Ladies looking for a new makeup trend need look no further than the eye-catching look that is sweeping the Mandarin-speaking countries thank to the popular C-drama The Empress of China. While the heaving bosoms all got left on the editing floor early on during the airing, including many of the sumptuous gowns that was sorta covering them, that left the audience staring at close ups of the leading ladies all the time which has exploded a new makeup fad.
The coronation look sported by Fan Bing Bing is now making waves as stars and ordinary folks alike are getting in on the dramatic makeup of matte red lips, dramatic almond cat eyes, and the Empress red flower mark on the forehead. Is that top photo Chen Qiao En? I only saw her in the nightmarishly execrable FTLY, and would never have recognised her. She really does look GOOD with the crown, unlike almost everyone else.

I can understand the makeup, but I can't understand the thing on the design on the forehead.
It's a popular makeup style in the ancient times. I think legend has it that it originated from some princess from the Song Dynasty. Some plum blossom fell onto on forehead and left a floral mark, which everyone complimented made her even more beautiful. Soon after, a lot of ladies drew floral prints on their foreheads as part of their makeup.
This makeup fad is nothing new really. I seen it in dozens of dramas in the past; especially those imperial ones. The flower on the forehead is supposed to be a lotus; like the god from "journey to the west". In asian history, lotus represents a very important meaning. Well, that's what I was told. Lol
