Chris Wu and Nikki Hsieh Deliver Laughs and Scares in Promoting Horror Movie The Bride

I’m not sure I’ll have the courage the watch upcoming Japanese-Taiwan horror movie The Bride even when it is released on video and I can watch on fast forward. The movie is premiering next week in the muggy days of August during ghost month in Taiwan, armed with scares aplenty along with a side of cinematic sexy. Starring Chris Wu and Nikki Hsieh, this is about as far as both can get to the other side of the spectrum from their last collaboration, the silly but sweet TW-drama King Flower (Substitute Princess).

The Bride is produced by veteran Japanese horror maestro Takashige Ichise who produced the classic The Ring series, but instead of dealing with Japanese horror staples like the long haired ghost girl, the scares comes from Taiwanese scare lore involving vengeful brides and red envelopes. Chris plays a documentary filmmaker who picks up a red envelope on the ground near a haunted mansion and brings an undead bride into his life. Nikki is his poor fiancee who has to fight for her man with a rotting spectre. The official main trailer is out below (with English subs) and actually has just the right amount of scares that even a scardy cat like me can stomach even if I jumped once or twice in my chair.

  • I was scared when the ghosts hid themselves but when they appeared, I thought the makeup was pretty distracting (as in it looks fake), lol. I much prefer the ghost in the ring, less make-up effects but Sadako can still creep me out. Anyways, August is really the month of horror/supernatural dramas/movies.

  • I can't watch the trailer, but I'm cracking up at those pics. :D Must've been fun to film with someone you're comfy with and worked in past project.
