Young is the Word as Moonlight Drawn by Clouds Finalizes Casting of Park Bo Gum, Kim Yoo Jung, Yook Sung Jae, and Chae Soo Bin

Young even feels like an understatement when looking at the fully assembled cast for upcoming romantic sageuk drama Moonlight Drawn by Clouds. When the average age of the four leads is 19 year old, there is something to be said for this drama hewing close to the original source manhwa where the characters are all late teens and early twenties. Moonlight is casting early since it doesn’t air until August on KBS but perhaps the goal is to lock in some of the brightest buzziest young acting talent around.

22 year old Park Bo Gum will be playing the male lead of the Joseon crown prince, 16 year old Kim Yoo Jung is the cross-dressing relationship dispenser, 20 year old Yook Sung Jae is the poet/warrior/second male lead, and now 21 year old Chae Soo Bin joins the cast playing the second female lead who is the chosen princess consort for the crown prince. In many ways this is the young adult version of The Moon Embraces the Sun, with the cute coincidence that scene stealing child actress Kim Yoo Jung from that drama is now old enough to play the female lead.

I don’t have a problem with the younger cast for this drama, if everyone is young together then the ick factor is minimized and the typically romance chaste sageuk further helps to keep the lovey dovey developments emotional rather than too physical.

  1. I’m definitely going to check this one out b/c I have so much confidence in the leading couple. Even I never watched Park Bo Gum’s drama, people kept raving about Reply 1988 and he IS really popular in S. Korea now just by how often he’s mentioned on random street interviews from entertainment news. Is anyone gonna tell me this is media play again? Besides, he’s managed by the same agency as Song Joong Ki and is said to be close to him. Surely I’ll check him out given that I’m a huge fan of SJK.

I don’t have any concern a minor like Kim Yoo Jung cast to romance an adult. TV (not movie) Sageuk tends to be conservative in that aspect. So I expect expressions of love to be very modest in this drama.

  2. I usually dropped my initial comment first and then went back to read blog to see if my points also echos blogger’s opinions. I’m glad to see Koala not concerned about an underage 16 years old cast as a female lead in a romantic drama. It used to be very controversial in the case of High School Love On.

    • Kim Sae Rom was 13 year old when she played the female lead in HSLO. That casting will forever remain controversial even if the end result wasn’t supremely icky to watch.

  3. Yook Soon Jae looks very like Seo In Guk, whom Bogummy acted with in I Remember You.
Anyway, I worried most about Bogummy got a talentless co-star, so this news is a happy news for me. I can’t wait for the pics from the script reading and stills. Hopefully the PDs aren’t stingy with pics, coz August is still 4-month away.. and I need a daily dosage of Bogummy.

  4. I understand all the hoopla over casting but what matters to me the most is who the writer is and whether production will be working closely with the author of the manwha..anyone know? Been burned to many times…

    • It will be produced by the team who produced Who are You, School 2015. So, hoping the production has something good on their hand and don’t mess with this drama.

  5. I was so looking forward to this drama until they added Chae Soo-Bin. Why they have to ruin it by putting her in it…. So sad…

  6. “romance chaste sageuk further helps to keep the lovey dovey developments emotional rather than too physical.”
Gulp. Have you seen the drawings? There are scenes where nothing is chaste. Haha.

  7. I absolutely LOVE Kim Yoo Jung as an actress but (sigh) I don’t know about this one. I truly hope it does well and I am confident that Kim Yoo Jung is going to be AMAZING!!!
