Kim Yoo Jung Offered Female Lead Role in K-drama Dear X Adapted From Webtoon by PD of Goblin

I’m glad to see Kim Yoo Jung heading into another new project, I was so mid on My Demon despite trying so hard to love it, ultimately the narrative lackings overcame my love for her as the lead. She’s in talks for a new K-drama called Dear X adapted from a webtoon by the PD of Goblin. It’s about an actress with antisocial personality disorder who uses people to get to the top and then stumbles, and her love story with the man who stays by her side. I sure hope there are redeeming qualities to her lol because right now I’m having a tough time finding the female lead someone to root for. But a tough or unlikeable role is always a great challenge and its with the nuances that make for memorable performances so I hope she takes this and gets a great male lead.

  • Kim Yoo Jung is a truly beautiful actress, I too did not enjoy My Demon but I hope the new drama will be interesting to watch. I can show us other sides to Kim Yoo Jung's acting.

    • I agree with everything you said. She seems to lack the ability to choose good scripts in good productions. Maybe she's drawn to the quirky, she's played a cat and a nugget before. But somehow those productions don't turn out well.

Here's hoping that her luck changes and she can actually star in something worth her talents that turns out well.

  • the description of the role is giving me deja vu to her My Demon role - which she didnt pull off too well

  • Apparently kim young Dae is the male lead who is being offered the role. Sigh..he's terrible onscreen and can't act. I don't know how he's getting all these lead role offers

    • streets saying his company got good connections cuz i can’t even fathom how this guy with zero star factor and on screen chemistry can actually bag romcoms

    • Oh I actually love him, thought he was great in Shooting Stars and Moon in the Day, that’s me excited. They might make a wonderful pair if the writing’s there.

    • Any drama with him is an auto skip for me. Has zero screen presence or acting skills. Same with Song Kang.

    • Him? Sooo many talented young actors and they cast this guy. He is so wooden and bland. HOW does he keep getting cast in lead roles? This doesn't give me much hope for the project if this is the calibre of the male lead.

    • No..i hope it's byung wo seok again for KJY. It's too heartbreaking they didn't get to finish their love story in 20 century girl. They're good together

    • No..i hope it's byung wo seok again for KJY. It's too heartbreaking they didn't get to finish their love story in 20 century girl. They're good together

    • I watched only Moon in the day with him, and Kim Young Dae was good for me there, very good portrayed two different characters.

    • Young dae is talented dear,i might not a fan,but in kdrama cheat on me if you can he will melt your heart
Too bad that he is just 2nd lead there :)

  • I wish she chose better projects to challenge herself, something like "My ahjussi" did to IU's career. It pains me to see her in very mid and formulaic kdramas (I know it doesn't pain /her/ since she does get money and CFs anyway, I'm just talking as a random viewer POV).

  • I actually love Kim Yoojung, but I don't understand how she selects scripts. I haven't enjoyed a single one of her dramas since Love in the Moonlight.

  • I have a soft spot for KYJ in my heart. She had been my favorite child actor for years. As of yesterday when I re watched Moon Embracing the Sun, I still stood by my fondness of her as a child actor. She's so gorgeous and totally charming in METS. I still can't think of any other child actress that could replace her in that mesmerizing performance. She and Kim Soo Hyun were the two major factors making METS so memorable and the key reason for my love of METS.

It's a bit disheartening to see her recent dramas not in good review by many fans. I'm not familiar with this ML cos of my hiatus from dramaland for a while. Is he that not-so-impressive or -interesting? Too bad! KYJ got one awkward costar already in My Demon. If she continues to pair with someone who can't act, that definitely will impact how viewers see her own performance too.

  • Well, Kim Ji Won make unlikeable character likeable or for me lovable. Hong Hae In is easy to hate character but you came to love her when you understand her POV. KJY is a good actress but she need to do extensive research and study about the character to help her.

  • It will be good to see her play a darker character and working with a top drama PD. Sadly, I'm not very hopeful for this drama especially after seeing the choice of male lead and as other commentators have mentioned her drama picks as an adult have not been good.

  • I do not think KJY is getting good offers… for reasons only she & her agent will know!! My Demon was not in her favor… definitely not gaining her more publicity even in Netflix. Examining all of Song Kang’s co-stars… she is forgotten…

    • I totally agree. She's a good actress so this is not me bashing her. If anything, I'm just frustrated with the drama choices she and her management have been making. All her male leads after Moonlight have been absolute downgrades too, there's Song Kang who is trendy but can't act, Yun Kyun Sang who doesn't have that It factor and will probably never attain stardom, and Ji Chang Wook who can definitely act but was already past his heyday when he got paired with her (I would've said good on her if he was still in the same status he was during his Empress Ki/Healer era, but no.). And now this. Like, sorry but he's one of the most meh actors working today, must have some big backer lol. I don't understand what her management is doing. Usually, the quality of the male leads an actress gets increases the more years she's in the industry, but the opposite is happening to KYJ, which is... 🤦🏻‍♀️

      • I kind of see what you mean but with Yoon Kyunsang it wasn't really a choice, the drama was postponed because KYJ had a health crisis and he was a last minute replacement after the original male lead dropped out.

I think the bigger problem is that the quality of male leads in her age group (20s) is generally poor compared to what it was ten years ago. Other than Lee Do Hyun who's now 29, I can't think of a single one who's reliably good AND has the ability to carry his half of a drama.

      • @Royal We
There are A LOT good actors in their 20s in Korea. The same for actresses, Korea has a lot of good young actors/actresses right now. Whenever I watch dramas with 20s cast, like Twinkling watermelon or Hierarchy (drama is a mess, but most of actors good), I positively surprised by good acting skills, even actors with small support roles play well enough for me to remember them. Lee Do Hyun just the one with successful dramas and movie for last year, so after that people acknowledged him. Before 2023, I doubt that many people knew about him and probably thought the same, that there are not good actors in their 20s, who can carry his half of a drama.
So it's just depend on if they're famous or not. Most of 20s actors not famous and didn't get offer for big project with veteran female lead, but it doesn't mean that they can't carry main roles.

    • Her fan nearly bit my head off for suggesting this in another post but I think she would benefit from playing a meaty supporting role (and I don't mean a chicken nugget) in a drama with a talented senior something like Park Eun Bin in Stove League or in an ensemble drama like 'Law School'. Take a break from these mediocre romance dramas with mediocre male leads.

      • Good suggestion. She can only ride on her acclaim from being a child actress for so long. After a while the public will grow weary of so many flop dramas like we did with Yoo Seung ho.(Now I don't even bother checking out his dramas anymore). She does need to do a meatier drama with a stellar bankable cast that will elevate her status even further.

Part of the problem are the script she chooses, the other part are the actors she's cast with. None of her past male leads have been a big draw in the acting world, from a combination of inconsistent male leads to has-beens, it really hasn't help elevate her performance in any way. Even an ensemble drama like law school with bankable costars is a step in the right direction.

    • She's not forgotten tho. Kim you Jung do dramas once in a year and that's a fact. Despite of that she has lot of love calls for cfs and brands. That even the drama ended My Demon, she has lot of love calls from many brands, which song Kang co-stars never did. Their drama ends and that's it.
