D.O. Establishes Himself in the Pantheon of Romantic Young Crown Princes in 100 Days My Prince

I know plenty of drama viewers have been impressed enough with idol-actor D.O. (Do Kyung Soo) since his debut in It’s Okay, That’s Love, myself included. That was four years ago and he really has maintained the high expectations in his first leading man role in currently airing tvN romantic sageuk drama 100 Days My Prince (Husband for 100 Days). What’s even more impressive is that this role of romantic and principled young Crown Prince has two earlier versions that garnered rave reviews and high ratings, namely Kim Soo Hyun in The Moon Embraces the Sun and more recently Park Bo Gum for Moonlight Drawn by Clouds. D.O. certainly joins vaulted company with 100 Days starting off with high ratings on cable and his incarnation of the emotionally devoted and intense arrogant prince really feels fleshed out and solely his own impression without triggering my flashbacks to the other popular incarnations of past. He also looks both regal and derpy in his sageuk garb as needed, but put back in modern wear he’s all cool boy next door in Marie Claire Korea.

  • I bet young D.O. in 2012 never imagined himself as an actor today. Lol. Thanks to the director who first casted him, he is now doing very well and breaks the negative perception towards idol-actor especially as an idol-actor from SM. What we all need is now an album or single from him. I don't know why SM never push him when he has such a unique vocal tone and is their main vocalist. Please SM! Do your work!

    • Idol companies tend to be very short-sighted about which members of their groups they push as actors, usually they only push the 'visual' irrespective of their actual talent.

The 'non-visual' successful idol-actors like D.O., Jung Eunji, etc, tend to have scored acting jobs on their own initiative and not their company's.

  • Personaly, for me he's the weakest point in this drama. I can't help myself to see a rebellious teenager and not a husband material or a prince. He always has the same face or tone of voice. I don't really care about his character when he's the lead... I prefered the scenes between Nam Ji Hyun and her brother or the second lead.

    • Yeah, as much as I like D.O’s acting in other dramas, I second your opinion. He seems pretty one-note/or one expression in this drama. Name Ji Hyun seems to be carrying the weight of emoting, and as usual gets little credit for her acting.

      • I feel like it's such a known fact that Nam Ji Hyun is a good actress, that it's taken for granted sometimes.

Personally, I was so happy when she got Suspicious Partner and finally made it to prime time leading lady status. She gets a lot of love for her acting, and it's well deserved but I wish she got more haha.

  • I'm just so proud of everything Kyungsoo has accomplished! He's improved through every single role with more to come. There's a reason why directors are casting him in their movies. Hopefully they make a 3rd Along With the Gods since it seems like he'll have a much bigger role. Now all I'd like is for a OST on the 100 Days Prince soundtrack!

  • I'm enjoying the drama. I think the test of his acting talent will be more about the second half of the drama when he has to do something beyond looking arrogant and cold. But he's totally doing fine so far.

  • I'm really enjoying this drama, he and Nam Ji Hyun are so good to watch together. His acting is good so far, I think his abilities have been shown in a wide enough range of roles that he'll probably pull off any changes in the second half too.

  • I’m pleasantly surprised at how I’m liking the drama. And it turns out mostly it’s because I’m sold to his wide range of acting and emotions as a reluctant crown-prince turned amnesiac husband. I fondly remembered how I love Kim Soo Hyun in The Moon. I’m not sure if we will ever get to see his playful younger years so I’m hoping to see more of his character development as a commoner falling in love, and connecting more with his friends, considering all the looming angst in store up ahead the drama.
