Now that filming has wrapped for the high profile Fox Spirit Matchmaker (the Yue Hong chapter) with Yang Mi and Gong Jun, it’s time to over/under whether this drama will air in 2023 or somehow drag until 2024 to premiere. One never knows these days with SARFT regulations and permitting black holes. The drama released new filming wrap pictures of the entire main cast in costume so it’s nice to see what some of the looks will be. Super colorful for sure, a lot of layers, and also very striking makeup rather than softer looks. It’s clearly a huge production based on the BTS filming video also just released, check it out and see if it further piques your interest as it did mine.

I feel sorry for Gong Jun here, this could have been a big thing for him but Yang Mi and her one facial expression isn't going to cut it.
He'll be fine. Even if she only has one facial expression, she seems to either have a knack for picking popular costume dramas or she has a strong enough draw to bring in the audience. Everybody loved Mark Chao in Ten Miles, and he obviously outacted her by more than ten miles.
Not any more she doesn't. You can see her current flop, it's doing terribly. This has been her trend lately. This thing has an in built audience though so that might push it into decent success territory, regardless of her fading appeal.
So sad about Yang Mi being his leading lady too, not that Gong Jun's done anything spectacular with his leading ladies before. Lol. The more I watch his stuff, learn his style, and understand Chinese entertainment (and how limiting it can be), the more I recognize that most productions cast him for his stunning good looks to act out male characters that are so stereotypical and bland that he fails to do anything with them because his talent is outside of those characters and their storylines.
I don't think he necessarily acts better with guys (like in Word of Honor) because he is less nervous around guys--his scenes with the ladies of WOH (Tragicomic Ghost especially, Glamorous Ghost, and Ah Xiang) were really strong, compelling, and moving, but a project like WOH that's actually well written with dynamic characters and depth pushed him to go the distance, and everything else he's been in has been so mid and low, he's severely underperformed in those shallow, pretty roles. Lol. I want to see him play someone scruffy and imperfect!
The absolutely worst thing about his projects is that they DON'T use his VOICE, or voices that actually match him (besides WOH). Sigh. I wish he'd commit to line reading at a high level to elevate himself as an actor.
Otherwise, just pair him with leading ladies I actually like! Haha.
I agree @Laura I feel GJ's career is not gonna move an inch with this project with YM. Despite the big name, she really offers nothing. Even her photos, I dread to see. You can't even call her smile or other expressions fake. They're just dead. Dreadful acting. I feel sorry for GJ.
Did you see the trailer for that Xu Kai drama with her? There was a scene where he lifts her on top of a table (or some surface) and it's obviously meant to be a heated moment and her face is dead. There is just no expression. This won't be better.
This drama is touted to be the biggest hit next year. I wanna watch this. IQIYI dramas has much more depth than the other two platforms.
Immortal Samsara was hyped to be the king of dramas this year. How did that go again?
For Youku, it was one of the kings this year & it earned loads of advertising which I’m sure you agree :)
Except no it didn't and it was a total flop. At some point you will learn what faked stats are. Youku is especially famous for producing them, though these days all platforms are working hard. That was a mega expensive drama that didn't make a return and tanked, hard.
