Choi Woo Shik Entertaining Offer for Hollywood Film Past Lives

If you would have told me when he debuted that K-actor Choi Woo Shik would be a movie picking genius and now on the cusp of breaking into Hollywood I would have laughed. And yet here we are as the Parasite cast member is entertaining an offer to do a US film called Past Lives. It’s smart to get an offer out to him before the Oscars as Parasite is now a legit contender for the biggest prize of the night after the cast won at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards two weeks ago. His movie hits have also included Train to Busan, Okja, The Witch: Part 1 The Subversion, and Monstrum so he’s definitely doing so so well on the big screen. Less so in drama land, I still remember based as one of the officer entourage in Rooftop Prince and his last headlining drama Hogu’s Love was five years ago in 2015 and I don’t think he’s missing out for staying on the big screen.

  1. He is a good actor. Loved him in High..He put acted everyone in that drama. Good for him to break into Hollywood. Parasite movie has a Lot of good actor and actresses. I would like to watch the movie if I can sometime in the U.S.

  2. Hogu’s Love is still one of my favorites – just so sweet and low key.

He must be one of those actors people like to work with as he has been in a few marquee films already. He’s good, of course, and I think his chill personality helps. Also, he lived in Canada and is comfortable with English. I love seeing his interviews along side the famous Hollywoodians. So much poise!

    • Somehow I don’t find him comfortable conversing in English as he always appeared struggling to find words, thus alternating to speak in Korean instead. Comparing with RM of BTS, RM is always more confident and comfortable speaking English.

Anyway, CWS is a good actor and evidently so. Otherwise, Bong Joon Ho wouldn’t bother to work with him twice. Such an acclaimed director as that, definitely picked real talents.

  3. He is a good actor and he has chosen right scripts in terms of movies from the get go. He never focused much on dramas anyway. Hogu’s Love, I adored that show and I was actually hoping he would make a drama comeback. It also helps that he doesn’t have an accent issue as he grew up in North America so it should be an easy transition for him. But I hope he picks up good script, lord knows Hollywood doesn’t know how to cast Asian actors in good roles. There are exceptions but in general they tend to type cast Asian actors.

  4. It’s a no brainer, he’s a talented actor with international recognition. He’s also Canadian so will have no problem with English or even French. It’s a natural progression. Especially since many Korean actors have paved the way in the past with their international work like Lee Byung Hun, Bae Doona, Ma Dong Seok, Han Hyo Joo. The market is ripe and he’s capitalizing on the demand, more power to him. I’ve always liked him and think he has a good head on his shoulders, so I’m curious to see where this will take him.

    • I like Choi Woo Shik as an actor and was surprised to learn that he lived in Canada for a decade or so. His English, however, is not that strong from what I saw in a quick interview after the cast win of the SAG acting award. Perhaps he was nervous, excited, overwhelmed but he had to switch back to Korean when his English faltered. Also, he’s spent the past 7-10 (?) years in Korea so it’s no surprise that his English skills may not be as strong as before. And like a lot of people, his listening comprehension of his second language is probably a lot better than his speaking ability, so working in Hollywood should not be a problem.

However, I highly doubt he speaks any French…most Canadians outside of Quebec do not speak French (sadly) even though it is a mandatory subject in public schools from grades 4 to 9. I took French even through first year university and still can barely hold a conversation in my country’s second official language 🙁 But! I made sure my kids are bilingual…now if only I could have managed to have them learn more Korean from their grandparents~~~sigh

    • what logic is that living in Canada for some times will automatically make him perfect in English and French. My chinese friends with Canadian passport can’t speak English that well.

  5. I love Choi Woo Shik! He’s a great combination of boyish charm and good acting. He was great as the bumbling kid with his heart on his sleeves in Hogu’s Love! Can’t wait to see him in Hollywood films, not that it truly would mark his greatness, it’d be more about getting his name out there.
