It’s awards season in the US and the mother of all film accolades the Oscars (Academy Awards) released its nominations today and one of the big hauls in nods went to Korean-American movie Minari. The movie has garnered universal praise with the only quibble whether it’s a US-language movie or a foreign film. It’s an Korean-American movie for sure, set in the US, and the Korean to America immigrant experience, and the characters speak both Korean and/or English. The Oscars did right by the movie, nominating it for Best Picture unlike the Golden Globes that put in the Best Foreign Film Language category. Last year’s Best Picture winner was, of course, Korean movie Parasite so it’s not new for the Oscars to put fully non-English language films in the Best Picture category. Also congrats to Korean-American actor Steven Yeun for garnering a Best Actor nomination, the first for an Asian-American actor in a Lead category, while veteran Youn Yeo Jung was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and it’s the first acting nomination at the Oscars in any of four acting categories for any Korean actor/actress.
This year 2024 has been a slow year for K-actress Suzy in terms of her…
There are weird casting choices and this one is weird from both the leads itself…
Well this is an interesting pairing, setting aside the age difference at least I can…
I swear I just wrote about Song Joong Ki having his first baby and then…
At the end of the day, the core of any good drama remains the Story,…
If I didn't know this drama was a romance set in space and done K-drama…

Koala, you're really similar to Anthony from Hello! It's Me. Steven *Yuen*? LOL. It will be like *Namgong* Min. Poor them, their parents give them good names, just to be treated like this by some random people.
*Namgoong* Min
It's true that Koala has been misspelling Namgoong Min's name wrong for a long time, and that she makes typos like writing Yuen instead of Yeun. But all you need to do is politely point out a misspelling of someone's name. By insulting her on her own blog, you're also reminiscent of Anthony in that you're behaving like a jerk.
Steven Yeun
Shoutout to Han Ye-ri as well for her Independent Spirit, NYFCO & SAG Awards noms for Minari!
Han Ye-Ri knows to pick her projects. My Unfamiliar Family was one of my favourite drama in 2020.
Me too. I really love it. It deserves to have its accolades. Hope it will be included in any award giving bodies.
This is such awesome news. Another step forward.
Two years in a row! Go Korea in film making! Hong Kong’s Better Days is also nominated for Best International Feature Film as well. Two Asians actors are nominated for best actor category! During a time where Asians are being targeted for hate crimes, this is wonderful news!
Congratulations Minari's cast and staff. I watched the film and it talked about the hard life an immigrant family is undergoing. Such a hard life when you ain't in your own country. Congratulations to granny Youn Yoo Jeong. I really love her acting. From Canola to Salut D Amor to Minati to many of her films. She deserves it. Clap, clap, clap. ???
Congrats to the Minari team! A wonderful and moving film. I do wonder what the odds are of a back to back Best Picture Oscar for a Korean film (ok, Korean-American in this case). But the buzz is there!!!
This isn’t a Korean film though. It’s about a Korean family but it’s an American production through and through.
I found it so very relatable as an Asian kid that also moved to the US south back in the 80's. We didn't farm but I lived in the rural farm community and it brought back so many memories e.g. the church Sundays, playing in the woods/fields, trying to integrate, and identify confusion. It also made me miss my grandmother so much. The film was on point about immigration - most immigrants are just trying to improve their situation in life and do what is best for their family and trying to fit into the new community. They don't deserve to be 'unwelcome' etc.
It’s an American film about a Korean family. I don’t think Korea can lay any claim to this one. In the same way that Slumdog Millionaire is a British film set in India.
You hv a point though. I think Korea nation will be proud of the cast since they are Korean if this American film get an award. So thats it. If it isnt about the film perse, the actors /actresses will be the cause of celebrations of Korea.
