Makjang Queen Screenwriter Im Sung Han’s Second Season of TV Chosun Drama Marriage Lyrics and Divorce Music Continues its Ratings Success and is Less Crazy that Penthouse

I still remember the infamous Princess Aurora aka “Im Sung Han’s Death Note”, the drama where the behind-the-scenes shenanigans resulted in onscreen plot developments where character after character was either shipped off or killed off (and not resurrected). Writer Im Sung Han kinda lost her ratings touch after that maybe because actors didn’t want to work with her anymore and/or viewers were wary of her brand of crazy so her subsequent drama Apgujeong Midnight Sun wasn’t a hit. She retired in a huff only to unretire last year coming back with TV Chosun drama Marriage Lyrics and Divorce Music. It was a hit from the start for the smaller cable network and now season 2 continues as ratings are now at 9.334% midway through the season. I find it amusing that the Queen of Makjang has been supplanted in crazy writing by Penthouse writer Kim Soon Ok who until Penthouse did not demonstrate she had the penchant for absurdity. I still stay away from Im Sung Han but for those watching Marriage Lyrics is it actually entertaining and interesting?

  3. IMO it has some of the worst dialogue and acting I’ve seen in a long time. I swear there’s going to be a third season, the pacing is so slow. To me, it’s not entertaining, it’s just bad. I hate myself for watching any of it. I don’t understand Koreans love for this kind of stuff. There are better dramas out there getting lower ratings.

  4. Its not Makjang in its totality, just a story about flawed men, women and real in a lot of way. The 50s couple and their story is very well done, the aftermath of divorce, children, hurt very well done. The creepy part is the 40s step mother, son and his wife and that story has makjang tones. The 30s story is frustrating but not unreal. Mistresses can get upper hand if child is involved and wife is free spirited, career focused woman. I hope in 3rd season, all 3 women get their strength back.

    • Yes, I wouldn’t have called the first season makjang. Now that the screenwriter is doing stuff like having stepmom dance in her lingerie while imagining her stepson’s face on the moon and brought her dead husband back as a ghost, her makjang roots are coming out more.

  5. I am so tired of these dramas and their toxic characters always leaving a awful taste in my mouth. At this point I would rather they bring out the Cinderella tropes instead. They portray women in the worst light and then men are basically almost portrayed as victims.

One woman is attracted to her step-son and another hits her husband multiple times in front of his parents. Like there isn’t already alot of push back against feminism in the country. The women are seductive, conniving, arrogant, B***hy, etc.

I can see it going into 4 more seasons looking at the writer’s usual dramas length.

  6. I love, love, love this drama. In season 3 I would like to see Pi Young pregnant from Yusin (the pregnancy happening before their divorce) and Mr. Seo marrying her. I want Yusin to still be obsessed with getting her back as she goes happily along with her new life with Mr. Seo, Jia and the twin sons that she is now pregnant with; leaving Yusin a very regretful alcoholic that he destroyed his beautiful home and now someone else has his perfect wife. It also kills him that Jia loves Mr Seo and hates A Mi as A Mi gradually fades out of his focus and his life. He now knows that he is nothing without Pi Young.
Pi Young, as the wife of SF Electronics eldest son, begins to live the rich life she deserves as Seo Ban moves back to his father’s estate ( his apartment is too small to accommodate a family)
