Lee Young Ae Wows Judging the Miss Korea Pageant and Prepares to Film Sageuk Drama Saimdang, the Herstory

Famed K-actress Lee Young Ae made a double news splash this week in her usual low key but undeniably classy way. First came news that filming is about to start on her upcoming fully pre-filmed K-drama Saimdang, the Herstory. With this news came two production created posters featuring Lee Young Ae in her costume hanbok playing the titular role of Shin Saimdang, the real life late Joseon era female calligrapher, poet and scholar given the posthumous moniker of Wise Mother. I can’t think of another K-actress better suited to play this renowned person.

The second bit of Lee Young Ae news this week came courtesy of the annual Miss Korea pageant, an event that is easy to write off as dated and sexist but still remains quite followed in Korea as all eyes are on the young lady who will win the pageant and go on to represent Korea in the Miss Universe pageant. It’s like Korea’s fixation on beauty combined with it’s strong patriotic streak mashed together into one intense night of competition. Lee Young Ae was involved in this year’s pageant as a judge and her presence got the K-media and fans talking about how she outshone all the contestants despite being twice their age and showing up in a simple white pants suit.
