Descendants of the Sun Highest Rated K-drama Broadcast in Taiwan in 2016 Followed by 4th Airing of The Master’s Sun

I was nearly bored to giving up on TW-dramas this year in 2016, the only one I finished entirely was Love @ Seventeen with Lego Lee and Nikki Hsieh. The depressed ratings for domestic dramas speaks the same for audiences but viewers still want to watch dramas as evidenced by the surge in ratings for K-dramas broadcast in Taiwan television. The highest rated K-drama in Taiwan this year was the same as all across Asia – Descendants of  the Sun brought in viewers and reportedly spurred on an uptick of interest in K-dramas on the island. Funnily enough, the second highest rated drama broadcast in 2016 was an oldie as The Master’s Sun still managed to notch the second highest ratings on its 4th re-broadcast on Taiwanese TV. Rounding out the top three is the Choi Ji Woo goes back to college drama Second Time Twenty Years Old. Check out the full list below.

Most popular K-dramas aired in Taiwan in 2016:

1. Descendants of the Sun
2. The Master’s Sun (4th time airing)
3. Second Time Twenty Years Old
4. Marriage Contract
5. Doctors
6. W: Two Worlds
7. She Was Pretty
8. Please Come Back Ahjusshi
9. Cinderella and Four Knights
10. Oh My Venus

    • I second that. I was going to start some TWdramas on Netflix but when I looked at how many episodes it was(30+), I just couldn't commit... I do think what sells Kdramas so much (partly anyway) is the fact that most of them fall between the 16-24 episodes category, so plots and pacing are reasonably tight.

I'm also suprised that Moon Lovers wasn't on there. I thought it was an international hit? Was it not broadcast there yet?

    • ^TW Dramas have fallen way off, from their hey days of competing with Kdramas. While other Asian countries are stepping up and improving, TW dramas are going backwards.

They are down right boring and draggy, with terrible actors, horribly written female characters, low budget, and poorly executed. It's no surprise why most of the big names have fled to China.

TW dramas cast for looks and the results are evident, in that even local audiences are looking to foreign dramas.

  • All hail the mighty DoTS ^^ No offense to other good dramas tho. Just couldn't help spazzing about it. Heh. Thanks to all crew, staffs, writers, PD, actors and actress, esp Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki, for the forever memorable drama. Love.

  • Who would have thought that starring SHK-SJK in one drama will make the viewer ratings off the charts. It was insane that DOTS reached 38.8% viewer ratings in Korea and peaked at 46% by the minute. Now, I want to see SJK to be paired with Shinhye or Moon Geun Young and SHK to be paired with Kim Soohyun or Lee Junki.

    • How about pairing SJK and Lee Junki?? I'm loving the bromance between GY and LDW in Goblin... and want another bromance drama!

  • I get why master sun is so popular, I loved it so much I watched it more than 4 times. (Coming from someone that watched over 100 dramas) it's not the best out there but so crazily addicting and fresh every time I watch it.

  • It's amazing to see the first Hallyu generation actors/actresses are still the most popular in Taiwan. I would like to see how other countries Kdrama charts came out though.

  • The Masters Sun is one of the few dramas I've rewatched. I notice most of these are romance dramas so no surprise there. I really liked Come Back Mister for the story, but I think Rain might have something to do why it is on this list. Glad to see Korean content still be so popular.

I find T-dramas to be waaaaay too long for the story they want to tell, and I'm someone who feels that the Korean dramas often could be cut by few episodes as well. J-Drama I Married As A Job has managed to be fun and heartfelt in a nice easy 11 episodes.

  • some people hate on dots saying its overrated but it must have done something right for it to be dat big a hit it was in so many countries.usually when shk drama hit big it is really big.aimh, all in,fullhouse, hotelier, guardian angel and dots ,all had more than 36% viewer ratings which is unprecendented in korea among either male or female.

    • She really is a wonder in Dramaland of Korea. A blue chip. She may have flops in one drama (think TWW), but mostly, her name alone guarantees for first spot on the drama race regardless of the rating. Just hope her next film, if she does any, fare better. Song Hye Kyo is love.

      • Worlds Within is her one and only unsuccesful drama in Korea. It flopped because it was a Noh Hee Kyung penned drama. She was a great writer but she doesn't have the charisma to bring viewers in. Even It's Okay its Love came in last in its timeslot despite earning critical reviews and popularity online. The only drama she had with high ratings in public broadcast was That Winter the Wind Blows.
