Yoo Ah In in Talks to for Male Lead of SBS 50-episode Sageuk Six Dragons Flying

It’s safe to say this drama might become Yoo Ah In‘s drama swan song before he leaves for military service, if he does end up doing it, of course. SBS is planning its own long 50-episode sageuk and not content to let MBC do Splendid Politics (Hwajung) alone this year. The drama is titled Six Dragons Flying (or Six Flying Dragons, depends on how you read the phrase). The drama has a powerhouse production team behind it – written by the screenwriters of Queen Seondeok and Tree with Deep Roots with the PD of Tree rounding out the talent behind the camera.

The drama is slated for SBS Mon-Tues in September, to follow Chaebol’s Daughter which is slated to follow the currently airing Heard it Through the Grapevine. That’ll set Six Dragons on a collision course with Splendid Politics, but only just a small number of episodes will compete head to head as SP is scheduled to end in October. The production plans to finish casting by May and head into filming in early summer and the first name in casting has been revealed to be Yoo Ah In, the talented young actor is in talks to play the male lead of this epic saga.

If Splendid Politics chose the famous Joseon era around Gwanghaegun, Six Flying Dragons goes back way earlier into Joseon history to cover the life of the third Joseon King Taejong (Yi Bang Won). Since King Taejong had brothers, all sons of King Taejo, methinks the six flying dragons of the title is easy to guess. Yoo Ah In is no stranger to sageuks, having done three sageuk dramas already and leaving a memorable impression with each. I’m happy he continues to choose his works wisely and challenge himself, whether dramas or movies, and I feel the unholy stench of Fashion King has finally been washed away.

Yoo Ah In in Talks to for Male Lead of SBS 50-episode Sageuk Six Dragons Flying — 20 Comments

  1. For an 86er, he’s really stretching it if he’ll be participating in a 50-episode drama to air in the fall. The drama does sound great though, so I hope they cast a senior to play Yi Bang Won and have him be one of the sons instead.

  2. I think the six flying dragons includes Taejong…daddy dragon surely must be king Taejo (Yi Seong-gye) so all the fraternal murdering left right and centre?

  3. If he says yes, I’m in. But, I wonder how he has that much time before military service. I heard this drama is followed by Chaeol’s daughter that will follow HTTG. HTTG has still some episodes. And CD doesn’t still have casts. I think he doesn’t have that much time.

  4. Splendid Politics is so boring after first 2 episodes. I hope this one will be better because of the team behind it. Loved QSD and TWDR.

    • Same, all the politics, tho some might love it but I don’t. It reminds me of Secret Door which has excessive amount to it.

But, I am giving Hwajung a chance, see how the drama goes when the young characters grow up and Kim Jae Won!

Anyway, I love sageuks and Yoo Ah In in it is a added bonus.Oh, how I miss Sungkyunkwan Scandal! Wish they have more of its theme.

    • Horses for courses! After six episodes, I LOVE “Splendid Politics” but then sageuks are my favourite! 44 episodes to go then another massive sageuk….awesome!

  5. I always said it would take a lot for me to start another 50 episode drama after finishing Empress Ki but I might consider watching another drama like that for Yoo Ah In. If he can’t do it then I hope they will cast someone good. This sounds interesting.

I always think that he has already gone to the army but then some news of him pop up and I am reminded that he still hasn’t gone yet.

  6. I also tried Splendid Politics, in which the Cha is quite splendid, but really couldn’t care less about the politics.

Could I watch my beloved YAI for 5o eps? I don’t think so, but I will definitely try!

You know how some shows hit the sweet spot as far your interests? These saguek shows hit a spot not anywhere near me. I wish I liked them.

    • The same here and I think its a wide spread dislike of taste but however in few cases some saguek’s do good but still not even star-power could save these shows or make them into hits but however I think MBC is targeting these shows with elder viewers or even these who love saguek’s. So I don’t think that the production team are at loss here since they only want to entertain certain audiences.

      • Shin MinA and Kim Soo Hyun rumors started at that time when Hong Sisters wanted to write that 100-years-someting-time-travel-blah-blah-for-sure-flop-drama. But, soon they abandoned that idea for good and started work on Jejudo Gastby aka Warm and Cozy. And this drama that you know today as new Hong Sister’s project actually was first offered to Kim Woo Bin and Kang Sora. Written characters for sure not KSH and SMA types off, but perfectly suits KWB and KS.

  7. all this leading man casting and nothing for lee min ho, ha haha haha ha. irony. after kim soo hyun his image does not see to have leading male lead anymore. lol, lots of pretty boys in korea to pick from. sorry lee min ho and fans lol

    • hahah are funny.. LMH would never take this kind of show? are you kidding me? 50epi saguek drama who would take that unless they want to damage there popularity. I think LMH is waiting on the fench for the right trendy show to come along and his patient have proven to be good in his favor so far.. I’m confident in LMH’s choice of scripts and his a true master in that where as I would disagree with KSH’s choice with Producer. If I were KSH I would have never declined the Hong sisters drama which could have highlighted KSH since the concept would have suited him better then YYH..

      • First kim woo bin was the one offered the hong sisters drama. Second it shows wat kind of actor Kim so hyun is for taking producer, meaning he actually cares about script and iprovement than popularity unlike lee min hi who’s still riding off heirs wave which I’m pretty sure has already died down. Also shows what kindof fan u r that u think ur oppa is picking roles for popularity.

      • The Hong sisters were first looking for KSH and Shin mina since there pictures were on Hong sisters facebook but I guess they declined quick behind the scences. So KWB was there man after that and he declined officially.

Popularity means everything in the entertainment world and don’t kid yourself they would all want to be in his position today and making large money and being loved allover the place. LMH really knows how to hand pick his shows. you see people casting right and left looking for break thru? The next trendy show yes please! there is huge pressure on him and not like the others since people expect him to produce giant hit after giant hit. so he has to choice right.

But, that’s not a time and article to talk about it.
I think it’s a great project to Yoo Ah In to take before army.

      • I saw you replied on the wrong section but its ok.. you are actully right now that I recall it was a 19 century rom-com then they changed into modern times or something.

I believe this new version fitted well with KWB and KSR who is riding high on misaeng but I’m not so sure with YYH involvement or excited about it. KSR really needed a better pairing or deserved a better playing partner then YYH IMHO. Guys like JIS, kwb, lsg, or ljk could have been better screen partners.

  8. But YAI is going to enlist this year…Will he still have much time for 50 episodes? Or are they gonna finish shooting first before broadcasting?

  9. There’re some actors/actresses whose dramas I’ll definitely watch regardless of script writer and PD/production team. Yoo Ah In is one of them. It’s just the level of my confidence in him tells me to not miss anything he’s in. All his dramas I’ve watched so far did not disappoint me even were not necessarily fabulous. (Fortunately I’ve never watched Fashion King.)
