K-ent Eyes Upcoming tvN Sat-Sun Drama The Devil Judge to See if it Continues the Breaking 10% Ratings of its 2021 Predecessors Mine, Vincenzo, and Queen Cheorin

Ooooh, actual pressure, I love it! tvN Sat-Sun female empowerment plus makjang rich people drama Mine ended its successful run this past weekend, with the final episode 16 getting 10.512% ratings. 2021 has been tvN’s year in the Sat-Sun time slot, in previous years they got competition from jTBC but this year every single weekend drama from tvN has been a hit to a big hit to a mega hit. Queen Cheorin (Mr. Queen) kicked off the year and it’s highest rating was 17.371% then Vincenzo got 14.363% ratings as its highest mark, and just like Mine all three dramas got its highest rating with the final episode which showed sustained interest through the end. Unlike in 2021 which had the super mega hit Crash Landing on You which started in 2019 and ended in early 2020, the remainder of the dramas in that time slot have all been unable to breakout into the 10% range starting from Hi Bye, Mama!, When My Love Blooms, It’s Okay to Not be Okay, Secret Forest 2, and Start-up. So now the upcoming The Devil Judge (Demon Judge) with Ji Sung starting this Saturday will definitely have big shoes to fill and also right after his wife Lee Bo Young‘s successful Mine.

  3. Am I the only one that is getting annoyed about the direction of kdramas. I find them extremely pretentious nowadays. All these actors now act with a blind stare and spit out their words in an ultra-slow manner to create suspense. But the Korean language does not lend itself well to this type of acting.

Also, these Korean posters are all lifeless. I like posters that at least give some information about the show. Without reading the text, I would have no idea what Mine or Vincenzo is about. They also all forget to smile, because that is not “high-fashion”. Check out a poster such as those of “Misaeng”, “It’s Okay, That’s Love” and it makes you excited.

  4. Koala got some typo… cloy started in 2019 and ended in early 2020..
..My prediction abt tvn having a great year seems to be really happening..
Good to see that after Lee Bo Young…Her husband is taking the slot…I am excited for this drama.
Mine is still in my watchlist and i need to start watching it asap.

  5. Brilliant decision to bring established actors that Koreans love, TvN!. First with Vincenzo, Mine and then Devil’s Judge.

  6. From the trailers, it looks much much better than Mine. If Mine could get to 10%, barring any surprise Devil Judge should get there too.

  7. The succeeding dramas can’t seem to surpass the ratings of their predecessors, though. Queen Cheorin higher than Vincenzo higher than Mine. Agree with @kitai that Devil Judge could also make it to 10%. Mine was just not a good drama, despite the high ratings. It had many parallels with the writer’s past work, Lady in Dignity, which was more enjoyable, engaging and entertaining. And seeing how it managed to hit 12% in its finale, it seems K-audience agrees.

    • Even though I get its appeal to the Korean viewers and therefore its high ratings, Vincenzo was also not a good drama. But that’s a debate for another day.

      • LOL. I agree. It goes back to what I wrote in a previous post about how high ratings protect a not-so good drama from too much criticism. But it’s definitely not Jae-bum Writernim’s best work.

      • Oh boy. I’m going to have you fight you on this one. Vincenzo got super high domestic ratings, even higher international ratings (broke into and stayed in global Netflix rankings), huge social media buzz, and solid critical reception – an all kill. I get why people personally might not like it, but it’s hard to argue that it isn’t the biggest kdrama of the first half of this year and probably one of the biggest of 2021.

For 2020, succeeding dramas weren’t able to top CLOY’s ratings either, so maybe there’s a seasonality trend at play.

TVN is killing it in 2021.

    • Taste aside. Vincenzo has all the ingredients and signs of a domestic and international success’ story. Probably the one of the rare ones in 2021 to do so. Oh..it managed to do without getting LMH, a so-called female writer, and an /S grade actress.

    • Vincenzo may not have the best plot logically but it’s definitely one the most entertaining show I’ve ever watched. I just had so much fun watching it and because I watch TV shows purely for entertainment purposes, I rate Vincenzo very highly.

      • Attempt #2 at posting.

+1 on Vincenzo. Show is BANANAS. The plot is absurd, but it leans into absurdity. I haven’t seen any show mix genres so well, and it was definitely the most entertaining watching experience Ive had. It took over all of my social media, from TikTok to Twitter. Even Western entertainment reporters were writing about it.

I don’t think Mr. Queen or Mine constitute as Hallyu/international hits. So yes, so far VC is 2021’s lone “all-kill” drama as @LH put it.

  8. Anti-heroes are the new trend and judging by the trailers and exceptional cast Devil Judge is bound to have high ratings. Won’t be surprised if it breaks 20% with its dystopian concept. Jisung is already guaranteed that Best Actor nomination and it might even be his best performance till date. Predicting it will start in the 8% ratings range might even be 9%.

    • Yes this is spot on. There are certainly trends and anti-hero, darker dramas seems to be it right now. I will take this over the corny and clichéd romance dramas we are getting lately that are all interchangeable with one another.

  9. Another +1 for Vincenzo here! That drama was BONKERS. Yes the storyline is absurd, but it makes that absurdity work. I haven’t seen any drama mix up so many genres so well. Ive never had so much fun following a show. It took over my social media channels, from TikTok all the way to Twitter. Even famous Western celebrity columnists were posting about it.

I don’t think either Mr Queen or Mine qualifies as Hallyu/international hits, so for now, VC is indeed the “all kill” of 2021 as @LH put it.
