Purported Plot Synopsis for Nice Guy with Moon Chae Won and Song Joong Ki

Nice Guy, which doesn’t premiere until early September thanks to Bridal Mask‘s extension, has nevertheless started filming. Nothing says a drama’s got its shit together better than a two month head start. The production is headed on location to Japan with the main leads all having significant scenes filmed there. Other than the script reading stills released a few weeks nothing, there has been nothing else from KBS to whet our appetites. But the good fans on DC Gall have managed to get a hold of what reads quite believably as the plot set up of this drama.

We’ve been all wondering what the heck happened to turn Song Joong Ki from a real nice guy into a Nice Guy (i.e. guy pretending to be nice, as if the capitalization on the two words didn’t tip us off enough that this was all so Dra.Ma.Tic.). I read the synopsis and felt all at once like (1) I’ve read this before, somewhere a few dramas got mashed together, and (2) it still sounds interesting because ultimately its about the character connections and interpersonal relationships that writer Lee Kyung Hee excels at.

Purported Set-up for Nice Guy:

Kang Ma Roo (Song Joong Ki) and Han Jae Hee (Park Shi Yeon) are lovers. Ma Roo is a third year medical school student, Jae Hee is a reporter. Seo Eun Gi (Moon Chae Won) is a woman with a weak disposition, who faints frequently. One day, Jae Hee kills a middle-aged man in a motel. Ma Roo takes the rap for it and goes to prison. During the time he’s incarcerated, Jae Hae becomes a wealthy woman by being with Chairman Seo (Kim Young Chu), who is Eun Gi’s father. She has a young child with him, but is not married nor have they gone public with their relationship.

Ma Roo gets out of prison 5 years later. He’s so devastatingly charming that no woman could resist him. Jae Hee hates herself for her shady past so she wants to use Chairman Seo to raise her status and give herself a new identity. Eun Gi and Jae Hee intensely dislike each other. Eun Gi works at her father’s company. Ma Roo and Eun Gi meet for the first time on a flight from Japan back to Korea, because she faints during the flight. This is also the first time Ma Roo sees Jae Haa again after he gets out of prison.

My thoughts:

Prison! Nothing like a scapegoat prison stint to turn love sour, eh? I’ve been curious to know what exactly happened between Park Shi Yeon and Song Joong Ki’s characters to turn him into an angry guy hell bent on toying with womankind. So he takes the fall for his ladylove, only to learn that she’s flown the coop during his incarceration and found herself a rich daddy to aid in her social climbing aspirations. Yeap, I’d be pissed, too. Usually martyrdom prison sentences are supposed to be accompanied by vows of forever after and true love. To experience the opposite would believably turn Song Joong Ki jaded and disillusioned with the fairer sex.

I wonder how Moon Chae Won’s character is written, other than sickly with what sounds a lot like narcolepsy. I hope she’s got a steely inner will power to counter-balance her weak constitution. I actually love stories where the guy is all angry and bitter, and the love of a pure and sweet girl weakens his prickly defenses and makes him soften. What? I’m sappy that like. This whole set up already sounds like a giant mess in the making, and does echo shades of Bad Guy, only without the birth secret bit. Or is there going to be one thrown in later for good measure? I’m ready for a melodrama to hit me in the Fall, and Nice Guy sounds like it’s what the good Koala doctor ordered.

  • it's like the continuation of what happens after Big Bang's "Lies" MV... guess love doesn't conquer all :))

    • Hahaha just saw your comment and I wrote the same thing. Exactly when I read the beginning of the story * I'm sorry but I love taa kojitmal* lyrics was in my mind : D

  • Thank you. I have been waiting for Nice Guy,can't wait to watch Song Joong Ki. I like to see his smiling face so it will be a change here, now that he's an angry guy wanting revenge.

  • I was going to watch this drama regardless of plot lol However, I adore the cast (love SJK), so I'm hoping the drama is actually good. The plot doesn't seem like anything new. However, as long as a drama can create a believable world, I'm down. Can't wait to see SJK in his first lead role (the real reason why most people will be tuning in heh)!

  • I've been watching movies from the '30s because I love the banter between the steely antagonist and the 'delicate' heroine. The latter has to rise to the occasion eventually when combating the other....Yeah, I hope there won't be a problem for me with the way Moon Chae Won’s character is written too.

Thanks for the drama news as I'm ready to watch a good melodrama this fall and hope NG fits the bill. :)

  • This is going to hurt.
All of these beautiful people are going to cry and cry and we will, too.

Just imagining SJK playing a cynical, bitter, selfish, bastard playboy, makes everything in my life better. It's gonna be awesome.

But I soooo don't want to see MCW be delicate anymore. Puh - lease! She's kick ass in Arrow, why can't she kick some ass here?

PS Narcoleptic heroine? That's funny. How about we throw in that she snores when she sleeps? That'll be riveting television watching her sleep, snort and drool.

    • I first saw MCW perform in "Arrow" and enjoyed her performance there and loved the movie overall....

      • Prior to her memory loss, Moon Chae Won's character is written as a very tough business woman. She's sick but has a backbone.

    • SJK played a bastard playboy in Penny Pinching Romance and he was great in it! :D As for MCW I'm also hoping she has a badass side that comes out from time to time.

  • Cheers for the plot musings-over.
I too hope Moon Chae-won's character has a steely disposition under all the fainting stuff. I hate that sort of thing in any female character, it not only screams 'puny little weakling' but also 'cop out'. Don't know which is worse.

I don't know... See plot synopses as they appear on paper are very rarely ever a true reflection of the end product [don't need to cite examples, I'm sure we all agree]. Having adored all Lee Kyung-hee's previous works (bar one, maybe two exceptions) I think I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, she'll pull this off. And then with this cast? Yay!

Oh, and it'll be airing on my birthday, 5th Sept. Wheee... Song Joong-ki. *thud*

  • For those who can read Korean.. this is the clearer description of Moon Chae Won's character

Probably Koala can help translate the above description for us?

Moon Chae Won will play this amnesiac woman Seo Eun Gi. Before she lost her memory she was a business woman but after losing her memory she's almost acting like a child.

An official statement by MCW's management is saying that in the drama the viewers will see different layers of her character (Eun Gi). Moon Chae Won took Shim Eun Ha (I think the actress is meant here!) as her role model to prepare for this drama. ... (Last sentence not clear!)
