Alchemy of Souls Episode 5 Gets 5.352% Ratings as Wook’s Training Turns into Equal Parts Comedy and Companionship

When I love a K-drama to bits from the very start, it also imbues me with a stronger sense of anxiety because if the drama takes a turn to dumpsville then it means a lot more to me than if I didn’t care much for the drama to begin with. That’s how I feel each Friday as new episodes of Alchemy of Souls is poised to drop over the weekend. I worry about the Hong Sisters biting off more than they can chew and the drama unable to sustain such massive world building while keeping the emotional connections and beats so very intimate and ordinary. This Saturday’s episode 5 got a decent 5.352% ratings down from last week breaking 6% so it may still in this orbit which is a good spot to be. Clearly viewers are still here to check in and the best they can do is deliver an amazing story to keep people hooked for the subsequent seasons. Episode 5 took Mu Duk and Wook into her old training grounds and into the orbit of super powerful Sorcerer/Teacher Lee who is just weird/cool enough I’m game for whatever role he plays in this greater scheme of things. Seeing the OTP bicker and then just get on with things is like they skipped the whole honeymoon and went straight into old marriage couple and I dig that. The ending to this episode, though, made me swoon, gasp, cheer, and legit hitch my wagon to this couple until the cows come home.

  • ML acting is so brilliant. He has great comedic timing. I can see why Hong Sisters chose him as ML. He has pure talent. Hope he will hit big.

  • Hope this drama will continue to keep it's momentum..all the actors are doing so well with their characters..whether in serious mode or comedic..

  • The 5th was a kinda boring.

Now for the ratings, it's not surprising, there are a lot of shows on Saturday and people can watch it later on Netflix.

  • It reminds me of the classic wuxia stories of Yong Jin, e.g., Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (倚天屠龙记) where Uk is the innocent kid (Zhang Wuji) who serendipitously meets masters like Hong Qigong (Hemp Master Lee) and falls in love with an unorthodox Mongolian princess, Zhao Min (Naksu/Mu-deok). Or like Guo Jing and Huang Rong in the Condor Heroes. The upcoming bratty behaviour of Jin Cho-yeon is like Guo Fu in Return of the Condor Heroes.

So far, I'm enjoying it. Hope the Hong sisters have enough plot and don't jump the shark!

  • Just watched ep 6 and the story gets more interesting. Really loving the characters' chemistry, even the chemistry among older mages. Really hoping we get a tight storyline and story-telling until episode 16 from the Hong sisters, director, cast and crew.

  • I think this kdrama rate higher its amazing story, and great actor and actress Miss Jung So Min , she give her heart to this drama fully, and all the cast ...I hope this kdrama ending happily not sad ...and I think it must have season 2...I rate this kdrama 100% superb and amazing😍😍😍😘😘😘

  • Same here, episode 5/6 were kinda boring..i guess i was expecting for Jang Uk to excel in swordmanship/fighting by this time.. more of action scenes just liked the 1st episode that made me glued to it. Hoping for more exciting / amazing CGIs scenes. Looking forward of Jang Uk's transformation from worthless to most powerful mage! 😊

  • This is not my favorite genre nor are the Hong sisters my favorite writers. That being said, this show is very good. I'm hooked! LOVE both leads! Shout out to Studio Dragon - this studio really knows how to tell a story. The casts, the sets, the cinematography, the OSTs, the fashion, and the pace of story telling all stay interesting and keep the viewer coming back-even if the show/ movie itself is not that great. And I confess, I am crushing hard on Lee Jae Wook.
