I’m sorry but WTF is this? One would not expect newly premiered KBS weekend drama Gentleman and Young Lady to have this type of frankly gross misstep but here we are in 2021 still dealing with really bad set ups. The drama stars Ji Hyun Woo as a widower with three kids who hires a bright young live in nanny played by relatively rookie actress Lee Se Hee in her first starring role, and the two proceed to fall in love as she heals his sad soul from the loss of his wife and also helps raise his three kids. It totally stole from Prime Minister and I but whatev. The MEGA GROSS element which was a surprise and totally unnecessary if you ask me is that the two leads actually met when they were kids, you know the childhood meet cute and fated element that K-romance loves to throw in there. But wait, it’s not kids with a plural but kid because they meet when she is a kid at 13 years old which is 6th grade by the way but he’s a naval officer who is 27 years old, and overall they have a 14-year age difference. Yes, you may step aside to dry heave now. I don’t know why these two characters had to have that prior cross paths other than she grew up crushing on him (I guess) and makes her becoming his kids nanny and his future love interest all the more closely intertwined in that fated way. Thankfully K-netizens (and frankly any netizen viewer) found this set up super uncomfortable and inappropriate when it aired in the premiere episode and this drama is getting raked through the coals. Burn away, netizens, burn away.

I…. want a safe space right now to process all this ick. Nope, nope nope.
Nope. I don’t blame the actors - but the writer should be drug tested. Passing on this. I don’t love bug age gap romances anyways… but the initial meeting is just gross.
Wtf ???
I'm so grossed out.
I know I'm revealing my age, but I remember when The Thorn Birds aired the first time in my country that my mom watched it. She tried to have us in bed before the airing. I remember sneaking peaks at the show whenever I could and I was disturbed by what I catched, but couldn't ask my mom.
Later, as a young adult, I watch the show myself and was very uncomfortable how Pater Ralph treated Meggie and explained 'stuff' to her as a child and teenage girl (only to be her lover later!). The show was so hyped even years later as tragic and romantic that I didn't question it.
Now every time there's a story of lovers, who have already met as a child/ grown-up combo, I remember that disturbing feelings I have from these Thorn Birds' scenes. How could I ever thought that show was legit and romantic, when at the same time I was very uncomfortable?
How could anybody in 2021 think it's a good idea to use a child / grown-up-combo for an OTP?
Ugh!
This is a new level of what the actual F??????
I watched it. It was unnecessary for them to meet when she was a kid, but it wasn't as bad as it sounds IMO. He treated her as a kid. She thought he was cool but that was about it.
I think they thought it would be okay, since just recently there was a daily Kdrama that had the same type of narrative but more gross.
Not only did the they meet when she was a minor and he was an adult, but he was basically her foster father. He raised her all through out grade school to adulthood. It felt like 'child grooming' which just nth time wrong.
I mean, they did not end up together because they killed him off with some terminal illness, but man it was just so ewwwww....
PS: KDrama is titled "A Good Supper" and definitely stay away from it.
Poor Jae Hee. What a miserable career trajectory, going from starring in a Hong Sisters drama to playing Hyoyoung's pedophile dad in an MBC daily soap.
Yeah, what happened to his career? But come to think of it, there are actually a lot of actors who got known as leads from popular/hit works, and now are relegated to roles once in a while or daily drama. Jae hee, Han Chae Young and Joo hyun Jae just to name a few.
I think that some actors don't overcome the after Military service . i still remember him as lead in a drama with Han Ga hin, with Eugene and Shin sung rok in One mom three dads ... the same happened with Jo Hyun Jae ( i liked him very much) , Ryu Jin, Lee Jung Jin,Kim Sang Kyung ,Lee Da Hae,Lee Hyun Jin, Jo Han Sun,...i feel sad for them because they were good .
Man i recognize the child actress it's minseo from popular youtube channel ODG
i am glad she's getting more work but i feel bad she got this kind of work
she is in hometown cha cha cha
they probably thought it was okay, since an earlier drama, a daily, had the same type of story with the girl being minor and guy being an adult. but that other drama was actually grosser, because the guy actually did raise her and was like a foster dad. Really 'child grooming' type of element.
But I guess it had low ratings, so it did not have much hate or debate. plus the audience are probably used to so much makjang given that it was a daily, thus it kinda flew under the radar. and lastly, they did kill off his character.. still so gross....
so drama was "a good supper", and definitely stay away from it.
Poor Jae Hee. What a miserable career trajectory, going from starring in a Hong Sisters drama to playing Hyoyoung's pedophile dad in an MBC daily soap.
His career trajectory always puzzled me. Early in his career, he was in a Kim Ki-duk film and won a blue dragon award and then was in Sassy Girl Chunhyung, which had really high ratings. He was good-looking and could act. He seemed positioned for something bigger than what he has ended up with over the last 15 years.
Reminds me of a certain anime... *coughs* Violet Evergarden *coughs*.
as I understand the anime, violet as one-sided crush/love to her officer who only sees her as the kid,
it's quite normal as they were in a war and he protected her. But the officer is never shown to like her as a woman
throughout the anime, she met and found that different types of love exists in people she helped. How love isn't honest and it is not just about romantic feeling.
THANK YOU for this article. The "nanny to mummy" story sounded sweet, but now it's either stalker kid or pedophile groomer or both - HARD PASS! I'm so glad you shared this warning
Did you watch? It's neither. She didn't even know his name and was not crushing on him. They had a brief run in where he treated her like the kid she was and then left. He is not a pedophile groomer. She's not a stalker kid.
