SBS Goes Back to Medical for Upcoming Mon-Tues Drama Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim

Looks like SBS wants to shake off the ratings doldrums with current Mon-Tues drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Ryeo to try and recapture the audience with another medical drama to follow. Doctors with Park Shin Hye and Kim Rae Won was one of the ratings highlights this year and now the network has readied Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim to attempt the same feat. Despite the title I don’t think the drama will have the same teacher-student budding romance or even mentor doctor to subordinate workplace flirting. Instead critically acclaimed veteran Han Suk Kyu is the titular romantic doctor and teacher who gives up a top surgeon career to practice medicine out of love and caring, becoming a mentor who teaches young surgeons played by Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin the deeper motivations and purpose beyond their top medical skills. The drama has started filming for it’s early November premiere after Moon Lovers wraps up.

Joining leads Han Suk Kyu, Seo Hyun Jin, and Yoo Yeon Seok are veterans Jin Kyung and Im Won Hee, as well as cute young actor Kim Min Jae. Directing is long time SBS PD Yoo In Sik who recently did Mrs. Cop and You’re All Surrounded, but within his long list of dramas is Surgeon Bong Dal Hae which is one of my fave medical K-dramas. The script is being handled by screenwriter Kang Eun Kyung behind What’s With This Family, Gu Family Book, Man of Honor, and Baker King Kim Tae Gu.

      • Haha I personally thought it was a mess >< But if you find the sypnosis interesting and you like the cast, just give the show a try and see if it's your cup of tea 🙂

    • Seriously. Ugh. What a fantastic cast wasted on a lame making writer and yet another medical drama.

If only they had shown me that cast and said it was a sageuk….I’d be the happiest drama lover alive. :'(

      • ;_; Seo Hyun-jin and Han Seok-kyu in a sageuk together would be a dream come true.

At least the PD is good (did Giant among other things) and the writer wrote Dalja’s Spring once upon a time. As long as she doesn’t screw up completely, this might be okay. But ugggggh I feel your pain.

  1. This cast is fantastic, at least the acting won’t be subpar and no idol, what a relief. I don’t blame SBS, they tried experimenting with big budget and pre-production and got less than stellar results. Playing safe is okay for them considering the massive dud in their Mon-Tue current slot. I hope script and director is good since I have not seen any of their works before. Here’s to my Seo Hyun Jin who deserves every bit of success coming her way. She was born to act.

  2. Sigh i wish the channels will put a pause on the medical dramas now. We have had more than enough medical dramas and characters who are doctors for this year alone. And now SBS wants to put this drama right after SH:R. Sigh. Love Seo Hyun-jin and Jin Kyung. So i guess i will try watching for them.

  3. Sounds boring lol. I want some new jobs like scientist or pharmacy dealing with secret projects like forbidden GMO or danger medicines ? not really fan of YYS acting. He’s too bland. And Seo Hyun Jin sometimes too overact. But that senior actor like him in Secret Door.

  4. u completely wrote every thing I wanted to comment. I’m tired of Doctors in Kdramas. if it’s not about Doctors, then it’s lawyers, prosecutors or cop dramas. why not scientists, or Bankers or Structure Engineers etc. And about YYS and SYJ. YYS is kinda bland but he tends to do well in d right role. as for SYJ,she really tends to over acts most of the time. but I’ll pick her over HJE anytime.
