Continued Criticism of Ju Jing Yi’s Spackled on White Makeup and Bad Acting Actually Helping to Keep Buzz High for Period C-drama In Blossom

This is totally the case of bad publicity being better than no publicity at all. The underdog period C-drama In Blossom has been the unexpected success of the March 2024 releases, everyone expected bigger star and bigger budget The Legend of Shen Li to do well which it is but In Blossom is just below Shen Li in terms of viewership and ratings so good for them. Even with cameo female lead Zheng Hehuizi who got all the buzz and love now gone since episode 3, the interesting story and Liu Xue Yi doing a bang up job as the male lead continues to keep the buzz and viewership strong. But the criticism against flower vase female lead Ju Jing Yi has not stopped and continues unabated, her ridiculously white and K-pop idol makeup style just looks so out of place in a C-drama coupled with her still bad acting the viewers are basically hate watching her role but still enjoying the drama overall lol. Reportedly she intentionally does this makeup in all her roles because she loves it, the whiter the better and she brings her own makeup artist on set to add additional touches afterwards so whatever we see onscreen is all her decision and not the production team. Sigh.

    • And that's what JJY did, no publicity. Funny how the people giving her publicity are all ZLY huge fans. Koalasplayground is ZLY's huge fan, and AvenueX is ZLY's huge fan, all constantly giving JJY so much publicity but nothing on their fave, ZLY. Acting as if Shen Li's makeup is any better, heard that she didn't even have make up but AI her face into her stand-in. All her stand-in had to do was sitting on that rocking chair, I don't get what's so hard about it, ZLY can't even at least do that scene and AI her younger self into her older body?

      • She said she doesn't care ab criticism so why are so offended lol, she still will do the same makeup by her own stylist in every drama and toss her bad acting at us in every drama and still get the FL roles, don't worry

      • @Polly, I actually think ZLY's makeup is way worse than JJY's makeup. ZLY and her ML in Shen Li look like parents of the supposed OTP in the drama not the OTP themselves. LOL.

      • This is a silly whataboutism. Why can't they be both bad? JJY's makeup is bad in some scenes and ZLY's make up is also bad. The makeup in Shen Li is too heavy and ages the lead actors even more.

    • I find JJY’s makeup ok. I don’t find having a whitish face as long as her features stand out. And I won’t drop the drama as the overall plot is good. Her acting is ok ok although it’s not award winning material. JJY has the likable factor and has chemistry with her co stars. Despite criticism on ger make up and acting, I think she is still watchable….

Zheng hehuizi may get good points for playing the real JJY as cameo (but given so many scenes) and especially as an underdog. But do I want to watch her as the main lead for the rest of the 40 episodes? Not really….yet…

      • I felt the chemistry with her and Zhang Zhehan. I did not see or feel she had much chemistry with Chen Zheyuan or Liu Xueyi. She has a likable factor if you only watch her once in a blue moon. I checked out Sword and Fairy and then In Blossoms right after, and she was basically the same person. I could not get Han Lingsha out of my head when she took over female lead in In Blossom. Zheng He Huizi had better chemistry with the rest of the cast, not just Liu Xueyi, but even the second leads. I would've totally watched her as the main lead for the rest of the 30 something episodes. But obviously if you're a Ju Jingyi fan or prefer strong visuals, Ju Jingyi is definitely going to win out on Zheng He Huizi.

    • By the way…. The part where JJY was especially “white” is when she was playing the evil merchant lady wearing the red dress. Probably to reflect the cold and cruel character. Her make up tones down to a warmer shade once she plays the good girl.

There’s also the part where she looks white when they were at the underground casino (4th row 2 pics and 5th row right pic above). Her hair was styled with two front ponytails. Thats when she was impersonating a rich and arrogant lady during an investigation assignment with Liu Xue Yi…

So I think the make up was made especially paler than usual to distinguish the different roles she was playing in the drama. And the lighting was especially bright, amplying the whitish makeup.

  • JJY's face is changing by the drama she stars in. I loved her in YunXi and she was good but after that everything went downhill. She insist on staying perfectly pretty in every roles in every situation. I stopped watching her after Ruyi Pavilion.

    • Agree. She is aiming for ethereal beauty all the time. She has standards. However, she needs to put that aside and start choosing roles where her makeup and isn't doing the acting for her.

  • How does her makeup looks Kpop-ish? I see more Japanese style from her neck up. Also she isn't the only C actors overly white-powdering their faces. ZLY and LGX in Shen Li also did the same. Other examples like Esther Yu, Dylan Wang, Bai Lu, Yang Zi, Gong Jun, and Zhang Linghe etc., to just name a few. It appears to be a trend that C-ent makeup artists prefer to style their celebs this way. And C celebs seem to worship whitening skins themselves too. Their heavily powdered and whitened faces look even worse and more ghostly pale with unnatural lighting in C dramas. Makeups and poor lighting all make C actors look far subpar. One comment somewhere else diminished the visuals of C actors compared with K actors. I disagree. I actually appreciate average C actors' looks more because the Chinese have a greater variety of facial features than Koreans and C actors' faces look more delicate in general. But poor drama production qualities and bad artistic/aesthetic taste including aforementioned factors like styling and lighting did a great disservice to these supposedly beautiful C actors. C actors' heavy makeup makes them look more like Italian opera singers. LOL.

  • How many posts has there been on JJY being a bad actress now? I feel like we're starting to beat a dead horse with a stick.

I think she looks quite nice in that bottom left pic, but the rest she's a bit too white/pale. She's one of the ones where she seems to have a good plastic surgeon and gotten prettier as the years went by with the work she's done.

I'm one of the ones who dropped the drama after the actress change, and I went back to watch the last episode to see what all the mystery fuss was about. JJY was actually not bad when she played the role more somber. When she initially took over, she played the role more like one of those modern day people who got sucked into the book or video game. Someone who had their whole family murdered, ridiculed since the age of 10 for the giant scar on their face and working with corpses, shouldn't be that happy go lucky. I feel like she could be a decent actress if she dropped the idol baggage. Unfortunately, for all her fans, just seeing her breathe on screen is enough for them so there's no need to improve.

    • I dont even watch her dramas anymore, that is the best solution. Nothing to complain about as I have even know if her skills have improved or now.

    • Sort of agree that it's beating a dead horse with a stick since she's not going to change no matter the criticism. It's been years and she's still making money.

The stubborn vanity and entitlement behind the makeup and the message that her vanity is more important than anything else, which rubs the wrong way. And it sort of disrespects the efforts other actors put into acting. I think she does have a sort of on-screen charm and energy. I also feel like she could be a decent actress too if she sheds the vanity. It's just an annoying shame that she could be more but won't.

The makeup is really too thick in many of these costume dramas. Even the best actors are getting pancaked up and getting skin-smoothed on camera. At least some of them vary their makeup so it can look bad in different ways across different dramas, so you can pick out which role the look is from. My personal take on JJY's makeup is that I think it often makes her look like she's trying to get over a cold, so I do find it distracting.

  • In Blossom is the first drama of hers where I'm genuinely disappointed Ju Jingyi got the female lead role.

Her obsession with looking like a computer-generated perfect doll from every angle in every scene makes her come across as extremely unprofessional as an actress and I personally don't see any appeal in the unnaturally white-faced, red-eyed, red-lipped look she is into. She would be perfect as a beauty influencer. As an actress not so much.

When she stands next to other actors, the difference between them is ridiculous. They look like normal people, even when their skin has also been airbrushed, while Ju Jingyi looks like someone with a permanent face filter on.

But I get her fans love that look and having a big fanbase is a huge advantage in China's acting industry. I can only hope she doesn't land any more main roles in dramas I'm actually interested in due to the cast, storyline etc. because I'll have to sadly cross them off the list of shows I want to watch.

  • Wait...are people saying that there's facial and body makeup that people put on to look whiter? I mean, somehow this makes sense in Asia because I've seen some maskey white faces. But to put on this makeup even just living your life? How does one maintain that?

I legit thought JJY just stayed indoors and never opened her windows to get that unnatural, pasty white look that some already light skinned people can achieve by many years of avoiding the sun.

  • I'm barely done with ep 1 of In Blossom. So far, it's pretty interesting ZZH and LXY are doing a bang up job, but I haven't gotten to JJY yet 😂 so no comment on her acting. Only one reason why I always avoid JJY's dramas is because she always wants to stay pretty, but IMO I hate that kind of makeup on my FL, it's too white and distracting. I find it unnatural. We'll see how I feel about her when she pops up on screen but I'm already not liking her look from the ending mv credits. Plus, I get why people say ZZH although has a scar is still pretty in comparison to JJY's cake up makeup because I see it! Even without the pretty makeup look, ZZH still looks pretty with that hideous scar on her face.

  • I had a random thought. I think JJY should go on one of those acting shows like Memories Beyond Horizon. I want to hear genuine critique on her acting. Maybe she can learn a few things from it.

    • Funny you mentioned that because Zheng Hehuizi is on this second season of Memories Beyond Horizon.

  • She doesn’t get good makeup and It's not same makeup every drama. She need to put more effort for good makeup. Other actresses do facial and many more beauty secrets to get good makeup. She is lazy. Her acting need to be more serious. Even actresses are comparing with her because of her laziness. Her anti-fans are continuing non-stop illogical criticism.
