Wuxia C-drama Tales of Dark River Confirms Gong Jun and Chang Hua Sen as Male Leads But Still Cannot Sign a Female Lead

So this is a high profile IP project for the C-drama Tales of Dark River adapted from the same name novel and anime. It’s a wuxia and assassin tale with a strong male lead character and will be starring Gong Jun in the lead role. Now the second male lead is confirmed as fast rising young fresh faced Chang Hua Sen who needs to deliver way more than his lovelorn puppy one-note performance in A Journey to Love for me to get behind his suddenly being everywhere. But the issue with this drama now is that it’s having a hard time finding a female lead who will take second billing to Gong Jun and that the production wants. The first isn’t popular enough and the latter doesn’t want to take it. The most recent name attached was Zhang Yu Xi and that won’t happen either, especially after Gong Jun’s fandom attacked her for not being popular/pretty enough for this role and her side actually issued a legal warning letter to stop the online bullying. I’m popcorn watching back here to see which actress ends up in the project.

  • Any female lead ends up with Gong Jing is cursed, his fans are so toxic, no actress are good enough for him

  • Popularity and looks are fleeting, how about those bias learn to be nice and because he still searching for a hit that he leads.

  • I'd rather watch Chang Hua Sen than Gong Jun, but I'd rather watch something else other than this drama.

  • This might actually suit him because he played his “Word of Honor” vengeful, ruthless ghost clan leader well. But he either needs to learn good line delivery, or they gotta get THE most suitable dubber for him. Haha. If the story doesn’t hyper fixate on love, he might actually fend okay, but honestly, this is going to be THAT project for him that would, once and for all, seal him in as a flop if he can’t deliver.

  • He is not a good actor. His one hit was woh with zzh who is a good actor. So why would any even decent actress agree to star with him when he has a line of flops, no skills and on top of that, she will be subjected to attacks. I am sure though they will find someone. Really young ones, even if good, especially with no backing have little choice.

  • If CHS suddenly popped up everywhere after A Journey to Love, same goes to Liu Yu Ning who's also almost everywhere after his all-over-the-top performance reeked of smarmy caregiver love in the same drama. LOL. LYN needs to deliver more to convince me he's a real ML material too.

GJ may prove himself just a one-time fluke thanks to inconsistent performance in his leading roles. His costar in Word of Honor is a way more talented actor than he is. I watched many scenes of these two together in WoH and could tell that. Unfortunately his costar stepped onto a redline mine (either unwittingly or just being set up by schemers who knows!). GJ had better just bet on variety shows to sustain his popularity. I don't see him make any progress in acting so far.

  • I am looking forward to this drama. Whoever is the FL does not really matter. People are going to say whatever they want anyways... C-drama is pumping out dramas left right & centre. The more the merrier. GJ still has a market. Why not? You do not need to watch if you don't like it. Actors still need work.

  • He is not a great actor but he does look suitable for period costume. We know his looks fits the Mainland aesthetic of a Chinese Scholar.

  • I think novel fans attacked her as well because female lead is supposed to be "cute and lively" while Zhang Yuxi has a cold and mature vibe. One of the funniest reasons Gong Jun's fans gave though, was that Zhang Yuxi look like him lol. But in any case, I agree with the above commentator that it doesn't matter who the FL is as long as the script is as good as Blood of Youth.

  • Whoever says GJ acting is bad is nothing but a hater.. are u blind? He has improved a lot in his recent projects ( Rising with the wind and Dream Garden)
