Yoo Yeon Seok and Taeyeon Among Many K-stars Speaking Out and Condemning the Cruel Filming Technique Leading to Death of a Horse During Filming of KBS Sageuk Taejong Lee Bang Won

Accidents happen on filming sets, some more negligent then others due to preparation and careful execution, but the death of a retired race horse last week from filming a falling scene in KBS weekend sageuk Taejong Lee Bang Won was absolutely preventable because the injuries sustained by the horse were from intentional acts to get it to fall. The cruelty and callousness of tying a rope the horse and sending it on a gallop so that when the length pulled taut the horse would trip is beyond the pale. If the horse was a person this would be intentional negligent homicide. A horse falling while running is almost certainly a death sentence and this horse filmed the scene multiple times before dying a week later. Many K-celebs are publicly speaking out including Yoo Yeon Seok and Taeyeon, noted animal lovers, condemning the decision to film this way which likely stemmed from saving money or time. I think cancelling the remainder of the drama is the lesser punishment, the PD and people who approved this scene shoot should face judicial penalties and fines for sure. KBS responded on Monday morning stating that it has not filmed since the controversy broke so it has not filmed for 7-days to day and no word on whether/when filming will resume.

  2. Gong Hyo Jin, Kim Hyo Jin, Ko So-young,Bae Da-hae, all spoke out on Instagram to speak out against this injustice. The video is highly disturbing, so please be careful since its sensitive content. Now, this makes me wonder if there are any practices made on set regarding animals? But knowing Korea doesn’t have actors unions, probably not. They really should’ve more protections set in place for animals, actors, and staff.

  3. I already felt sick watching the video. To now let me know the poor horse was
subjected to this MULTIPLE times? Are you freaking kidding me?

What sort of punishments can the stunt director and PD be subjected to? Is the animal welfare league strong in SK ? I have only seen postings before from people saving cats and dogs. Not horses.

But I feel so bad now for the horse. A horse can be loyal and hardworking. Did the poor horse or was the poor horse goaded to do this again and again? I am so disturbed that I wish I can do something right now to directly comment on it in the South Korean website or petition.

  4. I don’t know much about Korea but in my country there is a recent law that states that circus can’t use animals anymore for the shows . In this drama they should have an expert about animals . Jean jacques annaud a french director did 2 movies about animals ” The bear” and “Wolf totem” and animals were only trained and cared by professionals . So i don’t understand how they could let this happened. A horse is not a stunt man, he can’t speak !

  5. This reminded me of my visit to the hippodrome last year. They told us that race horses have a short competition life and after that, unless they are international champions, their most likely future is to be slaughtered for meat. Because horses are expensive to maintain and the rich people who buy them want to get rid of them when they know they will not win any more races. I was horrified to see that such beautiful and noble animals are used this way. Hope more awareness is raised over the life conditions of these animals and the laws change in order to give them more protection.

  6. This makes me wonder if the people involved have done something similar in other dramas and this is the first time the situation was caught. The apology/explanation was so cavalier too.

  7. Starting with Mr Sunshine, I noticed the horses are very thin in the shows. I am a horse owner and hate to see gaunt horses being used over and over. I think some of the same horses are used in all the dramas. Unethical definitely not consuming enough calories for the
