tvN Fantasy Romance See You in My 19th Life Averaging 5% Ratings Through Episode 6 as the Story Continues to be Carried by Shin Hye Sun’s Stellar Acting

I wanted See You in My 19th Life to be better than it is but what it is remains worth watching. The Sat-Sun drama is now through episode 6 and the ratings are high 4% on Saturdays and low 5% on Sundays consistently. But the story feels like it’s stuck in Shin Hye Sun‘s characters 18th life and she’s not even living her current 19th life with everything being helping Seo Ha and even reuniting with her younger sister. The worst part is the leads have zero romantic chemistry and both stars have generated chemistry with other costars so they are capable of it just not here with each other. Shin Hye Sun is carrying the show with her acting and also her loving chemistry with all her other female costars including her niece from the 17th life and her little sis in the 18th life. I think her accidental murdered death in her 18th life is causing cascading complications which I am interested in seeing unravel but for the end romance it’s the least engaging aspect of this drama.

  • The 2nd leads chemistry and romance is more natural.

It's hard to root for the main otp because Ji Eum is not Ju Won in the current life and even if Seoha falls in love with Ji Eum, is he in love with her as Ji Eum or still in love with the shadow of Ju Won?
I also find Ji Eum pursuit of Seoha quite forced.

It would have been better is both Ji Eum and Seoha are reincarnation of their previous lives and met in current life instead.

  • There are undoubtedly very interesting and thought-provoking parts of the story mostly pertaining to FL's past lives, like how trying to claim your previous lives' identity may break the laws of the natural order, and whether reincarnation would bring more suffering than good to everyone involved. I actually like that the show focuses on the 17-19th lives while including snippets of the other lives as it's become clear that it's these emotional aspects of the show that they are trying to focus on. I'm also starting to get curious about her 1st life and the mystery behind her reincarnations (NOT the murder mystery).

But my biggest gripe is honestly... that both of the men are so uninteresting and unresponsive, especially ABH. I don't get what's so attractive about their characters that make the sisters so smitten with them. I think that's what's killing the chemistry. I can't tell if it's on the acting or the directing, but I always thought ABH was a decent actor in other works. The show is actually following the webtoon quite faithfully (apart from adding some subplots), but some things just don't translate quite well to the screen since it's harder to suspend your belief when watching actual people. The grounds for the romance isn't really convincing enough. Also whoever was in charge of the BGMs has really weird taste. I was doubting my ears when I heard some clown music in odd places and that nearly ruined a few scenes.

But I will be continuing for the mystery, the sisters and uncle-niece relationship, and obviously just for SHS. She excels in all the emotional scenes and Chowon's actress is good as well.

    • I agree! Like, what is their appeal? Even in webtoon I didn't quite understand it. Seoha is so blandddd

  • This is good please, I don't know which drama koala is watching. I normally agree with koala or at the very least understand her point but nah here. Please check this out if you haven't, if you like it you like it but if you don't you don't but it's a good show. Don't let ratings and koala keep you from checking this out.

  • The drama isn't bad but i find that Shin Hye Sun is not delivering a good performance . There is something off . She was so good in Queen Cheorin . No chemistry between the leads , they are more like siblings . A pair of good looking actors don't always make a good couple .

  • The chemistry is barely there, the fans are fine because they are fans but when you aren't fan of both, we all know the main lead has no chemistry together, the second lead has more chemistry despite being underdeveloped

  • Still watching it veeeery casually...the story seems intriguing...the romance, meh...I don't know the main actor and he is not impressing me but I've always liked watching Shin Hye Sun. I get my cute romance from KTL anyway. It's nice that they're tonally different dramas.
