Pardon me? Did I read the news story right? The casting has finally been confirmed for the upcoming blockbuster-in-the-making Korean movie Thieves. The first thing going through my mind is – oh hells yeah, Lee Jung Jae and Jeon Ji Hyun are reuniting a decade after they made my heart sing with longing as a pair of time-crossed lovers in Il Mare (which Hollywood remade into The Lake House).
Thieves will be directed by popular director Choi Dong Hoon (Jeonwoochi, Tazza, The Big Swindle), and boasts a cast that the media is calling the most star-studded affair since the Big Three was assembled for The Good, The Bad, The Weird.
In addition to Lee Jung Jae (playing the role of Popeye) and Jeon Ji Hyun (as Anycall), the cast of Thieves will be round out with Kim Yoon Seok (Macau Park), and Kim Hye Soo (as Pepsi), plus some well-known veterans. Thieves centers around a group of professional thieves who attempt a high-stakes heist of a priceless gem “The Sun’s Tears” from a Macau casino vault.
Anycall is a lady thief with the ability to materialize anytime she is summoned, and possess an unknown background and a mysterious allure. Popeye is a thief of few words, and will be involved in a love triangle with Anycall and Pepsi, who is a seasoned thief who was abandoned by her lover Macau Park, and is back for revenge after a prison stint.
Thieves has been called the Korean Ocean’s Eleven (but with more ladies). Thieves is currently scouting locations in Hong Kong and Macau, and is expected to commence filming in May, aiming for release by the end of the year. Just hearing the name Lee Jung Jae perked me up immensely, and if you pair that with Jeon Ji Hyun, Thieves is already my most anticipated Korean film of the year.
