tvN Supernatural Drama Hotel Del Luna Releases Teaser Poster and First Look at Leads IU and Yeo Jin Gu

I realize why actors and actresses continue to work for the wildly inconsistent Hong Sisters. It’s because viewers will always blame the Sisters for their writing when one of their dramas falls apart and even their failed works don’t stain the resume of any leads so it’s a good gamble to try on one of their creative projects for size. With so much dull story lines in the multitudes of K-dramas, at least the Hong Sisters swing for the fences when it comes to crafting an interesting story concept. Their upcoming Hotel Del Luna about a supernatural hotel with ghostly guests situated in modern day Seoul sounds super cool. The first preview was nicely atmospheric and now the teaser poster builds on that with a view of the hotel hidden in the moon over Seoul. The second teaser this weekend has the same opening as the first teaser but adds a sneak peak at leads Yeo Jin Gu and IU looking very charismatic indeed.

tvN Supernatural Drama Hotel Del Luna Releases Teaser Poster and First Look at Leads IU and Yeo Jin Gu — 34 Comments

  1. Its amazing how swiftly IU moved past all the hate and prejudice against idol and singer actors to become the top most actress in the 20s bracket. Helps that she is insanely beautiful and a talented singer. There is a good reason why IU and Suzy dominate over ‘real’ actresses in the 1990-95 age groups and will always do so. Not just cf monsters but writers and directors adore them and literally everyone wants to act with them.

    • Suzy cannot sing and cannot act. Suzy is not in the same league as IU, dude. IU is multitalented, writing songs, singing, and acting ??

      • Are you serious Suzy can sing just fine. Her voice tone is very soft and melodious. It is true she can’t act much but as a singer and dancer she has no flaws. IU is the songstress for sure she is an all rounder. I agree with the OP comment that these girls dominate the field of cfs and garnering love from koreans. I think the early to mid 90s line is highly devoid of talent that draws in large audiences like TaeJiHye have for over 2 decades. IU and Suzy are the prettiest of that era followed by Yoona and Seolhyun which is why they dominate over actresses in terms of popularity. Most of them can’t act but they all have some sort of mass appeal and the only actual Actress that has mass appeal in that age range is Park Boyoung but her drama choices are the worst and most famous writers don’t want to work with her.

      • Suzy has the weakest voice in Miss A. Fine if you call that “singing”. We are sing in preschool at one point of our lives anyways 🙂

    • You just want fans of ‘real’ actresses to hate on Suzy and IU, don’t you? But I agree that IU is rising fast ever since My Mister and Netflix Persona and is on her way to becoming one of the most sought after 20s actresses. Whatever you make think of Suzy’s acting skills, you can’t deny that she is extremely popular and in demand. But I still think the most popular 20s actresses are Park Shin Hye, Kim Tae Ri, and Park Bo Young.

      • I don’t know what the intention of the commentator is but I also agree that both IU and Suzy are have big demand nowadays. I’m not sure I can agree about PSH and PBY popularity because while they were very popular since 2018 I’ve noticed their popularity has been going down and their recent dramas proved that. MOA was focused almost all on HB and even though Abyss is as bad as SWDBS it still hasn’t been able to get the ratings of that high. KTR is a fresh and is still rising right now but I think she will be able to hold out against the others. Maybe I see it differently but I think there has been a stronger shift towards idol actresses these days and they get the bigger and better dramas and roles. A lot has changed recently in dramas but this change has been happening for sometime now.

    • First off I think this distinction between idol and real actors is completely false. Especially former child actors don’t fall in the bracket of real actors. Acting is about talent and experience just like singing so why should one be superior to the other? Take DO for example he is much better than all the actors in his age range his being an idol has nothing to do with his acting abilities. So many rookie actors are worse than idol actors which is why I never understood why people keep rooting for rookie actors. Without the right training and experience and most importantly talent everyone is equally good or bad. Idols have the advantage of building not 1 but 2 resumes and excelling in both like IU, DO and Suzy have managed to do. I would rather see more idols acting because they have more experience than rookies since all music videos require a decent level of acting. The term real actors is false one entirely.

      • @domino lol are you said DO is much better actor than YSH, YJG and PBG? Even JKY is better than him. And NJH have more charisma than him.
About IU, she already in K-drama land since 2011 so yeah she’s supposed to be good right now.

      • I don’t know what problem you have with him but Kyungsoo is a much better actor than all the people you mentioned. He has a more varied filmography than any of them, has more awards and critically acclaimed praise than all of them combined. He has more charisma and versatility than all these sub par actors you mentioned. You must be living in a delusional world if you think otherwise. Kyungsoo is one of the biggest actors in chungmroo and his ticket power is better than your oppas combined.

      • @joke DO’s fans is really something, you make me think, his acting in hyunbin level (of course its totally a joke like your name). DO is doing well in his debut era, but after that he’s never improved his acting. Versatile? Do you mean his sinister’s look? He always using that look in his projects. he has more filmography, thats why he’s supposed to be better than any real actor in his age, but he is not, his acting is very limit. Do you really think that PD casted him for his acting alone? I mean you know he is from exo right? And you know exo’s members get the same chance like him eventho their acting is so bad, but who care, the pd will still cast them. Their fanbase will buy all the ticket, yes, but swing kids is a failure so the PD is wrong this time.
And if you want to know who a great idol actor until now, its im siwan. DO is good, but not that great and totally not in the same level with actors I mentioned before. Nope

  2. Koala didn’t update about arthdal chronicle because that drama was flop. Poor song joong ki doesn’t have good eye to good pick good drama after flop battleship island.

    • On Song Joong Ki:

~ Fully paid check for drama
~ Top buzzworthy actor for the month
~ Decent yet still climbing ratings for cable TV (7,7% as per the last update, peaking on 8,9% nationwide)
~ More experiences through acting in different genre and respected senior actors

The budget burden is on the production team, flop or not. SJK really has nothing to loose man, how can he be poor? Lol.

  3. I’m still not a fan of this pair but both are beautiful in their own way so I’ll watch it for them. I find YJG very uneven as an actor because he has been very bad in some roles like Orange Marmalade, Reunited Worlds and now Absolute Boyfriend but he is brilliant is some roles like Circle and Crowned Clown. His kissing is very cringe to watch but IU should be able to lead on that.

    • I think that he is amazing in sageuk and melo (serious roles). The top of his generation. However, he has room for improvement in romcoms like Absolute Boyfriend. Romcom is quite new for him despite his years in the industry, so I think he’ll grow with time. Also, in interviews he says that he lacks romantic experience (never been in a relationship), so that might contribute to it.

      • That has to be the worst excuse. He is an actor he should be able to convincingly “pretend” to be in love if he is an good actor. Seohyun and Boyoung have no romance experience either but they always have off the charts chemistry with their leads. @jay Finally somebody said what I have been thinking. His acting is uneven because he lacks maturity as a person and actor. It might get better but right now he is still stuck with his child actor image.

  4. Apparently this drama was conceptualized in 2012 and was the inspiration for Master’s Sun. Hopefully it’s good because Master’s Sun was the last drama I liked from them. Excited to see IU back in dramaland. She looks so beautiful and elegant here.. I’m still used to her haggard but still pretty Jian in My Ahjussi lol.

  5. LOL! How come Suzy came into this discussion for this particular post? She seems nice and all but can’t act even despite giving her the benefit of doubt for 6 dramas. Even if she did turn in a decent acting performance in While You Were Sleeping, it doesn’t mean much since the Dream High screenwriter tend to adapt roles to the actors/actresses rather than the other way. IU on the other hand also started out green and was not very strong as an actress, however she’s truly grown on that front. She exceeded all my expectations in My Mister (I’ll pretend that Moon Lovers never happened, because everyone was literally bad in that one), so I’m really stoked for her new drama!

@valentinazara: Why the hate on Arthdal Chronicles (which has nothing to do with this post to begin with)? It’s far from a flop with ratings around 6% and being a cable drama, that’s pretty solid. Personally I’m loving this drama to pieces! It has awesome cinematography, great lore and world building, really interesting story and fascinating characters. It’s giving me nostalgic vibes of Legend but it’s also nothing like it, this show is much darker and much more intensive, the world bulding and storytelling is richer and more well thought out and the story is more fast paced too. Can’t wait for more of this show!LOL! How come Suzy came into this discussion for this particular post? She seems nice and all but can’t act even despite giving her the benefit of doubt for 6 dramas. 6. Interesting that Koala writes TWO posts about the same trailer of Hotel Del Luna when it is airing after the much hyped something Chronicles that is currently airing

    • Overhyped drama has bad CGI, hair, makeup and costumes with a plot copy pasted from 10000 BC and Apocalypto. I enjoy watching it more as a parody with all the different coloured blood. The science in pre historic people is less believable than dragons and unicorns. ?

      • Wow you must absolutely hate fantasy. Arthdal Chronicles is a drama foremost and is loosely based on prehistoric people with a fantasy spin on it, anyone watching fantasy knows to keep an open mind and being a hardcore fantasy reader and watcher myself I think the show passes with flying colors. This is NOT meant to be a documentary of prehistoric ppl to begn with, LOL it would totally fail on that aspect. Also CGI is nowhere as bad as you make it out to be, try chinese wuxia dramas if you want reference now that’s what I call BAD. I was s bit worried about the bad forest costume from the stills that it didn’t feel out of place when I was watching the drama so that’s fine with me. I’d rather have a well thought out fantasy world and storyline and proper character arcs over the topnotch HQ special effects and costume or makeup. Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course, I just find all the hate unwarranted and quite sad… They are trying something new in kdrama, last attempt at a fantasy setting like this was 12 years ago with Legend and they are doing pretty a pretty good job with Arthdal Chronicles. Let’s see if it stays this good until the end!

      • Have you saw all 4 epi?Because it’s isn’t as bad as Knetz are making it. Infact 4the pi got highest rating that show Knetz are curious about the show. CGI and plot is pretty decent with beautiful cinematography. If you expect a Hollywood style cgi then you are bound to disappoint.

  7. Wow some of you are really harsh!

I think Yeo Jin goo is doing amazing in absolute boyfriend. It has charm, humor and heart. I get pulled in with the acting chops of the main leads. So much fun.

Arthdal chronicles is an adventurous journey, it’s better than I thought it would be.

    • Same. I’m really liking his performance in Absolute Boyfriend. He’s one very lovable robot in that drama that you can’t help but root for. Rom-com ain’t YJG’s forte but some people are acting like he’s some foot actor in it. OM and RW have got terrible female leads who didn’t even try. For Absolute Boyfriend, I’m enjoying the chemistry between Yeo Jin Goo and Minah.

      • Absolute Boyfriend is a bad drama completely with general bad acting. Seo Kangjoon made a much better robot than Jingu ever will. I find his romcom acting extremely limited like most others do but saying he doesn’t have romance experience to justify it is very silly. Minah has a lot of chemistry with Jonghyun more than Jingu which has nothing to do with their romance experiences. Romance genre has never been his strength.

      • I’m sooo looking forward to this drama! Curious.. intrigued and excited about it! As for My Absolute Boyfriend (which i’m also enjoying, i must say), Yeo Jingoo admitted that romcoms aren’t exactly his forte, i admire his courage to challenge himself and try to climb out of his comfort zone.. he is young, he has so much to learn and he is more than willing to take the leap! And i like that attitude ? I believe all actors (great & small) have their strengths and weaknesses.. if we can’t accept that.. then try being one, you might discover how demanding and cruel their world could get with ‘harsh’ viewers like us… ? so, let’s just enjoy the ride.. Arthdal, Absolute Boyfriend, Hotel del Luna.. take your pick ?

      • I enjoy Absolute Boyfriend too. Disagree with @lilac, the general acting of all cast is actually not bad. YJG may be a bit stiff but that’s the Robot vibe which is written into the storyline – the robot is made to please the female lead regardless of the intentions. Minah of coz should have more chemistry with her ex-boyfriend (a human) being together for 7 years than a robot she has received for less than 2 weeks. Everything makes sense. Don’t expect a robot to behave like a human – that’s the message of this drama. This drama derives from a manga (a pure robot anime) unlike the one SKJ was in which alternate between a human and a robot. There is no point in comparison!

      • lilac – Okay, calm down there and just go back to your whatever rewatch of AYHT if you love it so much, lol. And why are people so triggered over Jingoo never being in a relationship as a probable reason for him not being phenomenal in rom-coms? I might be out of the loop but did he ever use that as an excuse? And for Jonghyun and Minah having better chemistry, they’re supposed to have a 7 year history, what do you expect? And so far, Minah’s character had been mostly pushing the robot away. Those few moments that the robot and Dada shared together worked really well for me and I enjoyed it. Well, you didn’t. It’s unfortunate that it didn’t work out for you, but there are some who are enjoying Absolute Boyfriend for its story and acting, let people enjoy things.

  8. Guess, I’m one of the very few people enjoying Absolute Boyfriend. I think Yeo Jin Goo’s doing a great job. I just watch it as some childish silly rom-com with lots of heart, and so far, I’ve enjoyed the heck out of it. It is what it is and I like it.

    • Oh, i’m enjoying it too!! It’s fun, light but in most times.. it hits right in the feels! I wasn’t actually expecting much from the show but hey, it actually tackles issues we’re afraid to confront ourselves.. lol! Now this…. HDL… it seems very mysterious and appealing.. so yeah.. i’m in ?

      • Nice! I agree, it doesn’t feel to heavy and can be watched without thinking too much about it. It’s funny but will give hard-hitting lines from time to time. I’m liking the story for HDL, I hope it will be as fun as Master’s Sun. I really enjoyed that drama.

  9. I find the Hong Sisters either hit it out of the park or go middle of the road. I thought they hit it out of the park on their last drama only to find it spluttering out around midway. Jeju Island Gatsby was okay but nothing special. I love The Master’s Sun and Greatest Romance so I’ll cross fingers, but I definitely have trust issues with the sisters.

If it’s not well written, it really doesn’t matter who the actors are (Gong Yoo in Big agrees with me.)
