Lee Sung Kyung Transforms into Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo Opposite Nam Joo Hyuk

Sports themed dramas have traditionally under-performed (har har) in ratings but as a genre I still am glad it’s around to further diversify the landscape between sageuks, melos, thrillers, and rom-coms. MBC has lined up Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo for its late fall Wed-Thurs prime time spot, taking over for the delightful and charming Shopping King Louie. I hope it provides the same lighthearted sweetness even if the leading lady is lifting weights for a profession. Lee Sung Kyung plays the titular Kim Bok Joo, weightlifting wunderkind who finds love and a greater life experience after meeting fellow sportsman played by Nam Joo Hyuk. Lee Jae Yoon and Kyung Soo Jin round out the cast but I’m in less for the assembled leads and rather for the screenwriter who also did Oh My Ghost and High School King of Savvy.
