Hit Romance Dorama We Married as a Job with Aragaki Yui and Hoshino Gen Spawns Viral Dance Hit Across Japan

This is one hit where I get why the underlying work is popular but not sure why the ancillary element is making waves. J-dorama Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu (We Married as a Job), adapted from the same name ladies manga, is a bona fide rom-com hit in Japan. Starring Aragaki Yui and Hoshino Gen, the dorama has been doing teens in ratings which is impressive for the usually lower rated romance genre. I guess the housework as a job element does bring in an additional demographic, but the bottom line is that the cute romance has won viewer hearts and so has the ending song weird dance that’s now the performance art du jour.

If the PPAP dance was the easiest thing ever then the Nigeru love dance is so ridiculously complicated and yet people are doing their darndest to learn it and perform in unison. I’m not caught up on the most recent episodes of Nigeru but enjoyed the first few watched, Gakki is absolutely winning when she hits the right role and this is on par with Zenkai Girl but her chemistry with Hoshino Gen is still a step below the amazing synergy she had with Nishikido Ryo. Check out the dance below and then marvel that people are learning the entire thing.

  • Not watching this yet, but maybe in Christmas holidays. :)
Aragaki Yui is awesome. I loved her in Zenkai girl and this year she was also wonderful as Kyoko Okitegami. She and Okada Masaki were super adorbs together, they are the best Japanese tv couple and I hope they do something together soon :D

  • No compliments on Hishino Gen's song, which they are actually dancing TO? Frankly, i liked that more than the dance itself.

  • We've been talking about this show a lot online. There are whole videos of people doing the dance. There is actually a visual poster-lke description of the steps that people are posting to learn the steps.

  • I am currently watching this dorama. Am definitely enjoying it for the plotline but never bothered by the dance routine, so it baffles me that it becomes such a craze in Japan. The one thing I always enjoy about J-dorama is the lightness element which I could barely find in K-dramas. J-doramas never tried to be cool, always embracing the quirkiness which I find very refreshing.

  • This show doesn't seem to have any competitors though. But high teens are still surprising for a rom-com. Is it that good?

  • Gakki's chemistry with Hoshino Gen's is great, but past episode 5 is amazing. I started watching because I love Gakki's acting but I was doubtful about Hoshino Gen cause I really didn't knew him...but his hiramasa is so funny, cute and relatable that I ended up being a fan. I totally recommend it!

    • I actually never cared for Zenkai Girl. Gakki + Hoshino Gen beats Gakki + Nishikido Ryo a million times for me (but Nishikido Ryo generally doesn't work for me, somehow).

I love this drama to pieces, everything about it – the characters (main and supporting), the story line, the relationship, the realism and relatable-ness that it comes with, and the little messages that it pushes (house work is real work!).

  • Currently watching and agonizing over the wait for subs. This show is so addictive. Each episode when the show ends its breaks away to the dance. It's cute but the movements are in no way natural. I would imagine it is hard to learn.

  • I was planning to watch this drama when I heard that Aragaki Yui was in it but still doubted a little because I didn't know the male lead but after reading so many good reviews about it and also how much buzz it has garnered (this is probably the most talked about drama since from 5 to 9 with Yamapi and Satomi) I would definitely give it a try after it has finished airing.
