Queen of Tears Passes 14% Ratings in Episode 6 as the OTP Action Takes a Return Trip to Germany with More Reveals

So the trajectory of tvN drama Queen of Tears remains on pace to join the network’s pantheon of top 10 K-dramas of all time, and maybe even higher on the list than that. It helps that the two leads excellent acting and chemistry is coupled with a broader storyline about her health and also the quartet of sneaky villains that have embedded themselves into the Queens family all waiting to take the entire clan down. Grandpa’s Camilla is clearly sociopath Eun Sung’s mom, the ahjumma lackey is just there for her own gain, and perhaps the only one who may turn to the good side before the end is faker sister-in-law Da Hye. Too bad Hyun Woo is too busy trying to take care of Hae In and also hide his near divorce filing to pay more than a cursory attention to the baddies who are running amok in Korean while the OTP is off to Germany fo a walk down memory lane and a potential hail mary brain treatment. I hated seeing the conflicted that ended episode 6 but know it’s better for that to be out in the open so these two can keep moving forward.

  • Agree, I am glad that the divorce angle is already out in the open this early, so the consequences be dealt with now so our OTP can move on and resolve their feelings for each other. I just hope KSH controversy doesn't drag this drama down. If it has to happen, please after this drama is over.

    • If Park Min-young's issue didn't affect Marry My Husband, there's no chance Kim Sae-ron's little stint is going to do anything unless something much bigger will come out. The ratings here are from Sunday, the day after this "controversy" (I have yet to figure out how that photo is cause for controvesy) came out.

  • The drama is already #13 in the highest tvN rated episode drama of all time and #21 amongst cable. I’m ok with how they ended episode 6. I didn’t want the divorce issue to drag another couple of episodes and there’s a lot more story to tell. Hope the good guys get some headway next week. Would also love to see where each Hong member stands in terms of their trust in Hyun Woo. Dad will likely be on his side.

    • I feel like still a bit missing, maybe because we haven't seen much sweet moments yet. But I feel KJW is overshadowing KSH as you can see the subtle expressions in her acting. Of course KSH is great but KJW is really a good actress IMO trumping most of her peers.

      • I feel like still missing a bit - your ability to properly stir the pot. It’s missed it’s mark pathetically so try harder (:

      • I get what you mean... but hope to have more intense chemistry once they start giving out sugar. Haha.

      • Both are both so so good, KSH can convey so many layers of emotions with his eyes. His eyes can shift from sadness, guilt, to sorry all with 2 mins.

      • Maybe it would have been nice if they were actually dating, like in Cloy for the chemistry to really intensify. :D

  • The cinematography of this drama is otherworldly. I’ve been to Germany multiple times but it feels like looking at it from a different lens. And ofc the leads are killing it. KSH always manages to make his female lead characters look like the absolute world to him. He always looks so in LOVE. The way HW hugged HI when they got back together and the absolute devotion to her. Urghhh so cute. But the last scene in 6 is just too heartbreaking. Not after they legit just got back together too. HW’s trembling lips and the way he can’t meet HI’s eyes. So much guilt. Next week may be brutal fml.

    • Angry Hyun Woo can open up his own fandom. tvN would like first dibs since they seem to be the biggest fans hahaha. They posted a 10min loop of KSH on a bike last week. It was hilarious and obviously very very popular.

      • @Lily - omg sorry. I was meaning to respond to the comment below you.

But agreed with your whole comment ^^ haven’t been to Germany yet, but it’s quickly shooting up to the top of my list!

      • angry worried Baek Hyun-woo is too attractive lol petition to tvN for another bike throw please!!

  • The leads have such ✨ chemistry ✨ omg. And KSH’s English is so good. I dont think I ever heard him speak English. He carries off intelligent lawyer husband as well as cute drunk husband 😂 This is honestly an amazing role to showcase his acting depth. And next week he is yelling really really loud in the trailer and I cant wait to see angry Hyunwoo back. The best version of Hyunwoo is angry (case in point: bike shove scene)

    • honestly I don't judge English (or any foreign language) speaking skills in kdramas at all, even Hollywood movies mess up foreign languages really badly. The leads do their best and it serves the plot, that's enough for me.

the more important thing for me is KSH and KJW chemistry and acting skills are incredible, KSH hasn't had an onscreen match this good since Jun Jihyun in YFAS. They're truly amazing together, they were each great actors before this but together it's like pouring fuel on flames they just make each other even better.

      • I saw a few comments lamenting lack of chemistry but that was followed with saying he only had chemistry with syj onscreen and offscreen. I feel like chemistry is so subjective though, I'm still yet to watch this cause I'm not into pje drama's, but I'm soo curious on the hype and I genuinely think jiwon has chemistry with everybody, I'm still stuck on hers and sukku's

      • @Alyza - yeah as actors, both of them don't miss when it comes to chemistry with their costars and evern creating different types of chemistry depending on the characters. KJW has been fantastic with everyone I've seen her paired with onscreen, even in Heirs where they didn't make her and Kim Woobin a couple in the end lol.

(sole exception is Moon/Sun because Han Ga-in had basically one wide-eyed expression through the whole drama, can't blame KSH though, he tried his best)

  • Absolutely...very different (in a good way) from My Demon and Dr Slump. Here, the director, scriptwriter and cast are experienced and their past works speak for it here.

  • this is probably the most solid drama i've seen in quite some time (probably since Reborn Rich - King the Land, Marry My Husband, Tell Me You Love Me, Park's Marriage Contract were good but not quite great). KSH is delivering his top notch acting as always, but KJW is the one that blew me away - they really gave her all the deep, heartfelt scenes, when she portrayed her actual feelings behind the haughty mask. I used to think she was more suited for fun youthful drama like DOTS, Fight for My Way, Arthdal Chron, the Heirs (I gave her last outing Liberation Notes because of that) - how wrong I have been!

    • Also I feel like she is not worried about needing to look pretty. In Liberation Notes they made her look really plain but her acting was good for me. And her roles are varied, so she's more versatile than other actresses.

      • @Yeme - yeah KJW is beautiful of course, but I like that her approach to characters is to really get their emotions right. Hong Haein is the kind of character who in a kdrama, is usually male so it's an interesting reversal to have the male partner be the more emotional one here while she's the one with the chilly facade (but not without feelings, as the drama makes it plain she clearly feels and shows love, heartbreak and trust the ending of episode 6 was so sad to watch)

I know the female lead role was offered to IU first and she's good at acting plus she/KSH would have had great chemistry but KJW really made this role her own, I can't see anyone else playing Hong Haein.

      • @Royal We - knowing what we know about Hong Haein now, I think IU would have been extremely miscast. I'm so grateful that Kim Jiwon got the opportunity to bring this complex character to life. Anyone else playing this role is unimaginable.

      • @mimimi - I like IU but I can only see her in this drama if the whole character was drastically different from the one we're seeing Kim Jiwon play. In fact the gap of 7 months between IU declining the casting offer and KJW casting, makes me think perhaps Park Jieun did rewrite the role in some way, she certainly had time to do it.

But you're right that the level of skill and subtlety that Kim Jiwon brings to the part makes it absolutely unimaginable to picture anyone else playing Hong Haein. Especially in episodes 5 and 6, no wonder she's taken no. 1 on the most buzzworthy actors list this week (ahead of Kim Soohyun, who's been on top since QOT started airing). She's incredible.

  • I watch it only the couple, both actors are great and have so much chemistry. I love how the characters love each other and how their POV are filmed.

  • I feel the momentum is sometimes affected by the never ending background music playing over the characters thinking, wondering, staring, the latest ep is populated with that that I had to fast forward. And it is never a good idea to ignore phone calls isn't it? I just feel this series is now downward spiral with the usual conspiracy. It is as if almost everyone conspires against this clueless family. What I do like is our hero isn't an idiot, our heroine doesn't dwell too long on certain things and the one who gets them is the errant daughter in law? She basically got their relationship right. But I just feel if not for some good acting, this series' story is pretty usual standard fare. The best episodes are the first 2 or 3, and after that it seems to be languishing. The actress is strange. One second emotionally affected, right next cold. She seems rather not concerned she's dying in 3 months and surely 1 month has passed? I get her non concerned approach to her funeral, she is actually scared but her brother's death scarred her emotionally but I feel the issue is acting which is mostly stony face.
