SBS already has one sageuk disappointment this year with Saimdang: Light’s Diary, it’ll be unfortunate if the next one to premiere also fails to live up to expectations. Saimdang failed to live up to the allure of Hallyu leading lady Lee Young Ae, but the upcoming K-drama remake of My Sassy Girl has to live up to the popularity of the original movie from 16 years ago. Changing the setting from the modern era to Joseon helps deflect straight comparisons, not to mention there’s sufficient time passed from when the original movie was a memorable hit that many current drama viewers won’t be instinctively comparing. With that said, there’s a dated feel to the K-drama as seen in the latest batch of previews, the bickering of leads Oh Yeon Seo and Joo Won tap into that familiar feel of K-drama leads who have a strong hate-love relationship that was so common in early Hallyu dramas. I’m not bothered by it and actually have a weird excitement to see a more throwback bickering OTP romance.
