Kim Young Dae Leaves KBS Drama School 2021 After Filming Begins, in Talks as Male Lead for Lee Sung Kyung’s Next Drama Shooting Star

The behind-the-scenes drama with the next installment in the KBS School series continues and this time it’s after filming has begun. Second male lead Kim Young Dae has left School 2021, solely on his side with his agency announcing that it was due to disagreement with the production as things were not the way it was originally agreed to. The production team countered that they were disappointment with his unilateral departure. The leaves the production in a lurch as filming is underway and the other three leads Kim Yo Han, Jo Yi Hyun, and Hwang Ba Reum Byul waiting for the fourth wheel to be replaced. Kim Young Dae’s departure follows original female lead Kim Sa Ron leaving and then the next female lead Ahn Seo Hyun basically let go by the production due to conflict with her father manager. For Kim Young Dae he’s got another project lined up as he’s in talks to be the male lead of Shooting Star which has already signed Lee Sung Kyung as the female lead. Whew, it’s like a game of musical chairs with these youngsters.

  2. I thought he was supposed to be the male lead? If he was the second lead then it’s better to be cast with LSK, I guess.

It’s just odd since filming already began and he had chosen to do School drama instead of the one with Seo Hyun Jin.

    • Apparently he only auditioned for the role in SHJ’s drama and then claimed that he was in the running, but he was ultimately passed on, so technically he can’t “reject” the role though that was the statement released by his company.

  3. I don’t know what happened behind the scenes but if it’s true KYD left School 2021 to appear in the drama with LSK then that’s unprofessional. If you signed a contract then you need to keep your promise, backing out when the filming has already begun doesn’t make him look good.

    • After reading all the other comments if KYD left School 2021 because they were trying to use him and not because he wanted to a bag lead role then that’s a different story. I wish him and all the others actors good luck!

Thank you @lydia1 for your insight on this topic it was helpful. ☺️

  5. Some second male lead roles in a drama are better than first leads in another project. In fact, Start Up is a perfect example of that. Who Are You: School 2015 is another. Also no matter how awful the writing is, an audience will tune in for the School series. Meanwhile, whether his drama with LSK will actually get any intial buzz remains to be seen. Let’s hope this decision doesn’t bite him back.

    • Revising this after reading additional comments below. All the best to actors and co-actors, of this drama and the one with LSK. School series used to be a notable vehicle for a lot of upcoming newcomers and rookies, so if he’s that big of a star to be acting opposite a young idol and actress, definitely this isn’t the next step in his career to be taking.

  6. School 2021 has a bad luck, better stop it, than gave hope to actors who wanted to this but can’t go on because of issues, felt sad towards Yohan, he’s been waiting since 2020. Just rewatch School 2013 the best one, others are just so so…

  7. I do not have any insider news on this and this post is solely based on my own conjuncture about what might have happened to cause the fallout. My guess on the reason for his sudden departure might be that the direction of hid role probably took a different turn when filming started. They probably promised him co ML status and watered it down to an unlikable support when the first scripts arrived. To be honest I would leave if I were him too. His career is doing well and playing second fiddle to idol with only another drama under his belt and a rookie actress will do his career no favours. Go from Penthouse to this, there is no plus for him doing this drama at all. At least he walked early and not halfway through production. I remembered during School 2015, NJH was belittled, humiliated and felt terrible when YSJ’s popularity caused the writers to rewrite so much of the script to expand on 2nd ML’s role. They even had to sacrifice the side storylines leading to support casts having little to no screen time to blow up the love triangle. If what was promised to him was not what it was after seeing the first scripts, I actually support him walking away as since when is it his job to make KYH a big star at his expense. The production company seem messy and unprofessional from day 1 with the handling of the FL situation. Anyway shooting star is definitely a better vehicle for him. All the best to both productions.

  8. It’s better to cast opposite LSK than rookie actors who couldn’t prove their talent yet. Actually, Lee Sung Kyung’s new drama created enough buzz due to the plot and director. And plus,he’s lucky to star with such a beauty

  9. I don’t believe he left the production just like that he had his own reason for that, additionally, Kim yo han isn’t so talented to be the main lead making Kim young dae second one who has more potential as well as he would shine more than first male lead in that drama. Kim Yo Han would be overshadowed by him. And I have a feeling Shooting star would be smash hit as the plot seems interesting and interesting for public who are curious to know behind the kdrama industry. Moreover, LSK is female lead that can have insane chemistry with her any co-star. Plus, tvn has high hopes for this drama they will promote it widely

  10. Kim Young Dae reminds me of Jo In Sung in the very early days – angsty good looks, captivating screen presence with his postures, movements and all – then came along “What Happened in Bali” that catapulted him to stardom. KYD needs just that one drama too.

  11. Just a correction: Ahn Seo-hyun was the original lead but was unceremoniously ousted in an attempt to cast Kim Sae-ron.

I am so puzzled by Kim Young-dae’s management’s decisions. They rejected the Seo Hyun-jin drama where he would have been prominent, to take School 2021 and play second fiddle to a mere idol whose only acting experience is to suck so hard in that A Love So Beautiful remake. I thought he saw value in the School name, but now he is walking away anyway.

  12. This drama is cursed. For School 2020, there was a change of production and the FL had to leave, they said it was her father but honestly it’s shady. Kim Sae Ron was casted pretty fast by the new production. Now, it’s School 2021, this time it’s Kim Young Dae who left. I understand him, the ML is not a good actor and he already acted 2 roles of highschool student, so if they changed the script…

  13. AHS was the original female lead who was dropped without any notice and she waited a whole year for the drama and even posted about it. KYD dropping out is poetic justice in a way and there is something seriously wrong with this production and KBS who refuses to give it up.

    • I don’t feel sorry for KYD because he knew what he signed up for: to be second lead to the untalented idol first lead. Yohan was billed as the male lead since the first iteration of the drama in spring 2020 and was always billed as the male lead so KYD and his team shouldn’t be acting brand new about it now

If his agency was dumb enough to sign for him playing second string to a foot acting idol even after KYD has been getting so much attention for Penthouse since Oct 2020 that was there stupid mistake. It’s not cool for them to suddenly turn around and try to break their contract because better offers came along.

  14. Honestly I think we aren’t hearing the real story on both sides. This drama casting is shady and people saying it’s unprofessional because he signed a contract. But the contract goes both ways. The production team can’t say one thing but do another and just expect everyone to be ok with it.

  16. seems like the production team really wanted kim yohan to be happened. lol. so messy.. and actually the original fl was ahn seohyun, then they offered the role kim saeron. but saeron rejected it most probably

  17. So the title of LSK drama is Shooting Star? That is Hoo-joon’s agency in So I Married The Anti-Fan. These two dramas has too many similarities. KYD has similarity to Choi Tae-joon especially to his character Hoo-joon in SIMTAF. KYD will also be playing a top star like Hoojoon.

  18. If it was really because of the script, then he wouldn’t have a backup ready before announcing that he’s stepping down. Clearly he was already preparing to drop the drama even before filming, and decided to go through after having found an alternative. The issue with the production company is one thing, him being unprofessional is a different matter.
