So even K-netizens are little taken aback at this week’s early domestic reviews for this Friday’s premiere of period supernatural action drama Gyeongseong Creature on Netflix. The drama is tent-poling for Netflix the holiday season just like The Glory did last year which turned out to be an even bigger hit than already anticipated of the top cast and famed screenwriter, and has a massive budget so there is a lot of expectation riding on it. It looked sleek and cool from the previews and promos, but the early reviews just came out from the domestic South Korean entertainment writers skewing negative, and one article is especially brutal saying the drama is a big investment with nothing substantive to show for it – no taste, no color, no enjoyment. Ouch. Normally K-netizens are snarky and love takedowns but this time the comments are a little concerned for the drama to not yet be released and already having such public criticism from K-ent. This Friday we’ll all see if the domestic reviews are accurate or unnecessarily harsh.

Hrm...international reviews of the show are good so far. This might turn out to be a case like Squid Game where the domestic reception was poor but got drowned out by positive international reception.
yes, i think so, maybe its like squid game case
Honesty, I want this project to be successful simply because I want Netflix and other platforms to continue supporting Asian contents.
Ya...me too. Apple have stopped investing in Skorea. I hope the others will continue.
I went to read the reviews out of curiosity, and some of them actually flat out criticized the plot development and acting of the main leads. Meanwhile SCMP praised the show and the leads, and SCMP usually doesn't shy away from giving harsh criticism (they gave Sweet Home 2 and The Silent Sea failing ratings). It might be a difference in standards since koreans tend to be quite stringent on the acting and political undertones in historical dramas. I think there's a guaranteed audience for monster shows and I don't think it will fail like SH2, but it's concerning. Netflix originals apart from The Glory have been underperforming and if this one does too, I fear they might start cutting down on blockbuster korean productions.
Everyone is usually more critical of dramas from their own country because you actually understand the language without subtitles and can judge their dialogue ability, accent, tone unlike foreigners. Like the main C-actors famous outside China are Rosy Zhao, Dylan Wang, Bai Lu, Wang Yibo etc and they're alway criticised for sounding ditzy, or failing to enunciate Hanyu Pinyin properly but their visuals are popular with foreigners. Same goes for Kdramas, i remember Jung Hoyeon got panned for her North Korean accent by Koreans but won awards in USA for Squid Game too lol, foreigners can't judge it well
well, since dr romantic 3 is such an underwhelming and fall short compare to the amazing trailer. I won't be surprise if it's turn out to be true. The writers need to vacation in a while before write so many project in short time.
@Guest
This is exactly it! But people will continue to pretend that Koreans have higher standards than everybody else regardless. LOL.
Netflix has way too many original and licensed Kdramas and none of them feel all that special anymore. It's interesting that Japanese entertainment is actually having more of a moment right now and they are more than a match for Koreans pop culture wise.
Maybe Netflix needs to stop recycling k-monsters for a while.
I'm curious because of the era, the costumes look great.
For the rest, we will see.
One of my favourite Korean actor is leading this...I really hope this drama will do well...domestic/ internationally...
Looking forward to it.
I'll have to watch the film myself to get a verdict. I don't believe pro critics are better than ordinary viewers in critiquing films just cos the former are doing that for a living. LOL. Fantasy is my cup of tea among all the genres. I'm looking forward to this new series.
Binged it. Ff 80% of it. Story is bland, gore aplenty, non riveting, boring with the predictable crucifiying of the villainous Japanese war plot. The show has nothing going for it. Shocking that commissioned a season 2. Did they even watch it? Han so hee and park seo joon have terrible chemistry. Its one of the worst dramas I have seen this year *facepalm*
So negative. Almost like you went in wanting to hate the show if you truly did watch it. Also show is split in two parts, so not two seasons.
Watch it for yourself! And see if you can find the positives. I was one of the early few anticipating this drama from the start as its from my favourite writer. Watched it to prove the critics wrong. But they are 100% spot on. Its terrible. https://www.soompi.com/article/1605276wpp/bae-hyun-sung-confirmed-to-star-in-park-seo-joon-and-han-so-hees-drama-gyeongseong-creature-season-2
This is spot on... boring AF and I rolled my eyes throughout the Han So Hee-Park Seo Joon fight in the first episode as if he wouldn't have knocked her out with 1 punch in about 5 seconds.
