Answer Me 1988 Confirms Final Casting with Leads Park Bo Geum, Hyeri, and Go Kyung Pyo

The casting has been finalized for Answer Me 1988, the third installment of the popular tvN Answer Me series, and it basically boils down to one rotten apple potentially stinking up what would otherwise be a perfectly fine dish. The production just released the confirmed cast and it includes the following: Hyeri of Girl’s Day as the female lead, Park Bo Geum is the male lead, and the supporting cast consists of Go Kyung Pyo (a Tomorrow’s Cantabile reunion), newbie actress Ryu Hye Young (last seen in Spy), movie actor Ryu Jun Yeol, Lee Dong Hwi (Lee Jun Ki‘s buddy in Joseon Gunman), rising young actor Ahn Jae Hong, with the parents played by third time returning veterans Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa. Filming is scheduled to start in the summer with an eye towards a fall air date on the cable network. One guess who I think is the rotten egg casting of the bunch before I vent a little below?

I can’t even get excited about the casting of talented Park Bo Geum and Go Kyung Pyo as the male leads of this series (they are both so due for breakout roles), not when the female lead ended up really being Hyeri. Don’t even compare her to the previous female leads Jung Eun Ji (a straight up newbie) and Go Ara (at times criticized for her acting) when it comes to acting inexperience. Prior to landing the Answer Me female lead, with Eun Ji no one knew what she could do as an actress so it was a shot in the dark whereas Ara has weathered her share of criticism but also a steady commentary on her improvement over the years before she landed the AM gig. Hyeri has been in two dramas recently (not a while ago) in Hyde, Jekyll, Me and Seonam Girls High School Investigators and she was absolutely shiteous in both.

I’m not even going to hold back my hatred of her acting (and yes, it’s just her acting, don’t know what she’s like as a star or idol), she cannot act one whit. At all. Not even a little. She makes Suzy‘s performance in Dream High Baeksang worthy, she makes Lee Yeon Hee‘s performance in Paradise Ranch seem like the height of amazing, hell I would even take all the bad acting in Blood and still find it way way way better than anything I’ve seen from Hyeri. And her cutesy act just grates, whenever I see pictures of her making the aegyo I just want to metaphorically punch her in the face because it looks so fake and manufactured. With that said, and I’ll leave this as a big MAYBE, the Answer Me series has done wonders in turning lesser actors and actresses into bona fide decent acting talent, so who knows what the PD can pull out of Hyeri. Maybe he can turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse, and if that happens then I’ll say a hallelujah and go off to enjoy the drama. Until then imma go pout in the corner.

Answer Me 1988 Confirms Final Casting with Leads Park Bo Geum, Hyeri, and Go Kyung Pyo — 58 Comments

  1. Why are people acting like the Reply series requires some ground-breaking acting? As if Eunji’s role in the first one wasn’t 60% her accent, 39% the support she got from Seo Inguk. The characters are just vessels for the package of nostalgia in these dramas, and Eunji’s role in the first of the series was merely a fangirl who screamed in a country accent. There was no depth to her character, and no character development from the first episode to the last episode. There is nothing three dimensional about the female lead role in the Reply series, and all you need is a cute girl who can scream to pull off a decent performance. There’s a reason why top notch, more talented actresses don’t latch onto this drama, despite its success.

      • I didn’t want Meryl Streep; heck, sometimes even Meryl Streep is too much Meryl Streep. I just wanted someone who could act, a little, and preferably not another girl idol. Sorry, but to me nearly all of them are terrible at acting and most of them are so hidebound by their image that they can’t do anything but sweet, cute, and energetic. Frankly, I’m sick of these cookie-cutter girls and I’m sick of the process. I really liked the first Reply drama, put up with the intense audience manipulation in the second, but I am afraid Hyeri is the last straw; sayonara, Reply.

    • You aren’t lying. I don’t know why people are acting like Go Ara or Eunji’s role took massive amounts of talent. I’m not saying they were bad by any means, but what most impressed people about Go Ara, for example, is that she got “fat” and had ugly hair. Her character was a toy between two guys everyone liked more than her.

And the whole threats of violence and I hate her face and everything about her crap is so over the top and uncalled for. Seriously chill out people.

    • LOL I have to agree with you. I didn’t find Eun Ji’s as fabulous as everyone else seems to find her, and I found the drama itself to be completely overrated. I disliked Eun Ji’s character A LOT and couldn’t bring myself to watch 1994 even though my friend promised me it was better than 1997. I think it’s the fact that Hyeri, known for her bad acting, has been brought into a beloved series as the lead, whereas someone like Eun Ji, no one really knew her abilities and the drama itself wasn’t all hyped up yet. Either way, I’m not planning on watching this anyway.

  2. Hahaha. Epic reaction! I haven’t seen Hyeri in anything so I’ve got nothing to say about her. But YAY for Go Kyung Pyo!

This is still a big MAYBE for me too. But if what you said about her acting is true, I’ll be here whispering(maybe chanting?) “One bad apple doesn’t spoil the bunch” again and again.

  3. I’m not surprised at all. I’m super curious WHY she was picked though. There seriously has to be a reason (and no it’s not agency power or sponsorship). I’ll have to check out an episode to see myself.

Though I don’t get why she irks people so much since she’s actually pretty funny and has a personality, unlike most robot female idols out there.

    • Lol I agree! Everything Koala said was exactly what I was thinking! She took the words right out of my mouth! That paragraph was epic!

  4. Perfect reaction and absolutely agree. She sucks at acting and the cute thing doesn’t work for me either. Annoyed because the male casting is spot on. Ugh.

  5. Omo I so excited about Park Bo Geum and Go Kyung Pyo! seriously…. until I see Hyeri’s name. (roll eyes) like koala, I really dislike her acting and all her aegyo because she just made it so obvious that she IS acting.

  6. Oh god!! Enough with the shitty udol actors.. Can’t Stand them in supporting roles, let alone as leads!! In the words of Shin SeGi:”congrats Hyeri, you match the shitty acting that is the trend these days”!!

    • LOL. At this point I’d prefer Yona as the female lead instead of Hyeri. She can act with tears when she knew Rion lied to her. Well, I hope Hyeri can improve her acting in such a short time. I trust the PD.

    • This line! Oh, this line… one of the best of any kdrama! Just think what the production teams must go through nowadays to cast a decent actor or an idol who can perform even a little bit! THNX for reminding us…you rock, my dear!!!

    • You took the words right out of my mouth! Gosh, Shin Segi was so spot on about that xD Now if only Hyeri would do what JI did and ditch the role…

    • Pretty late on this but just finished watching it. I have to ask…did you end up watching Reply 1988. What did you think of her acting and the drama in general?

Personally for me I only have good things to say about both it. Definetly preffered it over 1997. And I never watched Hyeri in anything else but I think she did a great job on the role.

  7. i can’t stand Hyeri and her shitty acting,
i pray to Drama God that she can miraculously improved in short period so that she’s at least watchable

  8. HAHAHAHAHAAAAA….I can’t stop reading your opinions words by words….Especially this one “She makes Suzy‘s performance in Dream High Baeksang worthy, she makes Lee Yeon Hee‘s performance in Paradise Ranch seem like the height of amazing” XD

  9. Seriously we are all acting like the female lead roles of the reply series requires baeksang worthy acting chops when lets be honest, it’s pretty hard to mess up the one dimensional female lead of the reply series. The male leads typically have the meatiest role and need solid actors to play them, so lets just be happy that they casted well for the male leads since thats where all of the acting will be needed.

The most important thing about the female lead is she has chemistry with the rest of the cast and the male leads. Maybe she works well with the rest of them and that’s why they casted her? Who knows?

  10. Jeezzzz……I’m out now with Hyeri as the lead. She’s not even in a supporting role! The rest of the cast are awesome. She must have a very powerful agency otherwise why can she even get a lead role in an established drama series despite getting stinky reviews about here acting.

    • Her agency is super small and not powerful in the least (no where near the power of the big 3: SM, YG, JYP) . But she herself is pretty popular after her stint on the female episodes of “real men”. Apparently she has tons of CF deals and each of the products that she advertises sells really well.

      • her agency dream tea entertainment supported by wellmade ent. and they’re known for their actors. even if company “small” compared to big 3 + cube + starship, they hardly no power one. connections over power of money, you know.

  11. No comments for the lead actress. But yay for the actors line up. Aside of Park Bo-geum and Go Kyung-po, I also recognize Ryu Jun-yeol and Lee Dong-hwi, both also belong to the same group of close friends as rising actors Ji-soo and Byun Yo-han. I’m so excited for them, hopefully this series will give them the chance to shine, too.

  12. Your words are just lol, and I agree with you entirely. Man I thought Han Groo was going to be the female lead so I was keeping my hopes up and excited about this drama. But now, Oh God No just No. Adios!!

  13. At this point, I feel like the auditions are just for name sake. Its the company that buys the role.. as SM did for go ara and now hyeri. Now my excitement for this drama has totally drained. Anyways, I was surprised to see Go kyung po as lead. Good for him.

    • Sm did not get ara the role. She basically chopped her gorgeous locks off, went back to her roots and audition with everything she got for it (twice). It was her dedication for the role that got the pd and the staff to finally give her the role

      • I watch Hyde but didn’t even get to Hyeri’s part so I don’t have any clue about her acting.

Maybe, she shave her hair and the PDs got shocked and amaze… You know, bald Hyeri. Hahaha! This is the only act that can surpass Ara’s dedication. ✌️

    • 2 exo members went to audition for roles in r1988 and they didn’t get in. Go Ara got in by her own merit. The producers thought she was well suited for it.

  14. I’m now actually very curious how much of what we call “acting” is the actor’s talent or the director’s ability to elicit, capture, and highlight those gems (s)he does find.

This should be a good litmus test.

    • The combination of good scripts + well developed character + well directed + acting’s talents = qualified drama LMAO.

  15. i’m excited! everyone worrying about the actors when we should be worrying about the story. i hope it is solid unlike the last installment…

  16. I’m so happy that Park Bo Geum was picked for the role. I really love his acting and can’t wait to see him in dramaland again! I wanted to drop AM series after a disappointing 1994 installment. But him being cast was the greatest motivation for me to watch it! On the side note, I never watched Hyeri in any drama yet. I hope her potential will be discovered by AM PD and scriptwriter since they are super good at it. 😀

  17. “And her cutesy act just grates, whenever I see pictures of her making the aegyo I just want to metaphorically punch her in the face because it looks so fake and manufactured.” +Infinity points. This is exactly how I feel about Hyeri and her aegyo shit. Whenever I see her fake aegyo, I just want to punch her.

  18. i’m not excited over the cast. both male and female. well, i guess, i’m going to skip another drama from replay franchise.

  19. Sigh, I’ve watched her work and she can’t act. She’s okay as small airhead supporting character but anything that requires actual acting she can’t.
Such a let down with this casting.
    I don’t think I’ll watch this.

  20. it was harsh because we just see her latest drama and she is not that good, it just reply series bring fortune and respect for some artist that not really known, like eunji at the time and go ara as actress at that time
and I think go ara did her best because she comes up with her idea in term of na jung hair style, it likes she want to prove her self
in Hyery case, she is already well known, had landed a drama recently with big names and in cable, it loses the break out thing in female lead with super well known idol and already acting recently, it lost the surprise in what makes Reply Series different, their female lead, well for others, I;ve seen plenty of them in small role and I think they got a chance now

  21. I loved Eun Ji in the first Answer Me series and at the time I thought she was a amazing actress… but after watching her next roles I realized that she’s actually terrible. She lucked out on AM1997 because her character WAS her personality.

Go Ara seemed to work very hard to improve her acting to get AM1994. But she hasn’t shined that brightly since then.

I just can’t imagine Hyeri in an Answer Me series, even as a small character let alone the lead.

I’m hoping the PD makes some huge magic trick and pulls some talent out of her.

  22. I can’t say anything about her acting since I didn’t watch any of her dramas, but I have to agree with koala about her cutesy stunt. If it looks fake even in photos it must be truly cringe-worthy in motion, so no thank you, Reply series, I’ll pass this one.

  23. I like the other casts, but Hyeri!!? She’s too annoying! It’s just like how I feel to Girls’ Day, I love Yura, Minah and Sojin, but I can’t love Hyeri!

  24. Oh man..well i guess bye bye to this. i can’t bear her enough to watch the drama and i don’t care for the male leads.
good for me, i have too many good dramas to watch anyway.

  25. I have never watched Hyeri act before. After her legendary performance of Problem, I’m just amazed at her complete lack of talent.

Btw, it’s Park Bo Gum/Bo Geom, not Bo Geum!

  26. I can’t believe they chose Hyeri instead of Han Groo, so it was a popularity contest more than acting ability.

  27. At this point, I think the second coming of Jesus has a higher chance of happening before Hyeri’s acting becomes watchable.

  28. I love the male castings, let’s not talk about the female lead! Honestly though for me, in the AM series it’s the guys that does it really. In both the previous series I remember the guys much more than the female lead, not to say the actresses weren’t good. They were good but the guys were just so much better. SIG and his hyung, trash and chilboongie
Let’s hope the new series will bring something new to the table. I have a strong suspicion I’d love the male lead anyway

  29. I’m excited to see Ryu Hye Young! I liked her in Spy but they really underutilized her character in that drama so I’m glad she’s getting a bigger role now 🙂
I totally agree that Hyeri is a bad actress. You don’t have to be a great actress for the Reply series but at least decent and girl can not act to save her life.

  30. OHHH KOAALAAAA. WE SHARE THE SAME HATREDDD. I DONT CARE WHAT EXPECTATION WE CAN LIFT UP FOR HYERI, I PURELY, PURELY HATED HER AND THAT MOSTLY COMES FROM HER FAKE CUTE ACT. I can’t even put into words how much I love Reply series and now it’s just feel like that some meany fake girl is stealing my number one love and left me crushed.

  31. two people that will ruin this drama for me hyeri/go kyung pyo. they need to have little screen time for both of these two.

  32. Who said this? ” She makes Suzy‘s performance in Dream High Baeksang worthy, she makes Lee Yeon Hee‘s performance in Paradise Ranch seem like the height of amazing, hell I would even take all the bad acting in Blood and still find it way way way better than anything I’ve seen from Hyeri. Until then imma go pout in the corner.”

IT’S SUCH A SHAME. HYERI IS SUCH A GOOD ACTRESS, YOU SHOULDN’T JUDGE FIRST! ARE YOU THAT KIND OF EXPERT IN ACTING?!

QOAH, HYERI’S ACTING IS RECEIVING A LOT OF PRAISE NOWADAYS, YOU SHOULD BE EMBARASSED.

  33. Whoever wrote this crap article must be really pissed of by the fact that Hyeri outperformed the leads of the other Reply series, I don’t understand why you hated her so much, but it only brought out how much of a worthless piece of crap you were, try less hate next time around bish

    • LOL right!? Her character and this installment in general has been my favourite. She did a wonderful job! I cant see anyone else as Duk Seon anymore. I think she fit the role really well. Surprised with all the hate towards her.

  34. Reading this now after I watched Reply 1988. Hyeri did an amazing job portraying Duk Seon. She gave life to the character.

  35. Saw this blog and thought “Oh, he/she must have eaten all the crap written here.” Haha! Hyeri did an AMAZING JOB in Reply 1988!!! She’s funny and full of emotions. Reply 1988 is a huge success. Bet you have rewatched it more times than we could count. #dontjudgecozitmightbackfireintoyou

  36. Wow those people from 2015 are definitely firm with their opinion on Hyeri hahaha i’d love to hear their opinion again after the 1988’s tremendous success lol. Judgemental freaks ?
