KBS Mon-Tues Youth Sageuk The King’s Affection Wraps Up 20-episode Run with Drama High Ratings of 12.1%

The entirety of the run of The King’s Affection felt unexpected. The promos looked so good, lyrical and gorgeous, but I didn’t love the drama at the outset and the general viewing public didn’t love it either that much so the first four episode ratings were low. But then it started picking up slowly and then steadily until it hit 10%. But it it treaded water there for the subsequent episodes though the ratings didn’t decrease. This Tuesday was the final episode 20 and it ended with the highest ratings for the drama at 12.1%. Good job to the cast and crew and it really did earn all the improvements, accolades, and fan love. You can tell everyone working hard especially female lead Park Eun Bin, even in the early episodes she was hard carrying the drama. Ro Woon I don’t know if he got better as the two episodes I watched after he arrived as the adult male lead was not impressive in the least lol. But I have such a soft spot for him and I’m glad he flexed in doing a sageuk after dipping his toe in the genre for bits of Extraordinary You. This drama also got a huge boost from airing on Netflix, it even made it to the worldwide top 10 watch rank and definitely topped the viewer lists in many Asian countries. Congrats to the cast and crew and thanks for creating a solid youth sageuk that got better instead of getting worse during the run.

  • It was my favourite sageuk of the year. It was clearly a fusion sageuk but at the opposite of the others, I think they didn't change of goal, it was Hwi's journey from the beginning to the end. I really liked how we could see through every step of life until she could finaly be herself.

Park Eun Bin really shined in this role and Rowoon was great as the usual FL :p They had a great chemistry and it was fun to watch their BTS too.

    • I fully agree! It was an unexpected surprise at how much I liked this drama since I was so disappointed this year with many dramas, especially sageuks. PEB was excellent and it is my first time with Rowoon and he was also good. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, such as roller coaster too.

  • It was the biggest positive shock for me this year, sageuk wise. TRS I expected to be good and LOTRS was a huge disappointment, but this one I expected to hate by episode 8, especially because Rowoon and the other idol who played the guard were struggling. I wasn't sold at the beginning but it got more and more interesting as time passed, and the cast started having better chemistry. Thoroughly enjoyed the last 2 episodes. Really happy it did well, as the cast and crew deserve it for a job well done.

  • Didn't think this drama was fantastic but I didn't hate either, it wasn't the best of dramas but it became enjoyable at some point and am glad I stuck with it.. Am especially thrilled for PARK EUN BIN, she deserves every success she's getting and will get from the drama and for RO WOON, I guess he's still learning a lot, I hope he comes good along the line.

Kudos to the production team too.

  • I didn't watch as I dislike the male lead but very happy this was a big success for Park Eun Bin. She has been acting for so long but it's only in the last couple of years she has found her footing in lead adult roles.

The trajectory of the popularity of this drama is fascinating. It's not often a drama starts of with very low ratings but climbs from about halfway it's run the way this one did.

  • Dropped this after the first two eps because it was too makjang in the beginning and the plot aggravated me. Glad I didn't continue. It was really pretty to look at though and the child actress was good.

  • Stuck through with this drama and glad that I did! Putting aside the era it was set it and the cultural restrictions and confines that the female characters has to work within, it’s actually a “feminist” drama. The writers did a good job with all the female characters. Very rare to find a drama, and in a palace setting on top of that, with literally NO evil crazy delusional second/third/fourth female leads. Literally this dram had no bad female character! How refreshing is that!!! That’s one aspect of the drama I liked most. All the female characters are well written.
The FL needless to say is written well, she’s strong, smart, brave and resilient.

The second female lead started out haughty and looks like she might be the evil bitch in the story but the drama unexpectedly developed her character from spoilt rich rude lady to smitten lady who looks like she is pretending to be good to impress the male lead to one who slowly becomes sincere and understanding. And finally mature and sensible to let go of the male lead graciously.

The third female lead who became the Queen is so kind and pure, though rather naive and too perky at times, but always very sincere in her feelings. And even after being deceived, she did not resent the female lead and continue to think of him/her (haha) fondly.

Then we have the loyal and faithful palace lady who serves Hwi unconditionally. The royal grandmother is also a strong female character.

I would love to see more dramas like this where we don’t have to eye roll at ridiculous bitchy second/thirds leads who are evil just because.

This drama was definitely a win for PEB and RO Woon and all involved ??????

  • Sorry but red sleeve got 12.8% rating f8r the 11th episode. Not bad when it is going against some heavy weights
