My Dearest Extended to 21-episodes with Strong Run Despite Recent News Reports of Overworked and Underpaid Staff

The MBC weekend old school sageuk romance drama My Dearest has been worthy of its prestige roots and shining through the extraordinary acting of leads Namgoong Min and Ahn Eun Jin. I’ve put this drama on my binge watch list due to being addicted to other dramas during both periods of its split run and now Part 2 is winding down with news that MBC will add one additional episode. This drama is live filming so will end with episode 21 but the news of the extension comes on the heels of an expose that the crew has been struggling with insane work schedules basically 22 hours a day with only 2 hours sleep due to the many night scenes and also now with the added episode it will only exacerbate the situation. Pre-filming K-dramas did alleviate the horror stories that I heard about during the live filming days but sadly any time there is a live filmed drama this stuff always happens.

  • gosh the production team is too greedy and ready to jeopardise their staff well being for one second of fame.

  • I checked this drama a while ago for Namgoong Min. I'm not quite sure about Ahn Eun Jin though. I don't think I like her acting style. So I dropped the series after 2 eps.

    • It's really good! Pls overlook female lead's acting in the first couple of episodes. She and male lead are great actors.

      • Someone commented that the plot was based upon American classic Gone with the Wind. No wonder the storylines look similar. Now I see that AEJ was imitating Vivien Leigh. Leigh was legendary as Scarlett O'Hara as if walking out of the novel that I read a couple of times at teenage. It's actually odd to see another actress trying to reprise her role. Also transferring American Civil War setting to Korean period was kind of out of place. Gone with the Wind is not only about the heroine's love story, it's also about the American history, culture, and societal conflicts in that time, craftily written in local American accents. That made the novel one of the best American classics. That may be the reason why this Kdrama including the whole setting and AEJ's character appear so awkward to me. It's just not very Korean, like pouring Chardonnay out of an Asian tea pot.

That being said, perhaps My Dearest appears fresh to many Kdrama fans if they have never read Gone with the Wind or watch the American series of the book adaptation.

      • Yes, the show is based on gwtw and the influence is very obvious early on, but as the story progresses it becomes more grounded in Korean history and the movie's influence pretty much disappears. I also far prefer AEJ's Gilchae to Vivien's Scarlett. Gilchae's character development is one of the best I've seen, whereas Scarlett was annoying throughout.

      • @Yoru, AEJ's acting style isn't up my street given that she obviously copied Vivien Leigh who did an amazing job as Scarlett O'Hara but AEJ appeared overacting. While Vivien Leigh was a stunning beauty, AEJ appears pretty bland to me even she was described as very beautiful. I just didn't see that in this drama. LOL. I don't think I'll check her drama again. The Korean version of somehow reprised Scarlett O'Hara was a failure in my eyes. Sorry no offense. That's my personal assessment per my own preference.

  • The extension wasn't necessary. The second part is already weak. I'm not interested in the love story because they spent 17 episodes to hurt and lie to each other. The characters are more interesting when they're separated. The fact they based the story on Gone with the Wind wasn't the best choice because I don't like the movie.

    • I see, based the story on Gone with the Wind. No wonder the plot looked soooooo familiar. AEJ looked a bit overacting.

  • Classic example of great drama only benefits the actors, directors and scriptwriter, while the staff gets overworked. Welp hope at least they give vacation reward to the staff since this drama is doing well

  • It's a shame about the staff and also overall about the second half of this show because the first part was extremely engaging. Part 2 started off promising but got repetitive a few episodes in. The writer introduced some of the most cliché tropes and old school one dimensional characters like Gakhwa. The show is mostly being carried by NGM's phenomenal performance and great chemistry with AEJ. AEJ herself has improved vastly over the course of the show and has quickly climbed up my list of actresses whose work I'll look out for. But with only 2 episodes left, I'm not sure how they'll wrap it all up satisfactorily.
The drama itself was mismanaged by MBC. It was well on its way to higher ratings and could've crossed 20 percent had it not been split into 2 parts and aired weeks apart with episodes getting delayed. And it should've been 16 episodes like TRS was originally, not 20. I have a feeling the actors also signed on for the show based on the part 1 script bcs the writing for part 2 doesn't even seem like the same show at times.... Still, I hope the ending is good because the main duo have become one of my favorite kdrama couples oat.
