You think too much...she herself had said in her interview how grateful she felt when Hu Ge suggested her for the role...They are long time friends and he knew her well. He knew she would suit the role. Even thru she felt very pressured as she was worried she could not do well, he supported her with confidence.
And what is wrong with helping and support friends/collegues in this industry. You must be naive to think even Top artistes do not get help thru connections. Trolling? You are just a negative person.

It's embarrassing that one of the most notorious terrible actors of cent is going to Cannes, a film festival, invited by a brand and strutting around as if he isn't a complete flop even in cent land, while surrounded by actual starts who are there to promote their work.

It is funny seeing the Asian celebrities here walking the red carpet as mannequins for this brand or that brand and their domestic media acting like it's an achievement when they aren't attending on any merit with regard to actual film talent or even because they love cinema.
It's one thing if celebrities are attending to promote or sell a project, attend a discussion panel or something but a lot of them fly in just to model for a brand for five minutes on a red carpet for films they have no interest in and mostly won't even understand. Most don't even mention the films or even stick around to watch the film! I bet if you asked most of them they wouldn't even know the name of the film they are on the red carpet for. It's like a mockery of cinema at the biggest film festival.

Why so much hate and they are all from Asian people too? There’s actually Asian photographers and media as well. The attention should be for those with film debut there and for big int’l stars. But these stars from smaller countries or lesser int’l stars are invited because the Cannes festival are trying to stay relevant too. Even cinema in the US are not doing as well, any publicity is warranted. It’s great for the film industry. They are in the same industry. Their fans and local media will pick up on it ( like what koalas is doing here). Stop being so negative.
I don’t understand the has either. They were invited and so they went! I’d go too if they were going to dress me up to strut on the red carpet 😂. I’d post it on my FB page and play Big Fish in my little pond! It’s called having fun and enjoying the perks of being wanted and acknowledged.

LOL. There's no hate. Fans just can't accept the reality ppl pointed out that C movies are still not up on the level to be on international stage unlike some Korean films that are recognized by international filming industry. Even Chinese actors were invited to the event, C movies have no significant markets outside China, unlike C dramas. That's a fact with all the box offices as a proof. Since this post is about a Chinese celeb. It's legit to note that apparently her first pic was blurred for plausible reason to avert awkwardness that she wasn't anywhere close to be a spotlight in such an international event.
I think the wording like "hate" and "hater" has been abused among Asian drama fan circles. Fans have to learn to face reality rather than live in the rosy bubbles created by your own fantasy of all the glamor from these celebs just cos you enjoy Asian dramas more than Western dramas. Stop throwing shade on those who honestly speak of the facts.

Farewell My Concubine (a Pan d'Or winner), House of the Flying Daggers, Raise the Red Lantern, are all internationally recognized movies that came before Korean wave. I can't name a Korean movie director which has an international household reputation like Zhang Yimou or Chen Kaige, for instance.
As for the box office, I won't dispute you. But like many other comments across other posts on this blog have mentioned, China doesn't have to rely on international audience for their movies to profit. But some Chinese movies made it to international box office, despite limited or even none showing in other countries. Yes, for the sheer number of their domestic shows alone.
@lenje, the heyday of Chinese films was already in the past. Not anymore with tightened censorship. To the contrary, the quality of Chinese movies has been steadily degrading for the past decade. Don't reside on the history! The Chinese seem to have a fetish to magnify the past glory. We are living in the current and Cannes is always about the current films. How are those old films you mentioned relevant to what are produced today? It's funny to mix them up without recognizing the lack of quality and artistry in Chinese films today, which is always what Cannes has been looking for in any production.
TBH, ZYM and CKG are the history already. They have no capacity nor freedom nowadays to recreate any memorable works as before. They are now irrelevant to the current league of prestigious film makers.

But I’m not a fan the way you’re accusing those who are puzzled at the hate. I’m a drama fan first and celebrities only interest me if there is pretty fashion or gossip. I enjoy watching the bits of news of them overseas and certainly don’t care that general photographers don’t know them or care. I’m not into laughing or mocking these celebrities for that. I can understand the hard work it took them to get a brand behind them and that being asked by their sponsors to be at Cannes is certainly not an insult. It is a good thing. They weren’t asked to show up at a mall or some small avenue. This is Cannes and ANY photo op at Cannes is a good thing. Opportunities for foreign actors are hard to come by—be it a photo op in Cannes, an NBA celebrity All Stars game, or a torch bearing run for the Olympics. I say, take it and enjoy!
What I disdain for isn't C celebs' low exposure or low popularity to the West and international stage. But the fetish Chinese media and culture have to manipulate and spread fake information. Blurring the background of that photo is one example of such a blatant act to mislead fans to be gullible about the influence and glory of their idols overseas that they tend to gloat over Chinese SM. It's a cheat!

The only Chinese presence in Cannes worth a mention is Jia Zhang-Ke's film,, Caught by the Tide, which is selected for In Competition category. Everything else is reduced to nothing in substance.

I don't get the negativity either. It feels like envy at some point. Cannes is a big festival, and while the really important stuff is happening in the theater, a lot of stuff happens outside too, what with all the stars parading. Some are there to promote their work, some are there to boost their career, some to promote their sponsor, including fashion houses, and some maybe there for the fun of it, or because they are fangirling over bigger names that also attend. So what. Unless there are Asian actors who try to sell this at home as an artistic achievement to be at Cannes, I don't see why we jave to hate them for being there as so many small to medium sized stars do.
