K-viewers Aghast at KBS Weekend Drama Gentleman and Young Lady with the Male Lead at 27 Meeting Cute with the Female Lead Who is 13 Years Old

I’m sorry but WTF is this? One would not expect newly premiered KBS weekend drama Gentleman and Young Lady to have this type of frankly gross misstep but here we are in 2021 still dealing with really bad set ups. The drama stars Ji Hyun Woo as a widower with three kids who hires a bright young live in nanny played by relatively rookie actress Lee Se Hee in her first starring role, and the two proceed to fall in love as she heals his sad soul from the loss of his wife and also helps raise his three kids. It totally stole from Prime Minister and I but whatev. The MEGA GROSS element which was a surprise and totally unnecessary if you ask me is that the two leads actually met when they were kids, you know the childhood meet cute and fated element that K-romance loves to throw in there. But wait, it’s not kids with a plural but kid because they meet when she is a kid at 13 years old which is 6th grade by the way but he’s a naval officer who is 27 years old, and overall they have a 14-year age difference. Yes, you may step aside to dry heave now. I don’t know why these two characters had to have that prior cross paths other than she grew up crushing on him (I guess) and makes her becoming his kids nanny and his future love interest all the more closely intertwined in that fated way. Thankfully K-netizens (and frankly any netizen viewer) found this set up super uncomfortable and inappropriate when it aired in the premiere episode and this drama is getting raked through the coals. Burn away, netizens, burn away.

  2. I…. want a safe space right now to process all this ick. Nope, nope nope.

Nope. I don’t blame the actors – but the writer should be drug tested. Passing on this. I don’t love bug age gap romances anyways… but the initial meeting is just gross.

  4. I’m so grossed out.

I know I’m revealing my age, but I remember when The Thorn Birds aired the first time in my country that my mom watched it. She tried to have us in bed before the airing. I remember sneaking peaks at the show whenever I could and I was disturbed by what I catched, but couldn’t ask my mom.

Later, as a young adult, I watch the show myself and was very uncomfortable how Pater Ralph treated Meggie and explained ‘stuff’ to her as a child and teenage girl (only to be her lover later!). The show was so hyped even years later as tragic and romantic that I didn’t question it.

Now every time there’s a story of lovers, who have already met as a child/ grown-up combo, I remember that disturbing feelings I have from these Thorn Birds’ scenes. How could I ever thought that show was legit and romantic, when at the same time I was very uncomfortable?

How could anybody in 2021 think it’s a good idea to use a child / grown-up-combo for an OTP?

    Ugh!

  5. I watched it. It was unnecessary for them to meet when she was a kid, but it wasn’t as bad as it sounds IMO. He treated her as a kid. She thought he was cool but that was about it.

  6. I think they thought it would be okay, since just recently there was a daily Kdrama that had the same type of narrative but more gross.
Not only did the they meet when she was a minor and he was an adult, but he was basically her foster father. He raised her all through out grade school to adulthood. It felt like ‘child grooming’ which just nth time wrong.
I mean, they did not end up together because they killed him off with some terminal illness, but man it was just so ewwwww….

PS: KDrama is titled “A Good Supper” and definitely stay away from it.

    • Poor Jae Hee. What a miserable career trajectory, going from starring in a Hong Sisters drama to playing Hyoyoung’s pedophile dad in an MBC daily soap.

      • Yeah, what happened to his career? But come to think of it, there are actually a lot of actors who got known as leads from popular/hit works, and now are relegated to roles once in a while or daily drama. Jae hee, Han Chae Young and Joo hyun Jae just to name a few.

      • I think that some actors don’t overcome the after Military service . i still remember him as lead in a drama with Han Ga hin, with Eugene and Shin sung rok in One mom three dads … the same happened with Jo Hyun Jae ( i liked him very much) , Ryu Jin, Lee Jung Jin,Kim Sang Kyung ,Lee Da Hae,Lee Hyun Jin, Jo Han Sun,…i feel sad for them because they were good .

  7. Man i recognize the child actress it’s minseo from popular youtube channel ODG
i am glad she’s getting more work but i feel bad she got this kind of work

  8. they probably thought it was okay, since an earlier drama, a daily, had the same type of story with the girl being minor and guy being an adult. but that other drama was actually grosser, because the guy actually did raise her and was like a foster dad. Really ‘child grooming’ type of element.
But I guess it had low ratings, so it did not have much hate or debate. plus the audience are probably used to so much makjang given that it was a daily, thus it kinda flew under the radar. and lastly, they did kill off his character.. still so gross….
so drama was “a good supper”, and definitely stay away from it.

    • Poor Jae Hee. What a miserable career trajectory, going from starring in a Hong Sisters drama to playing Hyoyoung’s pedophile dad in an MBC daily soap.

      • His career trajectory always puzzled me. Early in his career, he was in a Kim Ki-duk film and won a blue dragon award and then was in Sassy Girl Chunhyung, which had really high ratings. He was good-looking and could act. He seemed positioned for something bigger than what he has ended up with over the last 15 years.

    • as I understand the anime, violet as one-sided crush/love to her officer who only sees her as the kid,
it’s quite normal as they were in a war and he protected her. But the officer is never shown to like her as a woman

      • throughout the anime, she met and found that different types of love exists in people she helped. How love isn’t honest and it is not just about romantic feeling.

  9. THANK YOU for this article. The “nanny to mummy” story sounded sweet, but now it’s either stalker kid or pedophile groomer or both – HARD PASS! I’m so glad you shared this warning

    • Did you watch? It’s neither. She didn’t even know his name and was not crushing on him. They had a brief run in where he treated her like the kid she was and then left. He is not a pedophile groomer. She’s not a stalker kid.

  10. This is gross and a cap of the highest level, like who the f word thought this would be a good idea. Asian dramas needs to stop this ridiculous age gap romances. I know it happens in the real world but nobody wants to see that on tv, it’s gross and disturbing.

  11. I actually like prime minister and I, it has weird ending but it also a realistic one, they met as an adult with big age gap and the ending feels fitting for the situation

For this drama, it is really is a lot better if they meet as an adult and she isn’t crushing on him because that just perpetuates the notion that how a young girl can like older men until adulthood. Young girl does fancy older men sometimes but that more often isn’t love and they get over it. Like seriously, a 13 years old can have crush of a handsome older men they just meet but not love, not pursuing them with the thought of marriage, they also as easily to forget it after a week because they have no idea what love is

  12. I thought about it before posting.

Does no one in Kdrama ever heard of paedophiles in South Korea? Or find it disturbing that a young teen who should call him adjusshi at her age- and make it ok they meet as adults then lovers?

I mean I’ve read a few marriage announcements now between older actors with younger wives. In fact some started when the girl was before 20.

But its just gross when they think its ok to show this.

Its just eww anyway you look at it. The writer wants the audience to accept a 13 year old growing up another 10 years or more. Meeting the ahjusshi who’s almost 40 by then. With 3 kids. And then think its all love and understanding.

Nah. I went through this scenario just to see if it feela better and doesn’t.

    • I know it seems kind of strange a 23 year old would settle for a guy in his 40s with 3! Kids. I mean in Asian culture what mother would be happy to give away her young daughter to a much older guy with 3 kids? My mother would find this unacceptable. I’m guessing he is rich because if he was poor he would be the worst ‘catch’ ever!

  13. The premise is as old as time. An older rich man, a young poor lady, an employee-employer relationship this time made worse because the employee will live with the employer to tutor his kids. I prefer dramas where the leads are equals. I’m surprised a network decided to make this drama in this day and age, and surprised that a lot of people still find this cute. Oh well.

      • Exactly. Not saying this no longer happens in real life – it does, but the reality is, more often than not, it’ll be a kinda abusive or opportunistic story rather than romantic. Well, a lot of local viewers seem to like it, so to each his/her own I guess.

  14. Saw this comment somewhere and I agree.. All the older girls in the comments having sudden amnesia about how they lusted for some older Hollywood actor back in their early teens. Am also pretty sure that some of you younger ones have had dirty, lusty thoughts for your oppas. Did you all forget that several members of the most popular BG are the same age of this imaginary character? LOL.

And if we are to cancel this one, we better all cancel like 50% of k drmas bcos I know that I have seen this kind storyline many times in different dramas with all your fav oppas

  15. The Koreans remained in the nineteenth-century mentality. Singers and actors who became idols children fall in love and worship them, and the “conservative” parents let them fill their room with posters and pictures. No wonder the suicide rate in this country is among the highest in the world

  16. Did anybody actually watch the part that everybody is so ‘aghast ‘ about? She was running,he was coming from anither direction on a bike, and ran into her.He told her She was refusing to tell hi. Where she lived, due to an altercation with family, and asked that he allow her to play the whack a mole game first(he was trying to give her a ride home because she hurt her leg). I saw comments that said “when they xoomed in to their hands touching,i was sick”, so I watched. I saw the two seconds where she was iritated by him not doing well, and grabbed his hand to help, They did pan over, but NEVER stopped, hesitated, implyed anything! The entire scene qas iver as quickly as it began. Then he took her home, didn’t even give her his name and rode off. She said “mister is cool, why do I feel like I’m gonna meet him again in my life?” She didn’t say ‘ooh,i wanna meet him when Im old enough if u know what i mean’, he didn’t look at her and think” ooh cant wait till I can see her again’. As a matter of fa t in an upcoming scene, his stepmother says “he wasn’t so cold when his wife was alive” i.plying that he was married at 29 when he met the girl. People are always looking for a problem,a cause,a torch to bear, which is great, when there is one! Pediphilia is no joke,it is a discusting act tgat ruins a childs life, something they never recover from. I have a family mem that I care for dearly for and have seen what it did to them. I would NEVER advocate for anything that suggested that. This does NOT! I can’t believe some of the misinformed, judgmental, jumping to conclusion, comments Ive seen and that this is making the rounds on So many sites. Smh

    • Thank you. I probably won’t even keep watching the drama, I usually drop weekenders by Episode 10, but people talking about grooming and pedophilia because of a fairly innocuous scene that they didn’t watch is ridiculous.

  18. Excuse me, have you guys watched that episode? Ms. Koala, have you watched it? I mean, the scene wasnt about pedophilia thing, did i miss something??? While watching it, i was thinking, it was just a man helped a kid. That’s it. No romance involved. Am i wrong?

  19. gross. like an opera soap here in my country.
and a whole nation boycotted that drama, finally netizen in my country can realize that suara hati blabla drama sucks

  20. I really don’t understand why this is garnering such negative criticism. It was just an innocuous scene. In my opinion, the male lead showed no vibes other than treating the female lead as a kid. And the crush on girl’s part wasn’t very unusual either. We’ve all had crushes on adult people in our teen years, its really a part of growing up.

  21. I believe for those keep commenting bad reviews on ep1 are still following the drama. Is how we perceive what we see. There was no love at the beginning but a gentleman trying to get a runaway girl to go home. But we tend not to see that instead the other way round.Even so,ask urself if we have not had any crush or have thoughts being with any idols when u r underage? So does that make us gross?

  22. I hope in other epesodes mr. Lee wil be back her memorie because dandan is so sad. I hate Sara character she pretend a girlfriend of mr. Lee plzzz give more flavor of the story.
