas of 2010. Helming Golden Rainbow will be the PD who did I Do, I Do, who also worked as the assistant PD for some beautifully filmed MBC dramas such as My Princess, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Hon, and Damo. Golden Rainbow might end up worth watching for the cinematography alone. The younger generation cast has already started filming and MBC released the script reading pictures which I have posted below. Seeing Kim Yoo Jung leading the script reading just flashes me right back to the production of May Queen which also had a long childhood section. While UEE has never impressed me with her acting, and I have to confess that I didn’t watch Ojakkyo Brothers because of my Joo Won allergy and I heard she wasn’t bad there, I do like Jung Il Woo and lately I’ve been on a weekend drama binge so if this drama looks promising I’ll check it out. It premieres in early November after Scandal: The Very Shocking and Immoral Incident. Now that is one well-acted effectively makjang drama where I like all the characters, even the baddies, for being so very understandable in all their angst.

Jung Il Woo and UEE to Headline Upcoming Weekend Drama Golden Rainbow — 49 Comments

  1. Uee did a good job in ojakgyo but i cant imagine her with jung il woo at the moment. I hope the streaming sites will have this coz i do want to check it out. I miss jung il woo. Hope it will be a good drama for his sake! He has been away too long.

    • The last time jung il woo filmed a drama was during the end of 2011, and then Moon Embracing the Sun came out in January 2012. It’s been almost 2 years already! Also, he still has to fulfill his mandatory military service for 2 years. That would be a total of 4 years for his career hiatus.

      • I don’t think Koala has cute allergy. In fact, from her favorites, many of them are cute and from her comments, she adores them so.

      • I love Teh Cute! But it’s for the cute, not for the acting. LOL, that would be insane to think Suzy can act. But she’s cute and I like her brand of cute. I just wish her brand of cute would stay away from dramas.

    • Hi bains, Captain K is not the only one. I’m not good in explaining but honestly it can’t be help. I barely tolerated him in Ojakyo, my favourite pairing was actually Uee’s character & the mother.

    • I don’t find him a good actor. At. All. I have an equal number of dramas friends who feel the same way about his one-note acting but another equal number who love him and think he’s the bees knees.

  2. Oh, the little kid down on the right is young Joo-won in Good Doctor. *know-it-all mode off*

You should definitely check out Ojakgyo Brothers. Ryu Soo Young’s love story is soooo good, the whole family is loveable. There is almost nothing to criticize about this show.

Jung Il Woo wanted to finish his studies, hope he achieved it and we will see more of him now. Love him!

  3. The premise sounds boring and it’s a weekend drama….I’ll skip this…

Just asking out of curiosity: why the Joo Won allergy?? (I have not seen any of his dramas by the way)

  4. In the beginning I didn’t like Joo-won either; now that I see his serious and engrossing attitude towards acting, I do like him a lot.

  5. I’m very happy for UEE. I think she can act (compared to other idols) and she made a good job in OB. But the golf drama was a big flop for me. I watch her every sunday in Barefoot Friends, and I like her attitude. And what can I say about Jung Il Woo? he’s so sexy and charming! So count me in ^^

  6. So I should start Scandal, right?
I am off GOM for now. Too too too much of me wanting to kill characters and I realize it isn’t worth my time.

How do I feel about JIW? I am convinced there are some people of the opposite sex for no specific reason that we are drawn to and it is our genetic imperative to follow through on this attraction and, yes, I will say it, reproduce with them. That is how I feel with JIW. He makes my DNA insane with desire for his DNA. Even if I listed all the traits of his that I admire, it wouldn’t add up to this overpowering urge to be with him.

I think your allergy to Joo Won is the other side of this phenomenon, and I understand it because I didn’t love him in everything, either. I couldn’t watch Gatiskal, the spy one, and the stills for GD frighten me, no matter how much I love MCW and JSW.

As far as this pairing of UEE and JIW…I’m cogitating on that…I think it would work because she can be adorable. My favorite scenes of hers in OB were with omani Kim Ja Ok. UEE’s character worked so hard to please KJO’s; the ups and downs and more downs made the pay-off satisfying.
Here is my video of them.

      • biology, physiology heck add in chemistry terms, you are definitely smart Jomo. It must be nice for some to be very well versed with biological science terms to be a stickler and be dogmatic about it. Is that being redundant???? However, I wonder what it says about their humor? I read a comment from a medical doctor that says they are boring (her comment not mine). Again I wonder if there is truth to that? Maybe I should get out of the biology field. Aaah! Just keep it up Jomo, I like reading your comments…

    • Hey jomo! I’m personally indifferent to JIW but I loved Uee in OB and I hope this’ll be equally great. (though like many, I was more touched by her connection with the mother than with ‘ajusshi’, whom I adored anyway).

  7. Oh, Kim Yoo Jung and that little kid from Good Doctor, I can’t wait. I guess they’re gonna tug at our heartstrings once again. Going back to UEE and JIW, I really don’t find UEE impressive, but I think she’s done ok with most of her projects, so no complaints. I just hope her chemistry with JIW with be good.

  8. Now this is a couple i can definitely see together.

Uee is adorable even though i find her acting green.

I find jung il woo to give me lee jong suk vibes and vice versa. I don’t know if it’s just me. I love both guys though.

  9. Oh my GOD, those 2 boys child actors are absolutely the best!!!

They both made me bowl my eyes out with their gripping performances in Good Doctor.

The absolutely adorable younger one in the last picture on the right plays the young Joo Won, and the equally cute one plays a young famous singer with some health issues in his throat.

Where do these child actors go to learn acting because they are just plain amazing!

I’m definetely looking forward to this drama even it was only for the child actors, but fortunately I love Joon II Woo, and I’m glad he is back in dramaland.

    I miss him since FBRS!

  10. Koala, I think you should maybe give OB a try someday – Joo Won and Uee are the OTP all right, but even with your allergy, he doesn’t take up all the time in that drama (easy, with a 50+-episoder) and the character I felt her have the most connection with was his mother – the mom and Uee were really touching to watch. And it also has Ryu Soo Young (now of Two Weeks) at his hottest and best and actually getting a proper love line – if you like him in Two Weeks, you’ll love him here.

  11. actually family drama is not my thing…
Sometimes always add too much character in one drama.. some are interesting but some are unnecesary and the other are plain annoying… But Sometimes I always love a love story in family drama, because they tend to develop them with more natural development and more relatable for me
So for jung Il WOo’s sake… I might check this one
If I can get past Can You Hear My Heart for bromance and love story dynamic and Smile You for Jung Kyung Ho’s char and their loveline…Maybe I can get past to this one too..

  12. Thanks for the heads up Koala. Will definitely check out this drama even for the child actors alone. Im not so much into JIW and UEE but I will watch a few episodes to see if the plot is good.

  13. While I dont like UEE I will tune in just for Kim Yoo Jung and little ‘Shi On’ from Good Doctor. That child makes you cry at every second he shows up in Good Doctor playing the younger version of JooWon who is authistic. You really have to see it!

As for Joo Won, there are no words to describe him. He is just the BEST out of the BEST there and I am envious of his costars/GF/future wife šŸ˜›

  14. I didn’t have an opinion on joowon before but he is awful in the medical drama that’s currently airing. I’m not fond of mental handicap portrayals in general but his is probably one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen. Like the saying goes “you never go full retard”. he definitely goes full retard.

    • He’s terrible in GD as well? I’ve stopped even checking him out since Gaksital confirmed that I can’t stand his “acting” or whatever he calls it.

What’s so strange is the weird phenomenon that fans of Joo Won profess to not understand why people don’t like or love him like they do? What’s not to understand? A likes him, B thinks he sucks. Same is true of any actor or actress out there. What’s strange is his fans in particular seem to hold a I-can’t-believe-it’s-not-Butter belief that it’s just Not Possible people don’t like him. I find that amusing.

And thanks for tossing in a Tropic Thunder quote, because that shiz is as true as it gets. “You never go full retard”. Dustin Hoffman came close in Rain Man and that’s the edge of the line.

      • Agree. Actually my hate/dislike for a particular actor just increases whenever i face that type of fans.
In that context, i have to say i really like fans of Lee Min-ho, SSH, Park Shin-hye.

      • I think most fans will probably defend their idols when they are being criticized, it’s not only JW. I don’t have JW allergy but It took my some time to get used to his looks, he always looked like a plump version of Kang Dong Won to me and he does overreacts but at times, he nails his performance. He’s still a rookie and have space for improvement, maybe you’ll suprisingly like him in the future… maybe….

  15. you should try to watch Ojakkyo Brothers only for Uee’s performance only, Ms Koala – she was absolutely charming in that drama.

  16. I am kinda like UEE now since watching Barefoot Friends, I like her attitude compare to most of female idol… she is like a good combination between sexy and next door girl…

I am excited to see UEE and JIW, but I still have my trauma because of may queen, I watched it until last ep just bacause of jae hee, one of worst written korean drama I’ve ever watch and will wait your review later if it’s different than may queen.

  17. As for joo won I like him for view first ep of bridal mask, but then Park ki Woong (kimura shunji) stole my heart since that but still for me, he is one of good young actor in korea.
