Pairing up two exceedingly handsome actors in different generational brackets appeals to two different audience demographics, and throw in the story being a remake of a popular US show and what could go wrong. Well, the K-remake of Criminal Minds answers that question with an everything went wrong answer but the upcoming Suits remake has a chance to learn from the mistakes of CM and do theirs right.
The US show is about a whip smart college dropout who ends up an associate at a law firm practicing law fraudulently but winning cases and the trust of the firm’s managing partner. Park Hyung Sik is playing the young fake lawyer role with Jang Dong Gun as the senior partner and mentor. K-audiences loooooove legal shows these days, more so than ever, so if Suits is even decently adapted it ought to succeed especially with two popular male leads at the helm. The drama has been picked up by KBS and is tentatively slated for an April 2018 premiere.

I am so happy to have my puppy Hyung Sik back on my screen again.
But a remake? Why Hyung Sik? Why?
I swear legal drama this year is mindblowing. More so medical drama lol
Entourage was bad because the story doesn't fit Korea. Criminal Mind like was boring like the original for me. But The Good Wife was great ! The casting with Jeon Do Yeon, Yoo Ji Tae and Yoon Kye Sang did well. So why not Suits if the casting is great and the story too.
CM also has great casting in Lee Jun Ki, Moon Chae Won and Sohn Hyun Joo. It's down to writing and execution.
@Kurama..Entourage had good casting in Cho Jin Woong and Park Jung Min.However, aside of the story not being relatable to Korean culture and blatant bad directing. The other foolery was trying to make Seo Kang Joon lead actor a little too soon with this drama, when he is very limited as an actor. Not to mention Ahn So Hee was the acting hole in the drama.
I agree with what you say. Criminal Minds has been the misfire as it is just a killer a week story with very slow evolution of characters. Just not really a good fit for a k-drama. Execution killed Entourage - they should have taken on their own celebrity culture in Korea. I think with a solid writer, it could have been good.
Loved A Good Wife. Suits, with a good writer, could work. Without a good writer, no actor can save it.
Wow, how long has it been since Jang Dong Gun did a drama? I remember him from Gentleman's Dignity and that was like in 2012.
I think with these remakes, the biggest factor is the director and to a lesser extent the writer. At least from what I have seen with Good Wife, Entourage and Criminal Minds. The actors not so much. They can get the best actors who fit the roles and still mess up.A good/strong combo of writer and PD will result in a successful remake like "Good Wife". A weak synergy between script writer/ and especially directing will result in utter disaster like "Entourage" which was clear to see.Direction sucked.Or mediocre with no zing like "Criminal Minds".
So if KBS gets it right by engaging a good scriptwriter and a director who actually know what they are doing instead of being all over the place.Hyung Sik and Jang Do Gun on board.Their both charismatic amd act well. There shouldnt be any serious problems.
Though in my honest opinion, I really wish they will cut it with the hollywood remakes, or just remakes in general, as well as the manhwa adaptations, and go back to producing original scripts. Also cant we take a break from the legal dramas...must the new year with legal dramas when this year has been so full of them.
eeish typo. i mean must we start new year with legal drama when 2017 has been full of them?
I think I would prefer the original with western male actors for spunk..but I understand this is for the asian market where Asian women like their own.
I find jang dong gun voice to be unappealing, but maybe that's just me
Yeah, maybe that's just you. He's very appealing in every possible way to me..
Let this one be the end of K-remake, please don't touch The Mentalist
Dont worry no asian male lead will ever come close to Australian hunk Simon Baker ...Also my country.lol
Lucky you!!! Simon baker is the absolute hunk lol
Few months ago I read that they plan remake mentalist...
i know, that's why i'm praying this one flop so they'll drop the plan lol i'm such a bad person *sigh
I also think that simon baker is the only person who could play mentalist and no other actor could compete with him. In Korea create drama remake takes long so maybe in three years we'll hear about cast e.t.c
About Suits - they only write about two actors. And what about others? I am a big fan of original us version so I am curious who play donna or luis.
Jang gong gun!!!! *screaming*
don't care about the other lead
Few months ago I read that they plan remake mentalist...
This could work. The appeal of Suits is the banter, bromance and the relationships. The cases and them being lawyers is only secondary.
More importany is who is going to play Megan Markle character?
Nah, I am more interested in Donna's and Jessica's actresses.
