When novels and mangas are ones first love, I’ve lived through countless visual adaptations whether movies or dramas and the reaction from myself as a book fan is first and foremost, does this actor/actress fit the role as described in the words and pictures of the pages. I know we’re in the world of constant revision, where if a character is written as one ethnicity or gender it can be adapted differently onscreen, but to a fan of the original work what we want first and foremost is that any attempt to live-action a beloved story perhaps just do it as written/drawn? I don’t know, it’s a weird minefield to share that feeling but if one wanted to put a story onscreen with whatever role cast just come up with a new one rather than changing an existing one. That’s how the whole vibe of Kim Go Eun in upcoming tvN adaptation of popular webtoon Yumi’s Cells just comes across to me who read a good chunk of the story. She’s just not Yumi, she can be the best actress in the world and give a mind blowing performance and I can come to accept her as live-action Yumi, but the whole visual vibe is so off in every still and now poster I’ve seen of her. Once again, like she was the live-action perfect casting of the female lead in the adaptation of webtoon Cheese in the Trap, it’s like the opposite her. Yumi blends into the world, a woman with a lively emotional and mental life but rather mousy and petite and cute in a non-descript way as created in the webtoon. Kim Go Eun is just an actress that will give you one look and put you in your place. Also, the drama may also piss off new viewers as it doesn’t exactly have a pay off for the romantic entanglements of Yumi during the story proper, Ahn Bo Hyun is one male lead but Jinyoung has just been added as another male lead, both guys Yumi dates in the webtoon.
