KBS Mon-Tues Quirky Detective Drama Cafe Minamdang Premieres to 5.7% and 5.6% Ratings for the First Two Episodes

The summer K-drama premieres continue on and this time it’s new KBS Mon-Tues drama Cafe Minamdang dropping to kick off the week. The drama got ratings of 5.7% and 5.6% for its first and second episode ratings, respectively, which is around where predecessor Bloody Heart (Red Single Heart) started off with. I’ve heard good reviews as I haven’t had a chance to start yet but this one probably had the best promos of any K-drama this year so far – colorful, energetic, and creative. It’s like the cast of Seo In Guk, Oh Yeon Seo, Kwak Si Yang, and Kang Mina are totally committed and so is the production staff producing the promos. This bodes well for this drama and hopefully its ratings will increase incrementally with airing if the story is indeed quite entertaining.

  2. Good and bad elements so far. I’ll be brutally honest. The biggest problem is the writer’s over the top moments and PD approving those scenes to be filmed. K-drama writers in general just don’t excel in mixing different elements. If there’s no improvement in the next episodes, I’m petitioning for writer to be fired and bring on My Secret Terrius’s writer and PD.

I don’t have high hopes for the ratings if writer doesn’t eliminate the bad stuff. The good stuff is the Minam squad, sibling interactions, KSY’s butt and someone else’s butt. There’s a main plot that keeps moving, bits and pieces of moments that I laugh out loud. Sighhhhhh.

  3. The show has wacky humor that reminds me of The Fiery Priest and Vincenzo, except even more colorful. The ML & his buddies would fit right in with the Plaza crew.

SIG is perfect as a shaman scam artist šŸ˜‚. I’m enjoying his hijinks.

That being said IDK why but I have a hard time focusing on the story and I keep checking out, which doesn’t bode well.

    • Shades of Stephen Chow’s Kungfu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. I’m even expecting Taxi Driver’s bucktooth female gangster boss and SWDBS gangsters’ teeth flying out.

  4. I have a feeling Hye-joon secretly liking Su-cheol. There was a fleeting moment when she looked at him differently. My girl Mina is crushing it.

  5. Loving the 2 episodes so far. Canā€™t wait for the Cafe team and Police team to start working together. Both teams are funny and have great chemistry , I have fun watching them.
Also glad that the female lead is such a kickass but crazy in her own way.

    • The female lead character is utterly unbelievable… I was tempted to stop watching when they showed her idiotic action scenes.

  6. I like it. It’s very wacky and quirky and I always love a drama that makes me laugh, it’s why I am a big fan of The Fiery Priest. That’s not to say it’s as funny as The Fiery Priest yet but still a long way to go.

I am finding it a bit weird seeing Kwak Si Yang in this kind of role to be honest, I am used to seeing in more serious roles that I can’t shed off that image of him and that’s not his fault (or is it?) but am very fine with the rest and I like me a badass female character.

Can’t get started on SIG, he does no wrong in my eyes šŸ˜„

  7. Loving it so far. Very wacky with mystery involved.
Seo In Guk is killing it as a shaman and Oh Yeon Seo is playing a strong role this time so all good.

  8. Looks like Koreans and Japanese love this kind of wacky humour. It went up to #2 and #3 in their Netflix top ten.

I love it too so far. Hope it doesn’t go off the rails. I haven’t laughed so hard since BP ended.

  9. Oh Yeon Seo just looks so gorgeous in her bad ass cop role. Her photos with SIG in press con and Cosmopolitan shoot are hot. If PD tone down her action scenes it would be perfect.
