2024 Baeksang Art Award Nominations are Out and TV Category Has Surprises and Snubs

So the biggest surprise for me in the just released 2024 Baeksang Art Awards nominations the TV category are on who was and was not nominated in the Queen of Tears family. Kim Soo Hyun got yet another Baeksang Best Actor nomination for this role but the rest of the drama was missing in the Best Drama, Best Screenwriter, and Best Actress for Kim Ji Won. I understand why its fraught to nominate it in the Best Drama and Best Screenwriter categories since the drama isn’t done yet and can fall apart, and Kim Ji Won is giving the best performance of her life but I don’t think compared to the other nominees she was better enough to consider this a snub, but then I wished QoT was not nominated at all and is considered for next year’s awards instead IMO. But I can see the awarding body absolutely wanting to laud Kim Soo Hyun and also use him for buzz hence it’s kinda like a rock and a hard place decision. I don’t know if he’ll win since he’s won before but his strongest competition would be zaddy Ryu Seung Ryong in Moving and Namgoong Min in My Dearest, though Im Shi Wan in Boyhood could be the dark horse. K-netizens are also calling Kim Tae Ri not getting a Best Actress nom for Revenant a snub and I think the 5th nomination for Best Actress got taken by Lim Ji Yeon in a surprise nod is why. Also it’s as double great year for Ra Mi Ran and Honey Lee both of whom got Best Actress nominations in both the TV and Movie sides.

  • Lim Ji Yeon was absolutely spectacular in Lies Hidden in My Garden....it had all the buzz when it aired in Korea, her eating scene went viral but yes, it made 0 waves internationally but she is by no means a surprise...Kim Taeri is a snub because I believe she deserved Honey Lee's spot but Honey Lee is national favorite so she is guaranteed a spot....also absolutely nobody is surprised by Im Shiwan getting his deserved nod for Boyhood.

  • I'm also surprised Kim Ji Won wasn't nominated for best actress. Maybe the timing of the drama had a heavy influence on the decision? Bummer because this really seems like the role that's going to push her even further in her already great career!

    • same here, I'm seeing comments from k-netizens expressing surprise at Kim Jiwon's exclusion, saying that if performance was the criteria she should have been winning a long time ago. I can see their point tbh.

  • The Baeksangs have a very clear eligibility criteria which I don’t think most people know and/or understand. In the drama category, a drama airing between April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024 and has aired at least 4 episodes OR 1/3 of its run (whatever is shortest) are eligible. Queen of Tears is eligible this year meaning they are not eligible next year. So if KSH didn’t get nominated now, he couldn’t have been next year unless they manipulate the eligibility criteria which is so not the Baeksang style. Secondly, there are numerous actors who have been nominated mid airing. Song Joong Ki for Vincenzo comes to mind as the most recent. There is no issue with that either.

It sucks that QOT didn’t get nominated for at least best PD and Screenwriter. That’s a miss imo, but everyone will have their opinion on what’s a miss and what isn’t. In the end, the experts know why they’re doing I suppose. All I can say is, KSH deserved that nomination without an atom shred of doubt. I don’t think it matters that he’s won a Baeksang before - OJS won Best Supporting actor twice in a row! Whether KSH wins will high depend on how Hyunwoo as a character grows in the drama. There are 6 episodes left and lots of time for him to show us just how good he can be.

As for KJW - while she is undoubtedly great, the actress category this year is extremely competitive and HHJ, PBY, and KTR are all excluded. Yet none of the ones included can be pulled out. That’s how good the list is, and personally, I would easily pick KTR and PBY for their roles over KJW if there was a 6th spot. But in the end, that’s just an opinion and I’m sure everyone has their own. The reality is, Baeksang has always been a very competitive event and, for the most part, they’ve always gotten it right. Excited to see who comes out on top!

    • I dont think the screenwriter deserve nomination. The writing of QoT is quite bad, the plot is paper thin and makes no sense.

      • Disagree whole heartedly. And looking at the ratings most viewers also disagree with that assessment. But that is okay, we all do not need to like the same things as long as we are respectful and not bashing anyone.

      • The rating is high doesnt mean the writing is good. Like Dots and the penthouse are badly written dramas with super high rating. Fir QoT, some parts of it was good/great and the actors/directors are great but the writing as a whole is not good at all. Just my opinion of course.

      • I found international fans might not like QoT but the plot was catered more to SK domestic audience. I read some negative IMDB reviews about QoT. They somehow voiced my opinion that I had trouble spelling out. I personally think QoT is perhaps the weakest plot writer PJE has written. If viewers get bored of the series, the problem lies mostly on the script and the directing is next to blame. Here are just some negative reviews online:

        1. The writing overall is just sub average. Serial is cramped with so many side characters that after some time i was looking at skipping there scenes.

        2. After a promising, funny and witty, first episode, the things changed. I am disappointed so far. It stretches too thin to be a good quality work in all directions. The plot develops as slow as a snail and full of cliches. There are lots of Kim Soo-Hyun's face close-up shots, - which is understandable since he is very beautiful- however, many of these camera freezes on his face have no substance whatsoever, - is he a model here or an actor?

        3. I finished watching ep 10 and let me tell you, it is absolutely NOT worth the hype. I have to skip the majority of scenes cause the side stories & characters are just that boring.

        4. The high rating makes sense because of Kim Soo Hyun's long-awaited appearance, but I find his character controversial and his acting awkward and stiff at some points. Kim Ji Won dominates the couple with her acting performance and as a more full-blooded character. The major disappointment is in the supporting characters - too many villains who stand flat. To say nothing of the grandfather, son and grandson who are so gullible and stupid that one wonders how they gained and sustained their wealth. They are utterly unconvincing.

        5. The storyline is pretty basic and sometimes even foolish. The actors are good but subplots are too much and boring to say the least. Too many villian and many cliche scenes. Wasted my 6 hours to find out what the hype is all about this drama turning into a big waste of time. I think go back couple handled this genre pretty well considering how they're handling this. Both leads are pretty generic characters too.

        6. The basic assumption of this drama, she is going to die within 3 months, is already a matter of taste, but the reaction of the the male lead is absolutely strange. He is full of joy that this way a divorce becomes superfluous. This is the ultimate violation of what marriages are all about. How can someone possibly recover from here? The discussions with his lawyer friend are weird. They kind of follow the same line of evil reasoning and they happen in public places. For me it is just a question when somebody who is not supposed to hear this will learn about his thoughts this way. Then there is a scene where the makers try to produce tension using a message sent to her cell phone from his relatives about divorce. He has to prevent her from reading it. We felt that we saw this kind of problem already quite often in other dramas or movies. It is just annoying. We used fast-forward to avoid seeing this mess. Btw. His relatives appear stupid when sending this delicate message to her. Their behavior is not understandable. This seems to be a general problem of this drama, that the behavior of the persons involved appears to be unreasonable. This is why we did not feel any emotional relationship with the characters.

      • I'm not even sure what you mean by the 'writing of QoT is quite bad' - if anything, it's well-paced, well-structured (no dragging), uses its tropes well and the characters are written in a way that's consistent but also makes them multidimensional and engaging (to take just one example in a supporting role - Kwak Dongyeon acts his heart out as Soo-cheol but he wouldn't have anything TO act out if Soo-cheol was just written as an idiot chaebol son who's due for a humbling and not also a man who genuinely loves his wife and child and goes along with a whole scam because his underlying motivation is that he wants her to be treated better by his family).

You may not like the drama for whatever other reason - don't like the subject, don't like the actors, don't like kdrama tropes, whatever - but a kdrama doesn't have to be some gritty Signal-type story to be considered well-written. Plenty of hit shows are badly written as you pointed out - those are the ones that feel draggy to watch (one of my earliest faves, Princess Hours, definitely has this problem). The actors and PD elevate an already good script, they're not creating something out of nothing here.

      • I agree, it started off really well but now, I'm skipping past so many scenes. Also it irks me how the ML was happy over his wife's death.

    • Royal we: I dont think the writing is good because lots of things make no sense. Like being a couple with so much history and so much love in the past, how on earth can someone feel happy knowing his wife gonna die of terminal illness? No matter how things sours btw them, only monster wishes once the love of your life to die. And the past connection is so cringe worthy. Or how can a chaebol family be so utterly stupid? Except for the main couple and a few others, most characters feel are just caricatures.
Oh dont say because it’s a dark comedy because unlike dramas like vincenzo which is funny (and didnt take itself seriously), I dont find this drama funny at all.
I’m not dissing the actors, i think they’ve all done excellent job. But this is the first time I watch a PJE drama and i must say i’m not a fan. I’d avoid her dramas in the future unless my fav is in them

      • @Abc, I agree with you about the buildup of the characters and relationships. Those are the weakest part of the drama. Yes, the writer (or the director) seemed to inject elements of black comedy into their story telling. But that part of the storylines fails to make me empathetic. I don't get the sense of humor for most part of those paradoxical narratives. All you pointed out are exactly some of the flaws that why I don't get to appreciate nor enjoy PJE's drama this time. I consider the biggest failure of this writing is the combo of black comedy with melo. Other than trying too hard to magnify the effects of dark jokes through exaggerating acting, it's lacking logic and I don't get the emotional connection with the characters and their stories. Some IMDB reviewers also pointed this out.

  • Not too fussed with Jiwon's snub surprised though there's so many articles on it. Qot team really fumbled it with the airing date, if it was next yr theyd sweep awards. It skb seems there's been alot of snubs, hyojoo and Boyoung is surprising too. One thing, I don't get is why jcw got ignored, hes been consistently amazing in his last few projects, then outdid himself in worst of evil, him over Kim soohyun would make sense. Not seeing a baeksang worthy performance out of Kim soohyun in qot. Maybe jcw should start working with pje/kes...

    • Maybe JCW should work with PJE/KES? Do they want to work with him though? He takes on back to back mid projects but none manage to create any buzz and receive low ratings except for the one with Shin Hye Sun due to her star power. He's done more projects in 2 years than most do in their entire career yet not a single Baeksang nomination, hmmm.

      • He shouldve got recognition for his acting 'if you wish upon me' it's a healing type of show, gives me moves to heaven vibes (which was snubbed at baeksang too).
Speaking of buzz, woe defo had it, good reviews too.
Place him in any cliche pje/kes drama and he'd kill it.

      • @Guest: LOL the burn. What JCW needs is a better eye for scripts and to stop taking every and all roles that come knocking on his door. Kailey hilariously trying to bring down KSH (of all people ffs) for JCW. The irony is real 🤪 The former did only 7 dramas getting 5 nominations at Baeksang which someone pointed out below. Meanwhile, JCW is working literally 24x7 and no one remembers half the drama he does. Baeksang is a talk ask.

      • What makes you think PJE/KES want to cast him? Given his poor record, no investor is going to shell out money for a big budget, high profile drama. The star writers only want the cream of the crop actors and he’s definitely not one of them.

      • Right on @Guest. Why in god’s green earth would writers who have the option of casting the Kim Soo-hyun, Hyun Bin, Song Joong-ki, and Gong Yoo of the world go around and decide, nah, why go for those guys when we can get Ji Chang-wook! 😂

      • I'm just saying maybe he'd be less overlooked. it's not like I'm fond of pej/kes, I'm powering through qot only cause of Jiwon.

      • Oh poor you, must be hard to be powering through drama of writer you are not fond of but desperately want your fave to be casted in said writer’s drama. Maybe you and JCW should reflect on why he’s overlooked instead. His poor track record is too consistent to be a fluke.

      • @Guest - echoing A, lol the burn indeed.

The first mistake people make is thinking all these Hallyu pretty boy actors (now in their 30s) would be equal once you take away their popularity and star power.

I wouldn't even consider myself a Kim Soohyun fan but he and Song Joongki, in terms of acting ability, are on a different level from their peers. I started watching QOT mainly for Kim Jiwon (and the knets are right, it looks weird that she isn't even nominated) but I'm not daft enough to be blind to what KSH brings to his role as Baek Hyunwoo. In any other actor's hands it would be a series of canned expressions, in KSH and KJW the characters truly come alive.

      • @Royal Actually just to be clear, most knetz are not actually questioning KJW’s exclusion. Some journalists were. The general consensus based on comments is that no one’s making a controversy out of this other than the journalist themselves. All the ladies who made the final list are lauded so there’s no outlier who should have been removed. Several posts on TheQoo on this, but ofc, there are KJW fans who have raised questions. It happens yearly so that’s not anything new.. The thing about relying on Netizenbuzz or other comment translation sites is that they pick and choose what they want to translate and try to get as much views/ comments as possible. They don’t actually reflect knetz opinions for the most part. Here’s a post with over 170+ comments. If you use google translate, you’ll get a very clear gist that most aren’t questioning anything other than Kim Taeri (understandable but again, there’s no one to exclude)

        https://theqoo .net/hot/3174359492?filter_mode=normal &page=1

I just feel it’s unfair to the ladies who were picked that some journalist decided to put a fuss. No one wants this sort of controversy including KTR and KJW.

    • Oh look, it’s Kailey! The person who was quite quick to hate on KSH when that random photo situation popped up last time. You were wailing about how “my girl KJW” is being “affected”. Now that the rumor has been thrown in the trash, guess “average performance” is all the straws you have left to clutch onto. With a dash of ~ boo-hoo, pity is me, I am powering through a bad PJE drama I don’t even like for KJW, but please, PJE, I beg you, if only you’d cast my oppa in your next drama, he would kill it~

Nah, this is peak comedy 🤣

      • What is this nonsense, you're remembering what I said now how bizarre. Have always thought he's average , and course that's subjective and weird rumours have always floated around hun . Lol , proper clownery to not think a basic cliche role that revolves around mostly crying can't be nailed.

      • Nonsense indeed... just close your eyes and imagine… an “average actor” getting a coveted Baeksang nomination for a “cliche role that revolves mostly around crying”. I mean, seriously KSH, what a legend you are!!

It’s been a hoot “hun”, keep it up! 🤣

    • Oh Kailey dear, Kim Soo Hyun doesn't need PJE to be in Baeksang, Park Hye-ryun in Dream High, Jin Soo Wan in Moon Embracing the Sun where he won best actor, even a rookie writer Jo Yong secured him to be nominated for best actor. Other actors doesn't necessarily needs PJE/ KES to enter Baeksang either. The fact that most fans of actors are wishing their bias not working with PJE with the plagiarism scandal. I really pity your narrow minded minset

    • Of all the fan wars I was expecting, a JCW fangirl trying to argue against a KSH nomination was not in my bingo card lol.

I’ll tell you what JCW needs. Better fans who won’t embarrass him. And an ability to tell when a script offer should be burned in the fireplace. Here’s a friendly suggestion, instead of going around antagonizing other actors, I suggest you consider exactly why JCW hasn’t gotten a single Best Actor Baeksang nomination in the past decade, and why he’s unlikely to even be offered a supporting role in the dramas of the writers you mentioned. And then maybe you can consider why the guy you hate has it all. There’s a very obvious difference (and no, I’m not talking about talent tho there is that as well).

      • Embarrassing indeed. Imagine being so delusional to think a drama getting 1% rating on a free channel warrants a nomination. It’s not a single BA nomination in the last decade it’s not a single nomination in his entire career. No wonder delusional fan girl is foaming at the mouth with KSH’s accomplishments.

      • @Butterfly - exactly. A JCW stan calling KSH's - of all people- comic reactions 'rehearsed' and 'unnatural'?

like bro have you even looked at any JCW comedic performance EVER? His filmography barring Lovestruck in the City, is like the Exhibit A of canned expressions - he does them well, but it's the same type of 'funny' whenever he has to do a comedy, the same type of 'romantic' whenever he has to do a romantic scene, and so on, in basically every full-length drama of his career.

      • @Royal We, were you referring to me regarding "rehearsed" and "unnatural" comment? Sorry to your disappoint that I'm not a JCW fan but more a KSH fan cos I got to finish only one JCW's drama, Healer, and I watched most of KSH's hit dramas except One Ordinary Day. LOL. Your speculation about me all fails LOL. Besides, fans in the west not only watch but also critique their faves' works. One doesn't need to be a hater nor rival actors' fan to find obvious flaws of acting, characters, scripts, and directing etc.

I'm not the only one thinking some of KSH's comedic moments in QoT looked rehearsed and unnatural. There're also similar comments in IMDB reviews.

    • I don't see a Baeksang worthy performance from KSH in QoT either. So far, KJW impressed me more. I'm speaking of this as a fan of KSH not KJW though. She somehow managed to have me relate to her emotionally as a viewer. KSH's character, however, was not fleshed out consistently. I don't understand why a competent lawyer had such cowardly side freaking out by his wife and in-law family. Some of his comedic timing appeared rehearsed and unnatural. The intended combo mixing comedic and serious acting from KSH looked so off to me. Was it the director or the actor to blame? KSH is a great actor and therefore he's fully capable of nuanced acting. But his character wasn't well written and there you could see awkward and inconsistent personality from his character.

      • I agree with you, its the writing. Haein is the better written character by miles. She already had an edge starting out - terminal illness, pathetic family, siblings death & her husband hating her already made her more sympathetic to the viewers & that has only strengthened. KSH mentioned that PJE specially requested him to do the show and you can see why. Any other actor in his place & hyunwoo would be the most hated character on the show. But he somehow manages to infuse somewhat of a sympathy. But its not enough. And definitely not baeksang worthy. KJW, even though better than KSH, also doesnt deserve a nomination.

      • I probably could not disagree more if I tried lol. I’ve read many comments about how KJW’s portrayal is too stiff, etc, and I couldn’t disagree with that more either. To me, Hyunwoo is a complex morally grey character who brings the funny in a very delicate situation. I mean, I could absolutely go on and discuss in detail just why KSH is extraordinary in this role, but I won’t.

Because tbh, I don’t think there is a single performance in the world that everyone loved. You will always find someone who can’t resonate with the actor or character or drama. And that’s okay. Personally, I’ve never found SJK compelling in my life but he’s a great actor nonetheless and I would never question his nomination because regardless of what I feel, because his performances are always well received by the general public. In the end, it’s the majority’s opinion that sticks and in this case, the panelists.

      • @butterfly that may very well be true I don't follow knetz much (or rather idk how to lol) so my source is just Twitter mostly & gooddata where kjw topped for 3 weeks. Although the diff between her and ksh is miniscule, I would still assume that this means she is being widely loved the most. There were even articles on her snub

      • @BN

And what you say may very well be true except where exactly do you see me arguing that KJW is unpopular? I said I couldn’t disagree more with those who say she is too stiff. They are both great and doing their jobs well.

As for Good Data, that has been flip flopping between the two actors for weeks with 0.1 differences in some weeks. That is literally not a measure of properly comparing KJW vs KSH. And frankly, I’ve got zero interest in comparison. Some prefer her and some prefer him, and some enjoy both. We can all enjoy who we want and more importantly, the drama as a whole. They are both doing amazing as a team and that is what matters.

  • For actors wouldve loved to see jo jung suk now that man carried the drama hard! Lee doohyun was good too but alas soohyun with his average performance got in instead.

    • Where do u sense the desperation He's a better actor then some of the names u mentioned that's for sure. His performance in woe should be getting award love, lol but instead what's valued is a basic role like qot.

    • I cannot agree that KSH performance was “average”
Nothing was average about his acting in QOT …while the rest of the cast and crew got snubs i thought by letting him in, they avoided the biggest snub of all. Because if there was somehow only ONE nomination that QOT can get, it has to be KSH. Yes the buzz helped but it was scene after scene of great acting that built his character pain, love and growth. Without props without words even sometimes - nothing was average about it

      • Yep 💯

If ever it came down to them having to pick just one singular nomination for Queen of Tears, they made the right call undoubtedly. Kmedia is all over him and KSH has been getting articles after articles of praises every single week since airing started. He does not wear the flashy outfits or have the cool character in the drama until very recently. Hyunwoo is rather pathetic in fact as the actor himself said. But he swaps from genre to genre playing comedy one moment, and turning it to angst the next without a glitch. I don’t remember seeing this much praise for acting in a rom com in a very long time actually. I started this drama for Dongyeon who is ALWAYS remarkable, but in the process fell for KSH. He’s so talented.

But also, KSH and KJW are not in the same categories so there’s no real reason to even connect the two nominations… being in the same drama has nothing to do with it… it is crappy luck for some this year. Hope she can do another project soon, and not only make it to the list, but actually win it at that time. She’s remarkable herself.

  • Lol, Baeksangs are always the time when the trolls come out and play. Crappy luck for KTR but most knetz agree with the list of nominees. There are no controversies here minus the media trying to create a fuss. Happens yearly too. Anyway, I think Moving will win quite a lot of awards. Excited to see if KSH can continue one upping himself in the next few episodes and secure a win. On the film side, Exhauma will likely do a sweep of the major categories. Too bad LDH is missing out on the aftermath of his first movies success.

      • Sorry but I don’t agree on the second part. I love LDH but there is most definitely no actor in that list I would remove to give him a spot. Never once saw his name being called as potential nominee in the speculation posts in daum, instiz, qoo. LJH for taxi, JJS for King were very popular alternates. I also read a few here and there mentioning OJS for Ghost and JCW for Evil. But Good Mother was only spoke about in connection with RMR. I’m a big fan of LDH, but I also know he is not at the level of the actors who made the list.

  • I read somewhere today: this will be KSH’s fifth Baeksang nomination and he only has been lead in seven dramas his whole career. So that is a 70% ratio of getting nominated and as Koala said, he already won it too. Dayum. That’s mighty impressive.
Super upset about KTR! It must have been tough call. Wish they will release the 60 survey results. They did this before. Curious on how close she was to the final list.

    • I looked up KSH filmography because no way he has only 7 dramas?? I am so shocked. The success ratio, nom : work ratio is insane.

      • I am a ksh fan but I don't think his character or performance warrants a nomination. He is doing great but not worthy of a nomination IMO. The show is female centric with the more complex character being portrayed by KJW & while I do think that any other actor in place of ksh would have made hyunwoo the most hated character, I still don't think it warrants a nom ...unless something changes drastically in last 6 episodes

  • Well Baeksang has the most cred compared to other awards. Sucks for quite a few actress that didnt get noms. But it is what it is. Ra Mi Ran was really good in Good Bad Mother..had me bawling.
Given the diff and groundbreaking genre in Moving, I expect it to get a lot of nominations.

  • They will never be able to satisfy everybody. This is the most prestigious awards for dramas in SK, and they don’t care if a movie/drama/actor is popular or high rated or sold most tickets. It’s all about the performances and why everyone trusts them. Too bad for those who did not get included. Better luck next time. Rooting for 12/12! JWS and HJW were both incredible. One of them has to get it surely!

  • Although I think what all actors/actresses deserved this nomination, I have some thoughts why one or others wasn't nominated. Lee Do Hyun is in army right now and can't attend to awards. Kim Tae Ri won Best actress in 2022. Park Eun Bin won Grand prize last year. Moving was nominated almost in all categories, so they didn't added to this HHJ. JCW, although I think he was good in Worst of evil and Samdari, I also think his acting was the best part of both dramas. Their plots were a little weak. So by choosing between good actors in strong or mid drama, they chose the first. But Worst of evil got nomination Best director, and I'm agree, he deserved.
What about Queen of tears, I also can't understand why drama didn't get more nominations. KJW's character totally opposite of her character in MLN and she's still great, all supporting actors is good as well, and directors made amazing scenes. QOT is the most successful cable drama of 2023 and 2024, so being so ignored seems a little strange to me. At least I'm glad KSH got nomination, but I think Namgung Min will win.
Well, we all have our faves and different opinions about nominations. I hope people will stop bring down one actor to prise another. All of them deserved their place by hard work. Hate won't help any of them.

    • 1. Hyun Bin was also in the military when he was nominated for Best Actor and received a Daesang in 2011, so it's not impossible for an enlisted actor to be nominated.
      2. Park Eun Bin got a Best Actress nomination in 2022 and 2023, as well as Oh Jung Se won Best Supporting Actor in 2021 and 2022, so it's also not impossible for an actor or actress to have back-to-back nominations.
      3. Winning a Daesang from the previous year doesn't mean being ruled out for another nomination the following year, but the 5 Best Actress nominees this 2024 undoubtedly gave meritorious performances and it's hard to remove one name from the list.
      4. I also noticed the pattern so I somewhat agree. Usually, when a project gets multiple nominations, only one lead (who's ultimately the heart of the show) is selected to represent in the Best Actor or Actress category. Of course with some exceptions such as last year's Decision To Leave where both Park Hae Il and Tang Wei respectively nominated for Best Actor and Actress.
