I believe South Korean movie theaters are open and still following the every other seat blocked out method of social distancing. The summer movie season is over and school is back so we’re going to see more serious and feel good movies now and the first up premiering next week is Pawn (Korean title Collateral). Starring Sung Dong Il, Ha Ji Won, Kim Hee Won (good time this time hahaha, I always need to check), and child actress Park So Yi, the movie is kinda like Miracle in Cell No. 7 with a kid getting raised right by so-called criminals.
Sung Dong Il is a debt collector who is given a small girl by her mother a collateral for her debt, she literally pawns her daughter to delay repayment sheesh what a candidate for worst mom of the year. Instead of being mistreated, the daughter is raised well and grows up to be Ha Ji Won (and Park So Yi is the child version). It doesn’t sound complicated and the satisfaction will be seeing the cute and meaningful interactions between a gruff unwitting guardian dad and his new ward. Aside from the movie, Ha Ji Won sported a Celine black dress from the Fall 2020 collection that feels like a coincidental and fitting homage to RBG on the week of her passing, her supreme court robes with her trademark lace collar.
