Popular C-actor Deng Lun Fined $16.6M USD for Tax Evasion by Chinese Authorities, Posts Apology and Cancels All Activities

I know paying taxes is painful, and it’s tempting to under report here and there, and honestly if it was just a little it will probably just slip through the cracks. But the tax evasion cases with celebrities (Chinese and Korean for the bigger part) are in the millions or tens of millions and that’s just wild people think they can get away with it especially after seeing the hammer come down time and again on other stars. In China after the Fan Bing Bing scandal (fine of 800 million Yuan) I would think no one in their right mind would try this but again we have another dumbass going for the medal in stupidity. C-actor Deng Lun (Allen Deng), most famous for Ashes of Love, has been investigated and fined 106 million Yuan ($16.6M USD) in unpaid taxes just from the 2019-2020 tax years in unreported and underreported income. In comparison, Zheng Shuang was fined 299 million Yuan in unpaid taxes in 2021, a top video streamer Viya was fined in 20211.34 billion yuan (whut!!!) in unpaid taxes, and you get the drift. On top of the fine it’s pretty much safe to say the star will be cancelled by C-ent and C-netizens, though Fan Bing Bing is apparently trying to make a comeback though it’s hardly making waves so far. C-netizens are in a furor, angry and upset with him, his SNS accounts have been removed, while some devoted fans are trying to hold onto hope. It will for sure impact his projects he has two dramas scheduled for 2022 release including the high profile Night Wanderer with Ni Ni, and he’s also a star in a murder mystery detective show on TV.

Popular C-actor Deng Lun Fined $16.6M USD for Tax Evasion by Chinese Authorities, Posts Apology and Cancels All Activities — 35 Comments

  1. damn. he had such a bright career ahead of him as one of the top 3 most popular c-actors of the past few years. i liked him more than xiao zhan and yang yang and i think he was the better actor too.

can’t fathom why chinese and korean celebs are stupid enough to evade taxes knowing a clean image is everything in their industries. so dumb. this epeople have to think long-term instead of being overcome by their greed.

also shook by the amount of money chinese celebs are making. no wonder korean stars were heading to china before the hallyu ban in 2016 haha.

    • Deng Lun is soooooooooo much better actor than Xiao Zhan. Thats why I am sad he was cancelled. Not excusing his crime. But if he pay the fine, then it is fine already for me

      • For real. Deng Lan is like 10x better than Xiao Zhan, it’s not even a competition. I’d even say among the liuliangs, he’s the most talented. He even sings well too despite having no background in it. I liked his OST for Begonia Rouge.

      • His fans are like bunch of young girls who acts like gangsters (i’m talking about weibo). All those profanities that came from them are lol eye opening fot me to see

Anyways, the guy isn’t some clean wholesome image like his strong management sold him out to be. Those who follow the fan-circles closely enough will know one or two things about the guy and his bad behaviours. Nothing surprising about this at all. He and his official fanclub (which was managed by himself) were on People’s Daily newspaper a few years back about the whole table full of shaobing (the money they gathered was 60k+ rmb for wrap up party for ‘My Dear Friend) and tons of other things

    • I like all these three actors. But I have to say, in my personal opinion, Xiao Zhan is the best actor, closely followed by Deng Lun. Yang yang’s acting could use some fine tuning, but the man is so handsome. Even if someone thinks Deng Lun’s acting is better, I don’t think we should go as far to say it’s “sooooooo much” better or “10x” better. That either means Deng Lun’s acting is out of this world or Xiao Zhan’s is really terrible, which neither is true. Exceptional acting for me are people like Hu Ge or Mark Zhao. These 3 are still young and have time to hone their skills. I thought Deng Lun had a bright future ahead of him, but this is really going to take a huge toll on his career. The Fan Bingbing incident was in 2018 and his taxes are for 2019 and 2020. He should’ve learnt from her to pay his taxes dutifully. It’s not worth it to ruin your career like this 🙁

      • @ Soph

You said everything I wanted to say. Xiao Zhan is a great actor. I like Deng Lun, but I was shocked that he did that. Sad! Thank you.

  2. oh no. deng lun, why? just why? such a waste of another talent, kuku. see u in a few yrs, hopefully. until then you’ll be missed.

  3. I’m not surprised by the tax evasion, but I am surprised by the amount these Chinese celebrities owe. If they’re getting fined 8-9 figures (USD no less) and can quickly access that much liquidity to pay the fines, then that means they’re earning in the upper-8-to-mid-9 figures.

C-stars are earning more than Hollywood stars at this point. They must be the highest paid celebrities on the planet.

    • ikr tax evasion news among c-celeb never fail to shock me. How much money did they make from drama, movie and ad. Its crazy

  4. Sigh. I was really looking forward to his upcoming drama with Ni Ni. All these anticipated dramas that wind up in limbo. It’s sad that all the countless people who put in the hard work for these dramas have to lose out because of the issues of just one person.

  5. How unfortunate! I really liked him as an actor, and he’s actually talented. Didn’t know he was such a dumbass as to do tax evasion after what happened with Fan Bing Bing. Getting greedy when if he had paid his taxes, he would have a longer career. Good thing he doesn’t have a wife or kids to drag down. Sucks about those involved in his not yet released works. Night wanderer has been highly anticipated

  6. Why Deng Lun why. He’s one of the better C-actors in his generation, and not over-rated like the rest you always hear about. Comes across mature in his interviews also (public persona of these ppl are really not to be trusted). And omg I was anticipating Night Wanderer so much!! UGhh

Secondly, wow these C-celebs really earn so damn much. How on earth are they earning so much of money?? No wonder the gov is clamping down on them.

But I really dislike people who evade taxes – especially rich ones who can definitely afford to pay. He’s really stupid for doing this, especially what went down with other celebs. He can kiss his career goodbye for now. Though I heard he has a restaurant biz in his hometown, so financially it’s still okay for him.

  7. whoa this is pretty big. he gets insane engagement on weibo. he’s probably up there with yangyang, zhu yilong, xiao zhan etc in terms of popularity. what a way to shoot yourself in the ass.

    • Just curious, but what project(s) made Zhu Yi Long popular? I’m not really into C-dramas, but I know YangYang and XZ got big off LoveO2O and The Untamed.

      • I don’t follow zhu Yi long’s career much, but his drama, Guardian, was really popular and got a lot of international fans with the bromance, which was really a disguise for the BL romance in the original novel.

      • The Guardian, The Lost Tomb (as Wu Xie), The Story of Minglan with Zhao LiYing. Those would be the ones that really propelled him to A-list. I’ve liked him in To Dear Myself (plot was boring but he played a different type of character) and The Rebel (loved him there).

He’s a solid actor, zero rumours/scandals, dedicated to his craft, and has a super interesting personality – he’s incredibly introverted yet self-assured.

      • like others have said, the BL drama he did with Bai Yu was hugely popular online and he gained a large fanbase as a result. A lot of the popular young actors got popular off BL like Xiao Zhan, ZYL, Wang Yi Bo, Gong Jun, etc

  8. Wow. I thought for sure that no C-actor/actress would try this again. I was also looking forward to Night Traveler too. Welp.

  9. He is indeed one of the more talented actors in his age group and it’s a pity that his career had to end this way. Night Traveller looked good before this. I’m not sure if this “cancellation” suits celebs better or if they’d have preferred a jail sentence but an opportunity to make a comeback. That said, he has made various remarks which suggested that he wasn’t really into acting, so I’m not sure how much was left in him anyway. It’s curious what led to this though, because the authorities apparently gave multiple warnings and all he had to do was pay up.

      • I’m not sure what were his remarks but I know he opened a chain of hotpot restaurants in China and joined a lot of variety shows lately. If one is truly interested in acting, why take up so many additional jobs? Managing other businesses and going on so many variety shows when you are not promoting your airing dramas.

      • He said something along the lines of “I don’t like acting because it’s too tiring.”

      • @kitai: that’s interesting. wonder what might have triggered that.

@lilith: hmm yes have heard of his hotpot restaurants. imo there is nothing wrong with his actions. plenty of actors after accumulating $ for a few years tend to invest in property, production studios, F&B ventures. most of these things aren’t even run by them, they usually hire a team. there’s nothing wrong with going on varieties as well. it’s a way for actors/actresses to stay on people’s radar in a very competitive industry and also a way for them to gain new fans. as varieties are where people usually think they get a glimpse of the celebs’ “real” (in reality, usually just a fabricated persona) personalities and they endear themselves to these celebs.

    • There was a joke running around that the authorities were reminded about investigating his taxes after seeing his GUCCI ads. (GUCCI partnered with Deng Lun as a model for some ads but his fans went around claiming that Deng Lun is the next GUCCI ambassador and dragged the actual GUCCI ambassadors – Xiao Zhan, Lu Han, Chris Lee and Ni Ni)

  10. DL is one of the most talented and highest paid actor of his generation. He got the looks, talent and liu liang plus great personality. Such a pity he got greedy despite the astronomical amount he earned per work. He got big brand endorsement under his belt too. Damn, greediness….

  11. What the F! These celebrities have thwir own bookkeeper and accountant so how come they can be sued like this? Ohhh, I love Deng Lun. I hope the future will still be good. I am ao devastated with this news.

    • Or how come they can commit like this? Paying taxes aint personal doing since they have their own agencies and specialist handling money matters. Fan Bing Bing issue is different because she had two contracts, one legal is one is hidden just to avoid the super booming tax, but this about DL aint that clear if it is the same way. Ohhh I hope so it ain’t the case,I hope it is just a mistake in the parts of the agency.

      • So there are fictitious businesses to mask his real income. So sad! So sad!
