Nam Joo Hyuk Trades in Laughable Fantasy for Modern Good Looks in New Stills and Preview for Bride of the Water God

Nam Joo Hyuk was one of those who made it out alright in the hot mess K-drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, looking a dash more modern as the 13th prince but still suitably decked out. He should be the most relieved that the upcoming drama adaption of manhwa Bride of the Water God moved the setting from the fantasy period original to modern times, for the most part, because his look as the water god Habaek is so godawful as to be borderline unwatchable. Like, so so so badly styled with the two toned blue hair that appears to be wearing him and not the other way around. But once his Habaek goes to the modern times looking for his human bride then the eye sore goes away and everyone in the cast including Shin Se Kyung, Krystal, Gong Myung, and Im Joo Hwan thankfully looks their part.

  1. LOL, can’t they just use gorgeous hanbok like the original manhwa? And that hair… Not even the water God could save the mess.

  2. Lol the makeup is pretty awful too… They could’ve gone for understand, regal, instead they went for ott cartoonish style

  3. OMG I have never want to curse the drama gods as much as I do right now. What in the world is with the hair and the horrendous feathers..and the makeup is just pale skin and a ton of eyeliner. Is the Water God suppose to look like a goddamn peacock and got lost after taking a dive in the water. The costume design just looks so tasteless and cheap. URGHH the frustration

    • wtf are you a blind hater?? lmao. Looking at it, that actor NJH fits the Water god role, he looks ethereal, his got pretty face for a man, suits the lesser god or angelic or spiritual being drama roles, he looks yummy yum yum lol.

  4. His makeup is terribly awful!! Yikes 🙁 I don’t feel like watching this drama now…. I may try only because of IJH if he can get more screentime than what’s shown on the preview

    • Hahaha I know right..all of that effort would have been spared if you swap the roles..to me actually IJH actually has the Godlike visuals they are looking for, tall facial ethereal features can be just a little with good makeup withput going over like this on IJH and voila we have Ha Back.he has more onscreen charisma and more chemistry with SSK than NJH just from the teasers and behind the scenes alone aigoo?.

NJH seem to be more comfortable with Krystal based on behind the scene and press conference. He should have been the human but handsome role IJH is playing since he looks better without the wig and Clown makeup.

Or better still the director wanted to cast young upcoming or underrated actor. Then Lee Soo Hyuk was still the best choice for this..No need for the ridiculous wig and makeup..just give him a gorgeous hanbok and give him back his Gwi Hair but straighten it nicely.Perfect Habaek.Acting is decent enough..The voice already fit for a god character. He can be dark and sexy without even trying.NJH is trying to lower and have a booming voice from the teaser, it sounded a bit ummm weird..while LSK that’s his natural voice..anyway let’s wait and see..all the best BOTWG!!!

  5. Gosh!!!! The designer and stylist need to take a look at Three smiles Peach Blossom for fantasy styling which is done right. Less is more… :-(.

    • The styling in Eternal Love/Peach Blossoms is actually similar to the look of the characters in the original Bride of the Water God manhwa. Ah what could have been.

  6. I think it was right for the production team to move it into a modern setting. K-dramas do not have the budget like C-dramas to make fantasy series NOT look cringe-worthy.

  7. Seeing that wig was just the laugh I needed after an annoying day!! ITS SO TERRIBLE ???????WHY??!!! It looks like they just pulled it out of the Party City bag and plopped it on his head without even shaking it out!! ???????? Amazing.

  8. Looks like they were just trying to make him look more like a woman than a water god??? This whole production has made me side-eye TVN but Circle and Forest of Secrets have restored some of my faith in the network.

  9. The 5 minute trailer got me laughed so hard due to his monologue alone. It’s so funny lol (and not in a good way).

  10. @Harvester

I did not criticize the actor with my comment, but rather whoever decided on the styling and makeup, if you read my comment accurately. I would not hate on an actor before seeing their work.
There is nothing wrong with the main actor’s look but I just felt the production team was definitely not doing him or anyone justice with the makeup and styling choices.
If one was to compare the Water God’s looks in the manhwa to the drama, you would notice there could have been so many other choices of clothing, for I certainly did not see such a styling look in the manhwa when I was reading it.

  11. Please dont be too harsh on Habaek. He nailed the role perfectly. But tbh I actually liked (no, I LOVED) the blue haired God. I have a thing for long haired men and I believe the blue locks reflect the color of water since he is a water God. As per the manhwa, he gave justice to it and the long back hair is almost the same. I did not fall in love with him in CITT, SH:R, & WFKBJ BUT I HAVE TO SAY…I FELL IN LOVE FOR THE 16TH TIME!
