Sato Takeru Takes a Break From Being Kenshin and Does Romance J-Movie The Liar and His Lover

I’m a casual fan of J-movies which are usually hit and miss for me. I do like their penchant for adapting mangas into movies as well instead of sticking with the longer dorama format. I’ve been keeping an eye out for this movie since it was announced last year but the holiday crush late last year let this one slip by until now. The J-movie The Liar and His Lover starring Sato Takeru and Ohara Sakurako was released last December and did relatively well at the box office. It’s based on the award-winning shoujo manga Kanojo Wa Uso Wo Aishisugiteru カノジョは嘘を愛しすぎてる which translates to The Girl Who Loved Lies. The manga is by famed shoujo manga writer Aoki Kotomi (青木琴美) who I have a mostly hate plus mild fascination with. She totally traumatized me when I stumbled across her first manga awhile back called Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru 僕は妹に恋をする which means I am in Love with My Sister. Yes, you can say I totally threw myself into the fire with that title giving the story away, but in my defense this manga won the Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo manga in 2008 and I seriously thought there was a twist! Like, they are not siblings. To my horror not only did the two leads turn out to be real blood siblings, they are fraternal twins! Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru became a movie with Matsumoto Jun and Eikura Nana, who look nothing alike and the incest was totally toned down there. I was ready to write Aoki off until she redeemed herself with the spin-off manga I Give My First Love to You (僕の初恋をキミに捧ぐ Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu) which has no incest and is actually really lovely and sad and later became a movie with Okada Masaki and Inoue Mao. Anyhoo, I’ve heard good things about The Liar and his Lover, a love story between a 25 year old sound engineer with a band called Crude Play and a 16 year old high school student and aspiring singer. This movie trailer looks so good I’m all excited now. Bonus points for no incest even if there is a lot of lying.

Synopsis:

Set within music field, “Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru” depicts a love story between a 25-year-old sound engineer and 16-year-old high school student Riko, who posessess a gifted voice. 25-year-old sound engineer Aki s a member of popular band Crude Play but right after the band decides to make their major record debut Aki quits the band. But, Aki provides his music to Crude Play under the name of producer Soichiro. Aki begins to date Riko whose father runs a fruit and vegetable shop. Riko doesn’t know about Aki’s background, but she likes to listen to him hum. Riko is in a band herself, with childhood friend Yuichi and Sota. One day she is scouted by producer Soichiro.

    • The movie with subs was really good. It was quite the love story though cheesy in the beginning it becomes rather well sought. I personally love the way it's shot and the music will have you singing along to its beat. I recommend it on a cold autumn night where you can get real cozy (like it was last night when I watched it.)

  • I want to see this movie now. Literally if this was playing somewhere with subs, I would have gotten dressed and started shoveling my car out (16 inches of snow over the last day or so) to get to that theater. I fell in love with Sato Takeru in Kenshin. I cannot help but wonder how small Ohara Sakurako must be for him to be that much taller than she. This looks great. I am getting the tissues ready for when it comes out with subs!

    • LOL, she's indeed teeny tiny. And it's neigh impossible not to fall in love with Sato Takeru after watching him as Kenshin.

      • Yup. I got an amazon.com gift card for Christmas and bought myself a copy of Kenshin. I follow the movie production on Twitter even though I do not no any Japanese. I retweet so one of my students who is studying Japanese can give me the updates. I even have their web site bookmarked!

  • I know it's out of topic (sorry, ockoala)... I'm watching Itazura Na kiss:love in tokyo, and I really like it. I only watch korean dramas, but because of this, I am willing to try other jdramas. Any recommendation? I prefer rom-com, not bloody monday kinda drama.

    • hana yori dango, hana kimi, nobuta wo produce, nodame cantabile, otomen all sweet and good dramas.

And of course rich man poor woman I struck gold when i randomly downloaded it. Still in love with the leads both actors and characters

    • ,would you like to try an oldie? I just marathoned Orange Days over the weekend and I would highly recommend it.

      Or Honey and Clover.

      • yes yes yes. I watched recently Orange days and it was LOVE.

One question though: what happened with cute lead actor? other dramas he worked in??

  • LOLOL! There is a twist to "I'm in love with my little sister" in the manga it revealed that they were not related by blood. That's all I'm saying don't want to ruin anythjng else for others! So Koala no incest :)

    • @Daisy

Not sure if you read the entire manga but the twist is merely they had different dads but were still fraternal twins. I mean, if they came out of their mom in the same womb at the same time there was no doubt they were siblings. Being half-twins or whatever the manga tried to explain in a scientifically impossible way doesn't make them not siblings. So, still totally incest.

      • Yeah.

Japanese shoujo manga went through a crazy incest period in the early 2000s. Between this manga and Tsumi ni Nureta Futari by Kitagawa Miyuki there was more than enough sibling incest to go around.

  • try koizora the series not the movie because the series fleshes out the characters better and has a twist at the end the movie does not have, alsa sato takero is very good in mei chans butler

  • I'm actually reading the manga Kanojo wa Uso wo Aishisugiteru now! I'm big on its artwork but I like it!! I can totally see where its going and some characters are annoying but I'm going to stick with it. I've read Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru as well LOL Man that was some messed up stuff but putting aside the incest it was good... XD Also just because they don't share the same father doesn't mean they ain't siblings!!

  • See...I blocked that manga out...why did you do this? Reminds me of all the incest-y and faux incest ones that were out for no damn reason like that Angel one. I definately didn't watch the movie because I had a "WTF Why did you shoot this Matsujun?" reflex

  • To be more accurate, the manga award was given for that spin off story according to Wikipedia in 2007 (not the incest one) which I will say was really good and had me in tears...
    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shogakukan_Manga_Award

The only saving grace for that author was that spin off from the twincest one and had me start her current one ... Which is ok at least the lead girl is half decent given her age but the other girl (who I forget the name but think it's Mari?) is disgusting

  • Oooh I've read the manga of this film. I actually liked it and now there is a movie about it. So excited hihi ^_^
