C-drama Adaptation of The Golden Hairpin Costing Over $45 Million USD in Production Costs Currently Banned From Airing After Male Lead Wu Yi Fan is Detained on Suspicion of Rape and Drug Distribution

This may be a blessing in disguise in terms of timing, and honestly the sooner Wu Yi Fan is exposed and locked away the better as well. Upcoming C-drama adaptation of The Golden Hairpin (青簪行) based on the novel Recordings in a Hairpin (簪中录) was slated to be one of the most high profile and expensive productions to air this year in 2021. Promos hadn’t yet started when male lead Wu Yi Fan was accused two weeks ago of drugging and raping young women, including minors, and now he’s been detained by the Beijing police on those serious allegations. The Golden Hairpin, however, is faultless other than having cast a likely criminal as the male lead and now the drama has formally been banned from airing as filmed. That leaves female lead Yang Zi, the entire cast, and the production in a lurch, this was supposed to vault her yet again into a new level of popularity with the drama being female centric with a strong character to play. The production reportedly cost over $45 million USD on the low side upward of $80 million USD to produce according to speculation from industry insiders. Any talk of re-filming would require spending more money down the drain and reportedly it’s impossible to re-assemble the cast as the drama finished filming last year. Replacing Wu Yi Fan’s face with a digitally inserted face of another actor brought in to play the male lead will only be absurd as the technology is nowhere near there to make it seamless and believable. This is also the second drama associated with The Golden Hairpin novel to have scandal, the K-drama adaptation with Park Hyung Sik was shelved after it was announced during the scandal with Joseon Exorcist and K-netizens rejected any Chinese products, influence, or works being shown on television.

  1. I have been waiting for Yang Zi comeback drama and this trash of a man ruined another hard work of many people. I don’t have high expectations for idols in general but this particular man went below the standard. You should just rot in jail for all the crimes you commit and I hope your fantards will wake up from their oppar dreamland and open their eyes to see how fckin’ trash you are.

  2. Well, I think this drama is cursed considering this crazy scandal and how Korea probably don’t even want their own adaptation. Pass. I just pity Yang Zi. I was looking forward to her as well. She deserves better, nothing has aired since 2019’s Go Go Squid for her. I hope her projects start airing soon! Yang Zi Drought!

  3. There is no way they can film this again with another male lead? Because the money they wasted is really big… it would not be better re-film with another male lead??

But I don’t pity the pd or sponsors so much because they probably heard his rumors and still considered casting him.His rumors have been going around for some time and I bet the industry heard or knew much more behind the scenes.

  4. The ironic thing is that a bunch of Wu Yifan’s backers invested in this film, hence the tussle over billing order and Yang Zi’s screen time and scenes going to him. Talk about being left holding the bag.

Wu Yifan has been essentially scrubbed from the Chinese internet; not only has he been removed from all the platforms, even his fans’ accounts are getting removed. Pretty incredible to see the Chinese internet flex its power like this. THIS is what true cancellation looks like.

  5. He even oozes they douchey feel even in the last pic above. His family is of money so he always had his way. It’s time to learn his lesson.

Two series of Yang Zhi are rumor to air this year so she’ll be back soon. It’s too bad all the other production staff. I hope they get some pay at least.

    • Watch out… You will have woke people telling you that you cannot judge people by their appearance and lecturing you about the Holocaust. I mean, I do not care what people say. Kris Wu’s face oozes douchey-ness and he has an evil look to his face. Physiognomy is a science…

  6. Sue the guy and use the money to film with another actor. Most of those $$ probably went to the actors anyway, I mean what did they even need the money for, it’s a detective palace drama ffs, not a colossal drama with massive battle scenes or xianxia that needs lots of CGI.

  7. Hoping they re-film & this time they actually follow the novel rather than changing the script for the male lead. C-dramas are just too money orientated. The investors shares have dropped & they deserved what they are getting by not producing a drama properly. I just pity all the cast & crew who worked hard through the pandemic & hot summer, only for this drama to be shelved because of one rapist.

  8. Where is the physical evidence? Is there a rape kit for each victim? Is there a physician’s report detailing violent trauma to the vagina and bruises that are consistent with someone being held down and forced? If they were meeting to discuss being signed that’s business. Where were their agents or managers? Why would you meet to discuss business without either of those? Physical evidence can determine sex occurs but not whether it is consensual. I would expect people to require physical proof with supporting witnesses to prove it is not consensual.
