Japan Confirms Remake of Hit jTBC Drama Itaewon Class with Male Lead Takeuchi Ryoma

The buzz around Itaewon Class has died down since it’s ratings hit run last year during the early days of the pandemic, almost like a satisfying revenge balm for the downtrodden soul. It was a big hit in Japan as well and even got a television release there so it’s only logical that J-doramas would want to remake it. It’s now coming and has a premiere date and male lead. J-actor Takeuchi Ryoma will headline with an eye towards a June 2022 release. It will be call Roppongi Class set in that bustling bar and nightclub district in Tokyo and will be adapted from the original source manhwa rather than directly remaking the K-drama version. Sounds great and I’m glad this one actually makes sense to remake with a different setting and cultural twist.

  • I actually think this remake will work perfectly in the Tokyo setting. The drama plotline and aesthetic reminded me of a manga actually.

  • If US/Hollywood tried to do this, netizens would scream and protest, "why? Just learn to use subs!" ??

I don't understand why their people are so opposed of any remakes. And the most hilarous thing is if the producer wanted to adapt East Asian source material and they localised it aka chose caucasian actors, people would scream whitewashing. I want to laugh so hard. ????

    • I think, in general, the US doesn't have as much comfort or respect for subtitled media or foreign media, which irks people when they decide to just remake the thing. I feel like that's been slowly changing. The US is not just caucasian, but so much of our media is caucasian-focused, so I get the outrage. It gets silly when a piece takes place in a racially diverse city and all you see are caucasian actors.

In asian countries, I'm surprised at how they seem to know about celebrities and dramas in other asian countries. In the US, we know little about our Canadian and Mexican stars unless they're working in the US too.

      • No, what I meant is more like Death Note. Why US people expected Netflix to cast Japanese people? It's like they don't want to localise it at all. Which is weird. It would be weird if they used Japanese names but the casts were non East Asian, that I agree is whitewashing just like Avatar or Dragon Ball. But Netflix changed the name right? They localised it, but it seems like US people didn't understand that.

      • Do you have the same view for any British/US dramas that Korean remade/adapted? And how do you view this Japanese adaptation? If you like the original then you should disapprove of this?

  • Could be interesting. Japan will probably tone down on the forced romance. However, Itaewon was such a big success in Japan, I wonder how many people would actually watch the adaptation if the story is almost the same. Also, Takeuchi Ryoma is meh...

  • I hope they will fix the issues of the original one. The Korean drama was really promising but the love story, the villain (the son) and the restaurant were disapointing.
