Stepmom to Daughter Blues with Ayase Haruka is the Ratings Winner of the Summer 2018 J-dorama Season

The summer 2018 J-doramas are done or nearly done with airing and there were three big name cast ones caught my eye. Ueno Juri was back with the J-remake of Good Doctor and Ishihara Satomi was being her most fabulous self with Takane no Hana (English title Born to be a Flower), but the ratings winner ended up being Ayase Haruka‘s family slice-of-life dorama Gibo to Musume no Blues (Stepmom to Daughter Blues) adapted from a popular manga. The dorama started off with 11.5% ratings and nowadays premiering in double digits is a win already, and the ratings went up steadily with a few small blips to the most recent episode 7 hitting 15.1%.

Audiences are connected to the story of a capable working woman who marries a man with a daughter and becomes her stepmom, and there is a twist in this story as well, but it boils down to she tries her best in her no nonsense work style way to raise her and be a good stepmom. Ayase Haruka gets two awesome leading men here in Takenouchi Yutaka as her husband and Takeru Sato as the younger man with a crush on her, and the story spans 10 years in narrative from when the little daughter is in elementary school through high school. I’ve heard nothing but raves for this dorama so check it out!

Stepmom to Daughter Blues with Ayase Haruka is the Ratings Winner of the Summer 2018 J-dorama Season — 16 Comments

  1. Awww… My two fave J-actors in the same frame ??? I will definitely check this out. It’s been sometimes since I watch a Yutaka’s drama after the nightmare that is “Nagareboushi”.

      • I watched 9eps and couldn’t find the magic. The relationship between Risa and the bro feel like creepily incestuos. Idk when exactly the main OTP started to feel anything for each other and I don’t like Risa too. She resorted to sex selling business without even trying anything else. She does not hold any day job but just getting into prostituition and not to mention how easily her brother manipulated her. That is just my opinion ofc.

  2. wow im surprised at sato takeru’s projects lately a morning drama…..second lead …hes making choices that actors with his level of success would never do which really goes to show how much he loves acting and how trying a variety of roles are important to him

    • so far most jdrama are ensemble casts, so its not really rare to see famous actor/actress being 2nd lead or just supporting.
And this drama is good. All the casts play their role wonderfully

      • Really? Thats interesting to know i just thought that with so many successful projects especially the RK movies i thought he would mainly stick to movies or just lead roles in dramas

  3. I hate good doctor (Japanese version), not because the drama is bad but success makes me cry every time I watch this drama, and I salute to the actors and actresses especially those who play children because it makes the humanity feel in this drama.

  4. Speechless on sato takeru as 2nd lead… He might love the script so much to take this role. I mean, if this were kdramas or dramas from. Other countries, it’s impossible to down grade your actor class except the character or script itself is amazing. But with this success, no wonder he took this role.

I’ve watched the first episode and stopped watching it. Hmm..should i continue? I didnt know at first that sato also casted in this drama… But he wont get the girl, so… Hmm.. Besides Dele and good doctor, i dont watch any new jdorama.

Dele is good with great acting, whole good doctor… The US version is the best. The worst is J version. Yamaken’s acting is just meh. Sorry. But he doesnt look ‘autistic’. But freddy, the actor in US version was amazing. But still, the story of this drama is good.

    • nah, its common in japan.
that dele 2nd lead, suda masaki is an “it actor” way more famous than Satoh right now and doing fine being 2nd lead.

    • If you watch the drama at least 2/3 through, Sato Takeru might not be considered the second lead. However, I can’t explain why because it will spoil the story. There is an unexpected twist which really caught me off guard and possibly because of all the publicity photos at the start of the drama. I have watched up to episode 8 and I really like the cast and acting in this one.

  5. why everyone so surprised with Satoh taking 2nd lead? Yes, he is famous for RK live action, but it didnt mean he must always get lead roles.
If you follow jdrama/jmovie, you’ll see many famous actor who already have several leading roles, doing 2nd or supporting roles in other drama. Its common things

  6. Sato Takeru plays very good here. He plays man with so many faces, and he is very good at it. Might be this the reason he would act here, ut must be so challenging for him

  7. One thing that i love about japan drama/movie world, any already popular or established actors/actress can become second or third lead and even additional supporting cast. I’m glad they didnt limit themselves with main acting gig only, and like this i always thought they were more humble and everyone felt like leads and very versatile

  8. I just watch this dorama, and it was really great! I didn’t like the first episode and stop watching until my friend told me that it was a great dorama.
I love all the actors, they really did a great job! You’ll find a humorous, sad, heartbreaking, and cute dorama.
