Tong Hua Produces Angsty Period C-drama The Cage of Love with Hawick Lau and Zheng Shuang

I think C-writer Tong Hua has found a second calling as a drama script producer. She doesn’t write the script itself but her name and oversight position appears to lend some weight to any C-drama the way it did with the just aired Perfect Couple with Tang Yan and Wallace Huo. The production company behind Perfect Couple has hired Tong Hua as the drama supervisor for the upcoming way torturous and angsty The Cage of Love (C-title 抓住彩虹的男人 The Man Who Grabbed the Rainbow). This particular production company is known for doing passionate and painful love stories having produced the C-dramas Sealed with a Kiss, Ru Yi, and Best Time. Starring in the currently filming The Cage of Love is Hawick Lau (a regular with this production company having been the male lead in both Sealed with a Kiss and Ru Yi) pairing for the first time with Zheng Shuang. This drama is the reason she can’t do Let’s Go Watch Meteor Shower 3 with her boyfriend Hans Zhang and that drama has replaced her with Gui Gui.

The Cage of Love is set in the turn of the 20th century in an era known as the late Qing/early Republic time during Chinese history, a time of great transformation as China shed thousands of years of imperial rule and stumbled its way to modernity. Hawick thinks Zheng Shuang’s character Cai Hong (Rainbow) is the daughter of the man he blames for ruining his dad so he takes revenge upon her and her family but they unexpectedly fall in love. Sounds a lot like Sealed with a Kiss, hopefully with less blackmail and raping. I’m also interested in this drama because of hottie second male lead Li Dong Xue, who is most famous for playing 17th Prince (the official title of Guo Jun Wang 果郡王) in Legend of Zhen Huan. The drama released its first batch of official drama stills and looks quite authentic in capturing the costumes and mood of that era.

  1. Woah … She’s had a lot of work done, hasn’t she? I don’t recognize her at all. I understand and empathize with the pressure that entertainers are under to look good, but this might be taking the phrase “a chameleon-like actor” a little too far …

    • My thoughts exactly. I thought I was looking at the second female lead and not the same girl I saw in Let’s Go Watch the Meteor Shower. I don’t get it. She was already so pretty.

  2. koala wrote an article when she confirmed her relationship with hans zhang and she said that she wanted a change so she got work done. Seems like she wanted a new face. Don’t know why, the old one was equally pretty in my opinion.

  3. As you mentioned Legend of Zhen Huan, have you seen it Ms. K? After BBJX, I had this empty hole in me that needed to be filled and thank god for Zhen Huan. I was first afraid it was gonna be something like Schemes of a Beauty, but to my surprise it was a really good series. It’s super long at 75 episode which I was scared of at first, but the plot does move along and each character’s transformation/development seems very believable. For the first time, I realized that these scheming palace series should take places in years, but most series make it seem like it happened within a year.

Pretty much ALL the actress in Zhen Huan was amazing! I fell in love with Sun Li and cannot get enough of her. At first, I didn’t find her very beautiful (I guess beautiful in the traditional sense like Liu Yifei), but after Zhen Huan, she’s pretty much one of the most beautiful Chinese actress I have seen.

The costume/hairpiece for this drama is to die for! I can’t keep staring at their hair and clothes and go green with envy. It’s gorgeous, a true feast for the eyes. The stills and promo pictures make this series look like a low-budget drama, but how wrong that impression is. I hope people really give this series a try, it’s definitely a good series. Sun Li for a International Emmy nomination for her role. She makes me cry when she cried.

  4. Wow I saw Zheng Shuang in “Love Through A Millennium” and had no idea that she was same lead as “Let’s Go Watch Meteor SHower”. I thought she was a completely new actress. she looks so much sweeter back then
